Umm, there is a numbering scheme. It goes: FC1, FC2, etc...

Correct. And if FC3 for example is stable enough, it *becomes* GM I believe, without any further rebuilding so to speak.

"FC3" does not necessitate GM. I said there is no numbering scheme because the number is irrelevant. There is no magic target number they choose beforehand to make GM. The build that is good is the build that ships.

As I recall, 10.0 was taken to GM at the third FC. 10.1 was taken to GM at the first FC. 10.1 was taken to GM at the first FC.

Is there a reason you seem to think the third build must be the one that just happens to be good enough to ship?

Was using FC3 (some developers DO number Final Candidates that way, trust me) or third FC - whichever you prefer - as an example. The reason I chose that number is because seems like most of the major software titles I've tested have gone at least two FC builds beyond the initial one.

However, not being an ADC Select guy (yet), I have no recollection of how this played out with 10.2 and 10.1. Thanks for filling in the blanks.

Also, with respect to Panther, the comments I've read lead me to believe there will be more than one FC build but that is just an educated guess, nothing more.

    Mr. Chung Huang: Thanks.

IIRC, Cheetah (10.0) only had one FC --that infamous one with the "debug code"-- that ended up going GM. I don't remember Puma or Jaguar's FC history.

Well, b59 certainly isn't the last build because it's buggy as all get out. Expect more updates soon.

Jaguar had quite a few FC builds, I still have that was one build before final and it was FC115

    :-P Food for thought

Yes but wasn't 115 relative to the overall build numbering system (6C115 for example), not relative to the first FC build? Somehow I doubt they did 115 FC builds...

For Puma, for example, it was the third FC build that got named GM. 5G58 was the first Final Candidate, followed shortly by 5G59. Outside of Apple, only 5G62 and 5G64 were seen after, the latter turning GM.

The Final Candidate versions have traditionally been the first builds that didn't allow upgrading from earlier beta versions. Apple would probably not change this behaviour with Panther.

Aren't these the exact same bug you've mentioned for three or so builds now?

A friendly note from a forum administrator

Webscreamer: Please stop posting wish giant rows of dashes. They cripple the forum formatting for anyone without a monstrously large browser window. I don't like having to go back and edit your posts and everyone that quotes you.

Screamer: is there a reason why you duplicate all of your MacNN posts over here? If you have someone over there reporting them for you (seems the case based on what I read), then there is no need to elicit the same response here.

It's good that you find these glitches and bugs, but I don't see the point in posting everything twice. Are you hoping two different people will report the same bugs to Apple, thus making them pay more attention? You noted in your MacNN thread that the large majority of the last batch have been fixed or are being fixed...

...wouldn't it be good enough to post that information alone, here?

here's something i would like to see everyone do for panther, including apple:

USE the contextual menus for dock icons. seems like very few companies use this feature that's been built in. i used to think it was a bit unnecessary, but now when i have ten apps open, and all i want to do is force a "check mail" in entourage, i SHOULD be able to just click and hold on its icons and select "check mail now". if anything shows up, i get the audible alert, icon starts bouncy-bouncy, poop-brown envelope appears, and i can go fetch it.

and microsoft isn't the only violator. ichat doesn't have squat. nor does ical. itunes seems to use it well, though it has been around the block for a while, too.

p.s. (and i am only doing this because i know apple reads these threads), while you're at it, update safari so that when you pull up the contextual menu, you can instantly pull up ANY tabbed page, NOT just the one that was showing the last time the browser was showing.

    Web Screamer,

Here's the quote from your MacNN reporter

    Quote:

Webscreamer: On 9 of the 11 bugs I reported to the ADC from the last build, Apple state's that it's either been fixed or is going through internal testing.

My question: aren't many of those 11 the same ones you've posted here? IOW, they're fixed, but didn't make it into 7B59?

Well, they weren't fixed in 7B59 so I posted them... I will remove them when I get a build that they are fixed.
