TAM a indication of what could be?

Not to piss on anyone's parade, but Steve Jobs is on record as saying that he hated the TAM. So we can be sure that the new iMac will look nothing like the TAM.

What did jobs hate about the TAM? Was it the design, the concept, the exeution? I think he might have hated it because even at that insane price it didn't offer the best performance, and it didn't make Apple any money. To jobs, it seems that an all-in-one ought to be a computer for anybody, which clearly didn't describe the TAM. But I know nothing, so if anyone has any quote by Steve on the TAM, post 'em.

Dude, AI02 did everything I was going to do. He built off my original design and refined it to the point that I was.

    What are you bitchin' about?

You're getting a "revised" mockup...just by someone else.

    Mine wouldn't look any different.

    I don't know pscates...I know everyobdy likes it, but well, I don't.

It looks very bulky. The space under the LCD is kind of wasted, and flat panel speakers cannot really be implemented with good sound for a reasonable price. I'd rather it be off the ground like Spartacus.

I have some sketched mockups all over the place. I'll scan them sometime maybe.

Which one are you talking about, mine or AI02's, on the previous page? Mine is off the ground (see page 1 of this thread) and I did suggest leaving the built-in speakers off, but applenut strongly disagreed.

    Confused.

    Ai02s.

I do like your original, but I think it could be slightly refined. Sharper edges, metallic appearance.

The general form of your original is very nice though.

Maybe I will get a second wind and continue with refining mine a bit. I've got a screaming headache today for some reason and unless it goes away, I don't see myself sitting in front of my iMac, burning the midnight oil and screwing around with this.

By the way, that drawing on SpyMac is not real. It's someone taking a current display and cramming in a "guts" box underneath...hardly a well-thought-out, elegant Apple-esque solution.

Not saying MINE is either, necessarily, but the SpyMac this is pretty bad and I hope nobody out there is actually buying into it. And yes...it DOES have a total MacDraw/ClarisWorks vibe about it.

If I remember correctly, Steve Jobs said he "hated" the TAM because it represented everything that was wrong with Apple at the time. An underpowered machine with the best industrial design, but chocked-full with everything and priced out of reach of sanity. So, Steve doesn't necessarily dislike the TAM per se, but rather everything it stood for.

Yes, I too remember comments made about Steve's dislike of the TAM. Yet, if there's a new iMac, I'd welcome a turn away from the plastics. Though it still looks a great deal like the original TAM, here's my entry for the LCD iMac.

I'd like to see some metallic colors in the iMac like the G4's have. Of course, that would probably not happen since Apple apparently likes to keep this visual distinction between their confumer and professional machines. Still, a guy can dream.

Honestly, I have the greatest faith that the guys at Apple aren't gonna let us down. Although we look at the current iMac and squirm, just remember how we reacted when we first saw the iMac for the first time!! (I'm assuming that it was WOAH!!!!!) These guys are gonna come out with something really classy. I think, still, it's gonna be fairly B&O'ish......nothing wrong with that!!

    Starfleet,

try making the screen just a tad larger, and thin out those side speakers about 50% on each side and I think the proportions would be perfect.

Actually, I tried to use as realistic measurements as possible on that. The screen is 15" and I approximated the size of the speakers by looking at my old Apple Multiple Scan 15AV Display. I suppose, though, the speakers might could stand to be a tad smaller, but I'm fairly sure everything else is proportioned collectly. I may go back and change around some things later.

I've actually already improved a litle bit upon it and made a <a href="http://brad.project-think.com/movies/iMacTwo.mov"; target="_blank">QuickTime movie here (2 MB, Sorenson 3 compressed). Just try to image a moronic Jeff Goldblum voiceover while you're watching it.

It's very nice, but it doesn't look like an iProduct. Isn't cute or consumer-y enough. Looks like a high-end Sony or something-or-other, you know? To big and "serious", if that makes any sense.

Even though the iStuff is losing the colors and the big curvy designs, I still think it holds some appeal with rounded corners, white glossy plastics and so forth. This just doesn't look like something iMac would roll out to appeal to soccer moms and newbies and so forth.

But that's just my 2 cents...not knocking the design and execution itself, just doubting its appropriateness for an iMac.

Great job with the movie. I wish I could do stuff like that because I'd sit around all day doing nothing but fully detailed mockups with animated fly-bys, or construct my own Apple commercials.
