First, "slut" represents such an inclusive definition that it can never be used "correctly." You've heard it used a million times in a million different ways to describe many different situations. "Slutty clothes" can describe any kind of revealing attire. "Slutty girl" can describe any sexually active woman. It's just not exclusive enough to be useful.

Second, it has a clearly negative connotation. That is, for a women to be sexually active is frowned up and discouraged through oppressive labels like "slut." It operates like I described before.

Third, there is no male equivalent of a "slut." "Playboy" or more recently, "Player," have clearly positive connotations that reinforce the double standard. I'm not arguing for the female standard here. No way would I want to be considered a "slut" just for having sex. In this case, I want the male standard to become universal in society- where it is accepted for both sexes and all genders to have sex as freely as they want without fear of oppression.

Paris Hilton shouldn't be derided as a "slut" just because she's had sex- or even videotaped herself having sex. The language sometimes just doesn't operate in a way that I find acceptable, so obviously I'm going to advocate changing it. If there's something you find wrong with that, I'd like to know. I might start a thread on gender-neutral pronouns if you're.....interested.

BTW: if anyone DL'ed the new paris hilton tape lemme know.....

Actually, in recent years "slut" has started to cross the gender line and is now being used to refer to both men and woman. "He is such a slut" is not that uncommon a phrase nowadays.

Thank you again, for the remarkably vapid interpretation of the posting guidelines. Let me reiterate that they are guidelines, and not draconian rules. Let me also iterate that we shouldn't be forbidden to insult people, especially if they exhibit a large degree of definable characteristics. That's the whole point that this thread is handling now.

If SPJ were a slut, I'd call him a slut. It's so much more efficient than saying "a girl who sleeps around." or whatnot. If it hurts someone, that's a damn shame. We live in a world of hurt. People who can't except that will never succeed, regardless of their quest.

And to put something meaningful into this, a truly compassionate man will not avoid damning condemnable activities. Honestly, I'm not truly compassionate, but I do help people when I can. The fact that we're mulling over the use of "slut" is so insanely petty, which is fitting since I've come to expect Shawn to be a master of the petty. Your arguments are often so classically shortsighted that I couldn't just let it slide by this time.

There are better ways to help women. I'm sure Paris has been called a slut so many times that it bounces off of her. Trying to end the use of labels is the most ridiculous thing I've heard from you in a long time. It's right up there with ending "oppressive" grading in schools. Whether you find them offensive or not is purely a matter of culture, and I'm sure you'd argue that we shouldn't make culture oriented decisions.

As for the "I've been in so many flame wars," there aren't really very many standard issue flame wars here. Most are heated arguments with a fair degree of wisdom coming from both sides. Expect heated arguments in AO. That's what it's here for.

Yeah- been meaning to cruise by there to see what's up. I already know about the $50 thing (which I think is ridiculous, but I guess capitalism is capitalism). (Wouldn't that be weird if this clip managed to rake more in than RotK did at the box office? I mean 50 bucks a pop is like 7 matinee tickets, so you get some multiplication there...) I want teh free porn! Nothing goes down better than free porn! I guess we will never see it free if only 1 guy has it and has chosen to release it only in DRM-enabled WMP format. I guess hijacking the video feed while WMP is playing it is out of the question?...(calling any tech-heads out there for an informed opinion) Forget about all that pirated Hollywood movies and licensed music bull$hit! When they start locking porn, we got some pressing matters to address!!!

Nurse? Get me GW on the red line! Pronto!
