the 31st needs to friggin' get here already... but i think my head might explode from prolonged exposure to phil's slightly exaggerated version of the RDF.
And besides, if AIOs don't sell, why is everyone so hot on the Vaio models? Also, Dell's selling a boatload of their compact combo systems. People are buying them... especially businesses.
The problem is that Apple is ONLY selling AIO's, look at their sites Sony and Dell are both selling non-AIO's and so should Apple.
Where's the choice in desktop systems between $799 and $1500? From Apple well you have 2-4 models that are ALL non-upgradeable AIO's (oh wait you can upgrade the ram, wooooo, the t is on the end of another word).
From Sony, Dell and nearly everyone else there are far more choices, yes some are pure drek, but at least there is some choice. Apple needs to put out more choice.
Yes the AIO desktop has a niche, there are people who prefer it. However no matter how much you deny the facts and figures that show otherwise MOST people who buy desktops buy non-AIO's and that's not likely to change any time soon. After all if you really want an AIO a laptop is a much better choice than a desktop in most cases.
Okay this headless vs. non-headless thing has been beaten to death. And while my money is still on non, something tells me Apple might pull a fast one and surprise us this time.
We know that AIO are out of favour with only a handful of PC vendors going that route. And only Sony's VAIO is barely passable as attractive. Why would Apple re-visit something which has been done before.
And, since the iMac is going priced at a premium (vs. other PC's), it needs a "WOW" factor. Both previous models had that. Each iteration of iMac has been about ground-breaking design. Simply throwing in a G5 in a new sexy AIO enclosure is not enough.
This leads me to think an iMac with a detachable 15", 17" LCD screen could happen. They would all require the VESA wall mounting kit (more $ in Apple's pocket) but wouldn't have a "leg".
Sorry for the repetition if you're also on the other forum.
I just have to mention that digitmes reported there is a glut of FX5200s on the market so nvidia has stopped production for now. they have many to get rid of plus it said in orders of a thousand they cost $16.00 per chip. Now ask why is Apple using a $16 video in its iMac units? FX5200 is cheap crap to make, sell and buy. anyone want 16 dollar video? you would think they could at least spring for a 5700 or 9600.
Apple lost sales in the first half of the year on the PM because a lot of people were waiting for the 3 gig announcement. WHen it came out at 2.5 gigs everyone yelped, but orders went up. Moaning about the delays of the 30" because of component delivery schedules, but that's gonna kick sales up a notch.
Same with the iMac. I was ready to pull the trigger on a G4 20" BTO, but decided to wait when I read that IBM was ramping up the 90nm chip fabrication, starting last December. Holding off until Day One of the new G5 iMac - and have been holding for close to a year. Lots of other iMac purchases put on hold for a G5 also.
Both hurt sales and both were due to supplier problems. One of the joys of pushing core products to leading edge technology, but the orders for the iMac will explode. Those who think it will be a slow seller need to remember the iPod mini that everyone said would not sell.
Hopes of a headless iMac (or PM mini) are going to be dashed until IBM has an abundant supply of G5 chips - then those crying for one will have a chance.
As far as the AIO iMac - it's going to be perfect for me as I'm tired of a mass of computer hardware at home. Just give me an AIO with a 20" screen and I'll be happy. I can BTO it to max out some parts and will live with the rest. (Using a new PB at work with a 23" screen has shown me that I don't need dual 2.5s even at work.)
For "normal customers" an iMac is going to look pretty good when compared to the offerings at CompUSA, Best Buy or Dull - as long as they take a close look. Otherwise the sales guy will say,"Don't get a Mac, they're too expensive and there is not software available for them."
Finally, people moaning about the G5 iMac ("they need to do this or I'll buy a Dull") tend to forget about the joys of Windows. I've dumped my office XP PC because I'm bloody tired of the patches. SP2 is going to be a joy and the mess that will follow will make 3.1 look very attractive to migrate back to.
If you think a computer should work without virus/worm/spywre crap, weekly security patches for problems that have already spread and a LONG wait for Longhorn then get a PC. Just gotta have something that will fly with Doom 3, 4 & 5? Get a hot PC & have a ball.
Apple will deliver what they can and they will continue to be profitable - the only major computer maker besides Dull that makes a profit. Thye will release a design that reflects their best efforts and will use components that provide the best balance they can while remaining within their normal policies. It will be like any other Apple computer: buy it if you like it. Moan on the boards if you don't - and let Apple know what they should have done to be successful.
It's not a secret that the next big thing from Apple will be the new Imac. Apple itself said that a new I mac is on the way. The secret is it's design and specifications.
Ok, I am going to say this... What is Apple threw us all the bone about the iMac just to throw us off the real scent?? I mean, c'mon. When has Apple EVER said anything about future products. They never had, unless it was to surprise us with something else entirely.
With that in mind, it poses the question again of "Next?"
I don't know if it is going to be a computer, DLD, or whatever... However, if it is the PowerBook G5, I will be VERY impressed.

They haven't exactly spent a summer without a flagship consumer model to sell, either. It looks pretty clear by now that they pushed really hard to have a banner year this year, and reality pushed back. No PowerMac update this spring. No 3GHz G5. No new iMac this summer. And much of this because IBM is paying for all their smack talk about how totally awesome Fishkill would be.

According to some IBM documents posted by M Isobe and BadAndy at Ars, this is extremely unlikely unless IBM pulls a rabbit out of a hat: The 970fx can't run below 1.0v, so the sort of very-low-voltage 970fxs that would go smoothly into a PowerBook aren't gonna happen until IBM makes some tweaks — which, according to the same documents, will limit clockspeed.
Looks like a great big opening for Freescale to me, if they can deliver.

why? because other pc-manufacturers do? that's a bad reason.
apple sells its powermac, you can attach a screen to it...
btw, you can attach a external display to every mac currently available (including the imac)

1. no, to provide more options and give something that customers have been demanding
2. powermac starts at 2000 dollars. please tell me you're joking with that
3. and its pointless because all they do is mirror the image of the attached display that takes up the majority of the space. the VGA connector is for presentations....not external displays for normal usage.

yes, and their job is not to create niches in a niche. it's to provide mass appealing products. that is what Jobs said upon is return and that was what was done with the original iMac and the 4 quadrant strategy. those products were not niche products. at the time they offered the best bang for the buck consumer desktop.... Powermacs in desktop or minitower form factor....powerbooks in 12, 13 and 14 inch screen sizes, displays in CRTs and LCD and were planning to add a mass appealing consumer laptop.
any niche product they release fails.....cube, imac lcd, 20th anniversary mac, etc
Nice link. Certainly begs the obvious, PowerBook G5?
or an lcd flat panel remote control (using 802.11g?) for the G5. Supercomputer on your desktop and in the palm of your hand. Ties in with news on the recent patent applications.
applenut. I contribute a lot of comments and ideas to this forum. The comment above is an answer to your constant ranting about how horrible Apple is doing and that you seem to think you speak for everyone here with your statements on how and what Apple needs to do. Your constant negative posts are, well annoying to me and I bet to a lot of other posters. You can keep your comments civilized (look up the word in a dictionary). Also you need to acquire a sense of humor and stop thinking everything you post is "the last word" on a subject and other comments are not necessary. Have a nice day and lighten up.
Apple has really kept the lid on whatever's coming. TS is just publishing a list of parts. The magic is the design. Lots of people have come up with mockups, and that is awesome, but Apple will surprise us.
All I know, is that I'm having a panic attack because there is so little information available. The mockups helped at first, but after a few weeks, they are making things worse.
I hope that the time zone difference will mean news sometime on Monday. Tried to use a time zone converter, but couldn't find the keynote time.
Anyone know what time the keynote is, and what time that will be America/New York?
Paris is 5 hours ahead of EST. So, when you find out the keynote time (aren't they usually 9AM?) just subtract 5 hours and you'll be there. It'll be on the same day, just early in the morning.

I hope the MOSR rumor is true. Even if you aren't able to swap out the graphics card, having the option of getting at least one iMac with a better one would satisfy a goodly number of people.
