HDMI is based on very similar signaling to DVI but you have longer cable lengths and more bandwidth(5Gbps) It supports 8 channels of full bandwidth audio as well. My next DVD and Receiver(AV) will have HDMI. It supports HDCP which is your standard for HD encryption. This means the we'd finally have the potential to have downloadable video that is protected.
I think what'll have to happen is video cards with digital audio inputs so that everything can be pushed down the HDMI cable. One connector keeps it simple.
OK, this is Temporary Insanity. Did anyone else catch what Jobs said when the rambling Sony guy was with him? Here's the full quote: That seemed like an odd thing to say. Maybe he was just happy to finally get the guy off stage.
I reckon Apple and Sony will announce a collaboration to bring blu-ray burners to all Apple Computers. Maybe even a prototype at the NAB. Or a Multiple Cell powered computer that has the ability to play PS3 games.
I read that the Cell was based on the power 5 core. So this could be the chip that powers the G6 Mac. Plus it's rumoured that sony are working on cell based workstations.
Sony is the Apple of the PC world. If they weren't running windows, I'd buy one.
My SonyEricsson mobile phone gives me great joy and happiness for 9months now...
(i lost my T630 a few months ago but a month later bought the exact same model and color)
And it Syncs beautifully with my iBook...
Virtually all Sony AV stuff I have had experience with have been single-handedly really quality rugged stuff. Haven't had too much experience with their AV gear recent years but their mobile phones kick ass.

I agree. Sony makes kick-ass hardware. I especially like their Discman(s). I have one that I bought almost 3 years ago for $55 dollars, and while I don't use it anymore due to my iPod, I do think it served me perfectly well and still continues to do so at rare times.
There more I think about this event, the stranger is seems.
ApplePi correctly expands on what I said. When stating that Apple is creating ties with Sony, we have to ask the question, "Which Sony?"
For reference:Sony Computer Entertainment - PlayStation Sony Music Sony Pictures - movies & television Sony Electronics - including PCs, home entertainment, cameras, camcorders, mobile phones, audio devices, etc. Sony Business Solutions - including professional video & imaging, semiconductor & LCD production, etc.
Screed
Mr Sony, Kunitake Ando, SOOOOO wanted to announce something, the awkwardness, the blank pauses, the plaintive glances at Uncle Steve, desperately seeking guidance! They all screamed:
"Steve, should I tell them? Should I hint?"
There's so obviously something cooking between Apple and Sony, his expression was like that of a gay hairdesser frustrated after a long weekend with the parents, wrestling with finally coming-out over turkey dinner. No offense to Mr Ando, but given the state of Sony these days, the man has a tough job, and was probably desperate to announce some good-big news between Apple and Sony, he needs something successful to say "Hey, I'm a leader too!" - that much I'd bet my Powerbook on.
However the next bit isn't so clear ... though likely, due to Sony's internal battles, defeat is somehow getting snatched from the jaws of victory. Maybe it's about Sony wanting to drop their dead-in-the-water Walkman, and no doubt, now would be perfect timing, the walkman team has been given enough rope to hang themselves, and they have done so admirably. Mr Ando could have very likely used this to justify announcing some sort of Sony Walkman iPod partnership. One can easily see Steve salivating over Apple forcing Sony to the bargaining table over the WALKMAN! Only perhaps the single biggest consumer electronics revolution of the 80's, maybe this is why Uncle Steve was filming it!
Tempting as that is, it's not a for sure - Steve is likely going to wind up owning the 21st century "Walkman" market anyway, Sony or not, so why would he want to strike a deal now with Sony? (fill me in if I'm missing something here folks, maybe a year ago, this would have worked, two years ago, it would've definitely had Apple salivating) and also, Steve's concilliatory pat on the back " ... and maybe someday, music" certainly didn't sound like an insult, but it didn't quite sound like a "damn, and we came so close!" either ... it sounded like a couple who've agreed to disagree on that particulair topic (meaning, digital music players) because the other aspects of their relationship are more important. No, I don't think the walkman thing was it ...
Maybe Sony was going to announce that they where going to incorporate QuickTime 7 into their new Digital Video devices?
Given the proximity to the QuickTime and digital media part of the show, I wouldn't bet my Powerbook on that, but I'd bet a Wolf Blass Gold Label.
Anyway, perhaps that's why he wanted Mr Idei on stage, to force a fait accomplis, hoping that, Mr. Ando would announce it anyway, making it too embarrassing for Sony to back out, no matter what the later internal wrangling at Sony would be.
But, Steve's smile doesn't quite suggest that either - now, maybe he nodded off camera, to egg Mr Ando into making the announcement, but all I saw was a chesire cat smile, the kind of smile that says, "I'm going to be perfectly civil here, but I'm afraid you're totally on your own on this one, and yes, I'd rather you didn't" - which would fit, Steve wouldn't want Mr Idei to make a promise he couldn't keep, especially if it might wind up embarassing Sony and Apple in the future, however tempting it might be. In short, ironically, maybe it was Mr Ando who wanted the fait accomplis - too bad he didn't think of it until he was on stage, it would have been a perfect opportunity, but there's no way Steve couldn've known if the fait accomplis could've worked like Mr Ando could, thus the smile - yes, if this is in fact the case, a definite missed opportunity.
... and who of us haven't had a few of those? I'd tell you her name, but her husband might not approve. <kicks self yet again>
Anyway, this would perfectly explain Steve's concilliatory tone, the guy's an old soldier - if anybody understands that sometimes even the best dreams don't quite work out, it's Uncle Steve: thus, the hand over the shoulder, even after a pretty messed up speech, and a "... and someday, maybe music".
This is the explanation that seems to fit best from what I can gather.

unc. steve was filming it so he can play it over and over again on his prototype PowerBook G5mobile as he j3rks off to it knowing that the day has finally come (pun intended) that the main cheese of the CONGLOMERATE Sony is grovelling at his feet.

a little too graphic for u macCrazy? you must admit it was stunning to see these two grown men that run iconic billion dollar businesses almost get down and give each other bl....
oh okay, i'll cut it out !!!
but overall Apple-Sony can only mean two things: good for Mac users, good for the world. I love my T630 phone.
Can I just ask a question, and then put in an opinion?
Does anyone know about the feasibility of combining Blu-Ray and SACD functionality in the same drive?
What if Sony and Apple are working together on a reciprocal basis, where Blu-Ray is adopted by Apple (the only "real" mainstream vendor of "creative" solutions, given the bundling of iLife) in exchange for Sony Music SACD discs carrying "downgraded" FairPlay-protected AAC HE versions in an alternate "session" on the CD-compatible layer?
Remember that the optical-out on Airport Express is multi-channel aware. How long before Apple start ot leverage that capability?

Like I said, half an opinion, half a question?
... ah, the mind of Jobs, more contemplative fun than one hand clapping, that's for sure.
I'm really curious about Fairplay, and how it works, I wonder if it could get used in such a manner?
FWIW - the vibe I got was that Steve prefers Blu-Ray, but that - due to his "whichever one wins" statement - Apple hasn't made any particulair commitments, known or not.

not too graphic just sick. You shouldn't be thinking about that!? Anyway I thought Steve was trying to kick Sony guy off stage, politely, but he did go on at bit.
Edit: I love Sony phones, they work brilliantly with my computer, it's a real dilemma for me, Motorola iTunes or Sony Ericsson S700i????

I can personally vouch for sony's quality. I bought a multiscan 200ES with my Rev A B&W G3. The PowerMac is long gone, but the monitor still works like it was brand new.
Anyone know if I'll be able to import my MPEG MX clips from my Sony DSC-P10 camera to iMovie HD? All this talk of supporting formats and having the boss of Sony on stage makes me think it might. Similarly with iPhoto '05 I guess
At the moment I am having to turn them into .Mov's with Streamclip, which is a pain when you have loads of clips you want to make a movie from. Not to mention that the output clips are 3 or 4 times bigger than the original MPEGs...

And be replaced by what? SDI?
I'm not that tuned into digital video connection
standards, but if DVI is on the way out, I want
to know before I shell out $2000 for a new
video scaler.

I'm sure if Apple is somehow forced to make a choice due to market forces, this would be the choice Steve would like to make.
