Hmm, I couldn't seem to find that info anywhere... the spec sheet still have DVD & CD-RW models seperate, and I can't see it at the Store... must be having a bad morning.

Anyway, that's GREAT that they have a 8x burning speed in that combo. This just CONFIRMS ( ) that Apple has the best damn laptop on the planet.

Do you see they are shipping the Custom built model with 1 GB RAM?

    48 GB HD

    667 MHz G4

    1 GB RAM

    Mac OS X 10.1

    Looks good to me.

I'd also like to point out that it no longer says Double your RAM for FREE. It appears that those machines now come standard with 256 and 512...

Wow, that custom built thing is a monster.

I was getting the old PB page until just a minute ago - strange.

Too bad they had to increase the price ($200 CDN for me) - but hey, a combo drive with 8x burn speed? Worth it.

No wonder my dealer was trying to give me such a deal on a 667/48/CD-RW last week...

    Here are the complete specs:

    $3,383.00

    667MHz PowerPC G4 @ 133MHz

    256K L2 cache @ 667MHz

    1GB SDRAM memory

    48GB Ultra ATA drive

    Combo Drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)

    ATI Mobility Radeon w/

    16MB DDR video memory

    Gigabit Ethernet

    56K internal modem

    1 FireWire & 2 USB Ports

    Airport Card Included

    Discounted from $3,599 retail price

Now, other than the processor speed, what is the most glaringly out of place specification there? Try:

    ATI Mobility Radeon w/

    16MB DDR video memory

3,400 edu discounted and it ships with 16mb of ddr video memory.

Hey, its wasn't long ago that the PowerBooks were shipping with Rage 128 Mobility chips w/ 8MB of VRAM.

The new machines are awesome, but still not enough of a difference to justify upgrading from my Ti 500...

Also notice that AirPort cards are no longer standard in the Tis... I guess the additional AirPort card cost has been folded into the new optical drives.

The bottom-level PowerBook is a steal. Well, a great deal anyway. Yummy, Combo Drive and G4 in a portable...

Anywhoo, I like this. Now, if Apple upgrades the iBook BEFORE January, there'll be plenty of space in people's heads for the new G5. Less flashy stuff taking up space in people's consciousness.

    This is interesting. From MacCentral

"If you purchased a 550MHz or 667MHz PowerBook after they were last revised on October 16, there will be a way to upgrade your computer, an Apple representative told MacCentral. Although full details are not available, qualifying users will be able to upgrade their CD-RW or DVD-ROM Titanium to a combo drive for US$299 in mid-January. More details on where the service can be done will be posted to Apple's Web site when it becomes available."

Apple's portable line is a complete steal right now.

All iBooks $100 off, standard combo drive in TiBook, etc. Wow, if only if it was like this for the desktops.

It's about time the PBs got Combo drives. I'm glad to see that they burn at 8x, unlike the 4x on the iBook's Combo drives.

    One down, one to go...

Now all I need is a higher resolution screen and the e-check will be in the mail.

    Incidentally,

Is it just me, or on these new TiBooks, Apple is not totally ripping us off on RAM prices. To get a Gig of ram in it, all one would need to do is put in another 512MB chip. Those things are around $200 anyway, so for once Apple's is not a total rip off.

This isn't to say that Apple's is no more expensive, but for once it seems as if one could get a Gig of ram for only around $150 more than it should be. And this RAM is at least Apple certified...

(this was very poorly written. I wonder what that's all about. Our brains are weird things.)

Why do you need a higher screen resolution?

Apple ripping us off on RAM? Outrageous!!!

    Pook,

As it turns out, when you buy the 512MB model both slots are filled (256MB each). In order to upgrade this to 1GB you must buy two 512MB modules. I don't know how much your used 256MB modules would sell for on eBay. :-)

One can get two lifetime warranty "Crucial" 512MB modules for ~$133 each <a href="http://www.axiontech.com/cgi-local/prdtinfo.asp?prdt=MECT512P3S2"; target="_blank">here</a>, which comes to about $266 for 1GB.

    Enjoy!
