Nobody listened to me when I said I had reliable info that the FW 800 absence was temporary and it'd be back as soon as Apple & Intel ironed it out. Glad I was right. Partly because I can gloat, and partly because it's overall a good thing.
Same as the previous model I guess. Has anyone here used a notebook with a numeric pad? I don't think I would like typing "off center".
I'd love to have a numeric keypad, that's one thing I really miss on a laptop, especially with apps that use it for key commands. Although it probably would have to be implemented without having to push the alpha keys too far to the left.
Spyder, not sure exactly what your point is, did someone just piss in your cheerios this morning or something?

No, I hate cheerios more than I hate numeric keypads.
and is likely to pack additional storage capacity, well-placed sources have said.
Like I said back when this was said: "This just means a bigger standard HD people."
lol people get so overexcited sometimes and want to believe this means more than it sounds.
I predicted these EXACT specs earlier this month on the 8th.

So far my apple predictions this year for the most part have all been coming true!
I love this, only $100 off!
I can't wait for my 3 macbook prediction+specs to come true now!
Very good.
But that was the obvious part, except for the price.
You just had to look at the specs of the various incarnations of the 15"PB compared to the 17" PB and extrapolate the specs of the 15" MBP the same way.
So:
- biggest BTO HD
- largest GPU
- processor 1 step ahead.
I would have been surprised if you would have predicted the following specs also:
- 1 x FW800 and 1x FW 400
- 3 x USB2
- 8x double-layer SuperDrive
- 1 inch thickness
And sticked to it during the heavy debat that would have followed @FH
That would have been really cool.
The pricetag was pretty good though.
Much lower and more accurate than I expected.
Due to the fact that the 15"MBP 2,16Ghz has a $2,799 pricetag I expected the 17"MBP to be at least $2,999 maybe $3,099.
Ordered mine a few hours ago with the 2gb of ram...estimated ship date is May 8...and estimated to arrive on May 11. I have been waiting awhile for the 17inch to come out...now I don't have too much longer to wait
No, I hate cheerios more than I hate numeric keypads.
What's to hate about numeric keypads? How else would you type lots of numbers one handed? Or use keyboard shortcuts that specifically use the keypad?

Because in the 15" the drive has to fit under the trackpad, which takes up space. On the 17 it fits because there's room to the right of the trackpad hardware.
Is 2GB *REALLY* the max amount of RAM? Micron (which is what Apple uses) makes a 2GB Memory Module that is the same specs as the 512MB and 1GB that is inside the MacBook Pro.
Crucial sells them for nearly $700 each. It sure would be nice... nobody is willing to try it untill the price comes down I guess.
Comments
I just made the price 100 higher than it is.

I'd expect that the guts are pretty much the same as the 15" MBP, so it should work. The only thing which might not work is the FW 800 port.

That was immature and totally uncalled for.
Size and weight
15-inch MacBook Pro
Height: 1.0 inch (2.59 cm)
Width: 14.1 inches (35.7 cm)
Depth: 9.6 inches (24.3 cm)
Weight: 5.6 pounds (2.54 kg) with battery and optical drive installed (4)
17-inch MacBook Pro
Height: 1.0 inch (2.59 cm)
Width: 15.4 inches (39.2 cm)
Depth: 10.4 inches (26.5 cm)
Weight: 6.8 pounds (3.1 kg) with battery and optical drive installed (4)
Why is it that the 17" can sport the DL Superdrive, it's the same height. Am I missing something?

Boy! And some of you guys think I'm bad!
What I would like to see, now that there seems to be enough 2.16's around, is for Apple to update the iMac's to 2.0 and 2.16.
It's just not right that the laptops, pro or not, be even slightly faster.
Anything that can help Rosetta gain a few percentage points is good.
