Crucial Mac Pro RAM?

Why is it taking Crucial so long to produce suitable memory upgrades for the Mac Pro?

If you have a look at the self service manuals for the Mac Pro, it's Micron/Crucial memory with a silver heatsink that Apple are using themselves..?

Maybe because getting Apple-spec RAM heatsinks into production takes more than fifteen days? I'm guessing that crucial is going to try to mimic the look of the heatsink as well.

    Yeah could be.

Here's the link to the Apple manual featuring the Crucial/Micron memory:

You know you can buy the ram and heatsinks separately and attach them yourself saving money and shipping time...

just get VGA RAM heat sinks.

I've seen DIMM heat sink kits, that's probably more suitable. When I get to the point where I can afford to upgrade and Mac Pro RAM hasn't come down to a reasonable price. I figure maybe I'll pay $20/DIMM more than standard FB-DIMM + separate heatsink cost, otherwise I'll go that route.

I've just opened up my new Mac Pro to find that it has Micron memory installed. Something smells fishy here.

How come Micron's memory is good enough to fit at the factory, but not good enough to sell on their website? I think I smell a contra-deal here.

Is it identical to the RAM on their site, or does it just say Micron on it? Apple only says their RAM has bigger heatsinks. They could well be buying the RAM and heatsinks, tossing them together, and adding a premium.

    The memory from Micron (£566.34):

The same memory from Apple (£1009.99):

By my reckoning, that's a £443.65 ($837.79) price premium for those little heatsinks. At £110.91 ($209.44) each you have to ask what kind of metal they are manufactured from ? solid gold?

Do you think it's worth paying the premium for the 'compatible' product?

Didn't say it was worth it, I just wanted to know if Apple at least had the decency to add said heatsink, or if they bought it with the heat-sink attached.

What is that running, about $75 per heat sink?

Well it's ECC which means more expensive than your standard RAM. On Newegg, ECC 512MB modules list for about $90 each, so you're paying about $10 per heatsink I'd say.

You're not getting robbed nearly as much as your $75 calculation suggests, maybe $20 for two sticks over normal prices at most.

My numbers were off, but I simply don't know how you got your numbers either. I have no problem paying more for ECC. Most of the price difference with standard DIMMS vs ECC DIMM can be accounted for the cost of the additional memory chip. The cost difference between FB-DIMM and Mac Pro FB-DIMM was what I was objecting to.

Your TransIntl link has 2x 1GB Mac Pro FB-DIMMs at $500. Two pieces of standard 1GB FB-DIMM, ECC @ 667MHz at Newegg totals about $340. That leaves a difference of $160, $80 per stick, $40 per heat sink.

Normally ECC isn't so expensive, but the fact that it's a new, specialized type of memory means it's rediculously expensive, $170/GB for ECC 667 FB-DIMM vs. standard 667 ECC DDR2 $120. Most TransIntl Mac Pro certified FB-DIMM offerings are around $250/GB

I dunno - I don't recall Apple ever selling RAM at a competitive price. They're a middle man, so split that $40 by two, half to being a middle man, and half to the piece of mind. *shrug*

I could have tried to improve that explanation, but I'm too busy pricing out RAM at Crucial.com.

Sadly, the prices I stated weren't even Apple's prices. It's from a third party selling Mac Pro compatible memory.
