I love the way Apple is advertising the new 1Ghz PowerBook with SuperDrive to the ski (or snowboard) crowd. That's exactly the kind of people who are actually going to use a DVD-burner on the road. "Winter in Whistler", don't you love the sound of that?
Imagine flying out West for the weekend, landing that nice cliff jump, with your ski buddy filming frow below, and immortalizing the footage on DVD on the flight back so that you can show it to your boring office mates come Monday morning?
Ya, I can't believe this either. This seems to be everyone's best possible case scenario (realistically speaking...). I have a few questions...other than the changes to speed, graphics card, and the addition of the superdrive, are there any other minor changes in this revision? i.e. Any changes in battery power, airport, paint, the addition of a heat pipe (Sean at Macnn insisted there would be a heat pipe in the new pbook), etc etc? I don't recall all of the finer details from the last book, so anyone that can provide a hand...
Matsu - looks like you called it last night. a price drop and superdrive (not to mention radeon 9000 64 and 1 gig!). You have to be pleased for once, right???

All PowerBooks since Pismo (maybe earlier) have heatpipes on the heatsink, believe it or not.

Good For You! Seriously with all the... I would buy it if it was a 1GHz with a superdrive but that's not going to happen talk. I'm glad you all are sticking to your end of the bargin. All the negativity from these boards can resume in one day after I see everyone amazed that it actually happened! I want a new iBook but have no money (see poor college student) and this indigo is showing its age.
Does the motherboard have a slot for an internal bluetooth chip? just wondering because I would love to get it upgraded at a later stage and not have to carry around one of those D-link adaptors.
I've been waiting since the 800Mhz was introduced to buy a powerbook because I wanted one for uni. Never owned a mac before and I am now going to switch.
One question though, for a uni student is it worth owning an internal superdrive?

Actually as a college student follow this course of action if you want really cheap apple hardware. It is a little loophole I found a few weeks ago. As a currently enrolled college student you are elgible to buy a student developer discount. This entitles you to many things not the least of which is 1 purchase of apple hardware at the developer price which is insanely low. Check the prices for hardware at
The cost for a membership is $100 but just look at the savings. Right now I am pricing out the PB 1Ghz with 1GB of RAM and a superdrive for $2299. Isn't the college life grand.

If you'd like to compare a few features, the Canadian Apple Store still has the old PowerBook page up.
Thank you Apple for finally coming through. The cuming part I'll leave to other eyes.
But getting both the SuperDrive and the 1 GHz at once finally tips me over.
I was at the Soho Apple Store yesterday, sniffing around the . (I've long wanted to add an ADC PowerBook to link up with my Cinema display, but I sure did not want to leave my Cube unscreened. But I could not pry anything out of anyone. Got to complement Apple on their "security"
Pioneer indeed was ironclad closed-mouth. I checked via Japanese sources, Chinese and other avenues and got nothing on this. Of course there is a 3-4 week wait on these babies. My order just went into the queu. All I wondered about was after the upgrade to 1MB memory, whether I should have ordered the machine its very own little Cinema HD screen.
You may be relieved to know that I did not, opting to add that a little closer to delivery date if I cannot control myself.
You guys all suck... Even a friend of mine is getting one. I have a feeling Apple is going to make a pretty penny off this update. Its funny the way the mac community is there is group of laptop users that have all been holding out for such an update.. I wonder how many orders from these people have flooded in already? Just imagine what its going to be like when Apple unvails some real "burn cd`s burn dvd`s burn pentuims" desktops.
And I don't want to put a damper on things (heck we bitch about Apple enough)
But there is one thing I really need to know. And I wish someone at cNet would ask Greg Joswiak. Have they addressed the paint issue? Would Apple spend money at this stage of the Powerbook's history to add something to the paint finish to make it more durable?

MY EYES ARE COMING ALL OVER MY KEYBOARD.

Superdrive, Radeon 9000, 1 GHz. Looks like it was worth the wait, eh?
iBook's lookin' pretty sweet as well. Low-end starting at $999, 4 price-points, upper 3 have 32MB VRAM (16 in the low-end) and larger hard-drives.
Both look VERY competetive to me.

Hopefully some of the bashers can tip their cap to Apple for this one.
Wow.

Other than that, it's sounds like a winner.
