BTW a 'velocity sensor' on a phone is a violation of Einstein's special relativity. Accelerometer, yes, 'velocity sensor', no.
    Can you clarify and explain?
Well all *unaccelerated* motion is relative. The laws of physics are the same in all inertial (not accelerating) reference frame. If you're on a plane travelling at a constant 600km/hour with no turbulence then then your iPhone cannot tell if you have a velocity relative to when you were waiting in line at the airport. The gps can calculate your velocity but that's not a 'sensor', in the sense that we use the word for an iPhone, like a heart rate sensor which senses either an electric pulse shining a light through your finger to read the variation in colour as the blood pulses through or via other means. An aeroplane has a pitot tube to measure the air speed nothing like that on the phone. I guess the accelerometer could measure steps and approximate a velocity, but there's no 'velocity sensor' as such.

  • Qualcomm says Android always first to new technology, takes aim at iPhone X features

How often do we hear these tired tropes. At least they can take some cold comfort in their lonely little world while Apple goes nukular on them in the coming battle.

FFIW, I started out my career in the mid 70's in a professional laboratory hand processing E3 and C22 film in a manual sink line, I mention this because colour fidelity was the key to getting along in this industry. Some of the most finicky photographers would bring their 120 rolls to get them processed rather than take them to large facilities. The reversal on E3 was done by hand meaning that one had to physically wave a bright incandescent light over the rolls after they went through the hardener. I had to unroll and hand reverse them for this otherwise there would be an almost imperceptible red colour shift, maybe about 2 or 3 CC. Later on in my career when early digital printing onto film may have taken 4 hours to run off an 11x14 tranny, if there was the tiniest colour shift between the test and the final, all hell would break loose.

It was even worse with hand C type printing where a balance had to be made between skin tones neutrals and overall looks. This is all moot now with the miracles of end to end digital. But what I'm getting at is that I feel I am qualified to pass judgement on the Samsung OLED displays when I inspect them in a shop, which I do from time to time. I had a look at the new Galaxy S8 a few days ago against a iPhone 7 and speaking purely from an objective viewpoint the colour reproduction was abysmal. If I worked to that crappy standard I'd have been out of a job before I even started. The flesh tones are ridiculous, the contrast, the garishness everything is just wrong. I was quite surprised as I did expect something better. With top quality photos maybe it is fine, but when it comes down to images that are not perfect then it cannot find a balance that works.  I really don't understand all the praise that is heaped on them. Also the Galaxy S8 with it's curved screen is atrocious, really ugly in comparison to not just iPhone but some other Android devices. But there you go.

  • Rumor: Apple working with Carl Zeiss on AR glasses to debut in 2018

I also am close to cracking the ultimate VR machine, otherwise known as lucid dreaming. If I suspect I'm dreaming I will see if I can push my finger through the palm of my hand, which I've managed to do one time which is a sure sign I'm dreaming then I just took off for a flying tour around what my brain decided was the city.

Yesterday while being certain I was not dreaming I nevertheless suspected I might be, but when I went to push my finger through the palm of my hand it didn't go through, I sort of watched the top of my finger disappear into my palm and looking at the other side there was a noticeable bump on back of my hand but I couldn't work out if that was normal or not, so I tentatively went to see if I fly could by hurling myself forward but as I wasn't sure, I decided against it.

I couldn't believe it when I woke up later and realised that I indeed was dreaming, I checked the finger palm thing while awake and of course the tip of ones finger does not disappear into your palm nor is there a bump on the other side. Doh! I've since decided to scrap the finger palm test and try to train myself in the more reliable method of looking as some words or numbers, then looking away then looking back at the words. If you're dreaming when you relook it will all be different, your brain cannot reconstruct words or numbers.

If you are deep in a dream and you can work out you're dreaming then 'virtual reality' machines like the one in this article are just plain silly, it's like comparing  two tin cans and a piece of string with an iPhone except even worse. If you manage to wake up in a dream, then there is literally no limit at all to what you can do. None, because all experience is constructed entirely in your brain which is where all non virtual reality takes place anyway. It takes more work but the rewards are literally infinitely better.

  • Retailers, payments association side with Australian banks over Apple Pay negotiations

The only 'innovations' that 'retailers' want to implement are all to do with how to track the customer and how to use any bit of data that are irrelevant to the transaction in order to invade the customers' privacy for the sole purpose of marketing over security and usability.

  • First look: Hands-on with Apple's iPhone X

The naming convention is cleverly subversive and will present Samsung with a problem. Samsung skipped the Note 6 and went from 5 to 7. Similarly Windows eschewed Windows 9 and went from 8 to 10. Apple have gone one better that both of those two, they have not only skipped 9 as well by going from 7 straight to 8 and X, but because X is pronounced 10 they will be able to leapfrog everyone and retire the 8 line of phone design completely and call all their next gen phones iPhone 11. Genius, can't wait to see what Samsung will do they'll have to go from Galaxy 8 to Galaxy 11 just to keep up.

  • Watch: Five tips for shooting high-quality video on your iPhone

I think you're better off with the OSMO mobile gimbal rather than the Zhiyun, the OSMO is magnesium and better quality, plus it works with Filmic Pro which is probably the go to app for iPhone. That way the buttons on the gimbal control the video camera so you can actually do a pull to focus or a pull to exposure using Filmic Pro and the controls on the gimbal. This is über cool. The Osmo is available used for basically the same price as the Zhiyun. Also recommended for that movie look is Moondog Labs anamorphic lens which give true widescreen and Filmic pro unsquishes the film in real time. The moondog labs lens works with still shots too, which you can de squish in photoshop. Plus Filmic lets you shoot in log for colourising post prod. The Osmo and Moondog labs lens are not very expensive.
