  • Congress urges Apple and Google to police foreign apps, app makers

Talk about the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing !
This security committee wants Apple & Google to clamp down on policing while the ongoing antitrust committee wants to lessen their control. I'll bet that the latter won't accept Apple's reasoning that they need control for security and the former won't accept any refusal of policing.
    Strange bedfellows indeed.

  • Computing would be totally different had Apple not been formed 49 years ago, today

I started in 1981 with an Apple ][+ 48K, 143K disk drive, Centronics printer and Zenith green screen and PFS software for 4500 $ CDN. That money could still get you a decent car back then, crazy. I added an aftermarket 16K memory card, an 80 character video card, a Z80 processor card for Pascal. Two years after that I bought an Alpha Syntauri synthesizer that combined a custom boxed keyboard (from Korg) and Mountain Computer synthesizer (2 boards) with light pen. All the slots were full (including disk controller & printer interface cards) and it required one of those fans that hooked over the grill on the side of the case. Then the year after that the Mac came out, oh well, gotta start over.
I have also been well treated in repairs. They replaced a Time Capsule 2 years out of warranty among other great Customer Service over the years. It's a great company.

  • iPhone owners will be able to disable CPU throttling in future iOS version, Cook says

A great move by Apple to assuage all the crybabies. My 6S was crashing at least once a week before the fix and hasn't done it once since the fix. I was very happy and will certainly not touch that switch. Well, I might want to prove a point and try it out one day taking videos at home and having a charger nearby.

All the whining idiots that will flip the switch and turn back their phones to 'sudden crashing mode' might finally understand that Apple was right all along. But of course there will also be the usual unavoidable complainers that will bitch that their phone now crashes unexpectedly while failing to feel any speed increase. Why, I even suspect we might have some here shortly well before the actual update.

  • Apple added more than 30 million paid subscriptions in 2022

So is there only an "earrings report" this time and no "earning call" ? Will there be a call later ? Did I miss some announcement ?
Is that why AI's coverage is minimal this time ?
Granted the record is not quite the blowout of others but still, the stock is trading at around +3% in after hours trading, more than 3 hours after the report and AI usually has more detail and reports on the Q&A of the call.

  • Apple updates Pages, Keynote, and Numbers for the first time in six months

Somewhat disappointing for a full digit revision, seems to be merely small tweaks. I still miss searching and replacing special characters to cleanup files with extraneous tabs, paragraphs, etc, like the Pages of old. I have to resort to Word for that, recordable macros too would be nice for the whole suite. I mostly use and really like Numbers and Pages but finally gave in and picked up the 50 $ Lifetime Microsoft Office for those occasional specialty features, after years of getting by with LibreOffice. For my usage MS Office isn't worth their original sticker price but that special scratched an itch.

  • Apple Silicon will force industry to reconsider use of Intel chips, says ex-Apple exec

And note: you didn't answer my question. I asked you if Apple was going to make a range of CPUs that meet a range of price, performance and application needs. That is what Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, Samsung and MediaTEK all do and have been doing for DECADES. That is what Apple has never done at any time and there isn't a bit of evidence that they are capable of it.
I guess if you ignore the fact that they're using that EXACT strategy for pricing and positioning the different models of iPhones and iPads in the market
And I guess you are doing your level best to ignore my main argument. Mobile is not PC
Move the goalposts much?   I didn't realize that Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm made PCs.  You were talking about a wide range of CPUs for different needs, not complete devices.  And Apple does indeed have different A processors for different needs.  Even if it's currently only on mobile, there's no reason to believe they won't use the exact same strategy when creating new CPUs for desktop.
Exactly, they have indeed usually used Ax SoCs in iPhone and usually AxX (and now Z) in iPads, which usually have extra GPU cores to accommodate the larger screen. Since they already go to that trouble for some extra pixels in a slightly larger form factor, it is confounding that some people can't see that they will also extrapolate the same logic and scale for even larger form factors and processing needs, particularly since … uhh … Mobile is not PC, well maybe unless one is fixated on using mobile SoCs in a PC. Of course Apple has had its share of mistakes in the past, but not many really dumb ones.

Math isn’t my strong suit, but how is going from 42mm to 44mm a 30% increase?
It's the difference in display area
    44mm  977
    sq mm
    42mm  740
    sq mm
    Differ.   32.0%

  • Apple could be the first to use TSMC's 3nm chip process for M2 Pro

Apple's 2022 MacBook Pros may pack new M2 Pro and M2 Max chipsets made with TSMC's latest 3nm manufacturing process, according to a new report.

TSMC, the world's largest semiconductor contract manufacturer, has been steadily building out its 3nm production processes. According to the Commercial Times, Apple could be the first customer to get its hands on those chips.

The report notes that Apple will use 3nm wafers for the first time in the second half of 2022, likely for its M2 Pro chipsets. Future releases built on the 3nm process could include the iPhone-specific A17 chipset, as well as a future third-generation of the M series.

Commercial Times also separately reported that TSMC will begin mass production of its 3nm wafers in September. The report adds that initial yield will be higher than when TSMC switched to 5nm processes.

Compared to previous chipmaking processes, semiconductors made using the 3nm process could bring increased power efficiency and performance to Apple's devices.

2 mentions of process, then wafer, back to process, then wafer and back to process = 4 mentions of process including title versus 2 wafers.
3nm  is not a wafer. It is a process. TSMC is able to ramp up its process technology to firmly keep Apple in its camp as well as numerous other chip design companies.
Technically, of course the expression "3nm" is indeed a process. In any event "3nm" is unfortunately just a marketing expression anyway.

I can only assume that AI being well aware that it is a [manufacturing, production] process applied to [chipsets, releases, semiconductors].
I can only assume that AI assumed they could safely use the single word wafer shorthand rather than more multi-worded expressions, assuming that most readers here would not confuse the issue. So … no biggie.

There is no industry-wide agreement about defining a 3 nm node either (emphasis mine) :
The term "3 nanometer" has no relation to any actual physical feature (such as gate length, metal pitch or gate pitch) of the transistors. According to the projections contained in the 2021 update of the International Roadmap for Devices and Systems published by IEEE Standards Association Industry Connection, a 3 nm node is expected to have a contacted gate pitch of 48 nanometers and a tightest metal pitch of 24 nanometers. However, in real world commercial practice, "3 nm" is used primarily as a marketing term by individual microchip manufacturers to refer to a new, improved generation of silicon semiconductor chips in terms of increased transistor density (i.e. a higher degree of miniaturization), increased speed and reduced power consumption.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_nm_process

It's just a number they use relative to their previous process to indicate some reduction in node geometry of different transistor technologies.
Full disclosure I didn't know that either before looking it up now and am a bit disappointed, I thought it actually meant an actual size.

  • What's new with macOS Sequoia's System Settings

the macOS Sequoia Passwords app is one of the best features coming to Sequoia. Hopefully it won't be to buggy by the fall. Ay least I can then get rid of my iPassword app and subscription.
I've used 1Password for a decade and have been looking at macOS' forward progress for a few years now to get rid of that subscription as well. Their last revisions are going backwards and less useful, especially since they've introduced their useless 'Suggestions' and insist on defaulting to it. I used to get to my bank account with only 2 clicks but it gradually takes more and more with every revision and now it takes 7 clicks. The dropdown in Safari is no longer resizable, the passwords of many websites are no longer filed in, etc.
