  • Apple under fire from U.S.-based class action suit over Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabiliti...

A bunch of greedy a-holes and ambulance chasers hoping to cash in big on something that isn't Apple's fault. LewK

  • Don't buy the 'Make Something Wonderful' Steve Jobs book on eBay, because the book is free...

I downloaded the EPUB file and have started reading it.  I've enjoyed Steve's words in the part i've read, but I think someone really blew it on some of the explanatory text.  There are some definite errors in those parts!

In Part 1, 1976-1985, the description of the Apple ][ in the second paragraph is just flat out incorrect.  The Apple ][ certainly did not have, as implied, built in cassette storage or, as stated, a built in color screen!  I bought one in 1979 and while I don't have that one anymore, I do have another Apple ][ in my storage room.  It had an audio output and input that you could connect to a tape deck, reel-to-reel or cassette, for storage but it was very slow and awkward to work with.  It also had a video out that you could feed to a separately purchased little box that would convert it to an RF feed that you could connect to a TV (B&W or color) for use as a 40 character by. I believe, 24 line display.  Apple did sell some monochrome green CRT monitors.  I have an Apple /// monitor on another shelf.  When it came out 5 years later, the Macintosh didn't have a built-in color screen either!

  • Four more states are jumping onto the DOJ's antitrust suit against Apple

Have you ever wondered why Apple's Pages app is so limited in functionality.  Functionality that it use to have has been taken out.  From what I've read and been told, this likely due to being asked to make is less capable so as to not compete with Microsoft's Word.  This sounds highly likely to me.

As to the functionality that has been removed, try replacing tabs or carriage returns.  There use to be an Advanced option in the Find & Replace window but that has been eliminated as well.  I keep an old version of Pages running on my 12 year old Mac Pro tower because the older version of Pages is MUCH more powerful than the current one.

The Feds want to hurt Apple because they don't like that it supports privacy and security.  They really don't like that we can Message each other with end-to-end encryption.  And that they can't decode some of the things stored on iCloud.

  • The best alternatives to Apple's discontinued AirPort routers

Do any of these options have an audio output jack like the Airports do? One of the uses I have of them is feeding my iTunes music to different rooms in the house. Beats having to run speaker wire everywhere and I have a several perfectly usable older receivers that I can use. The main advantage I had found with the Airport units is that configuration was generally MUCH simpler than the other access points and routers - even with some unusual setups.

  • New EU rules would force Apple to open up iMessage

What's pretty screwy about this is that they evidently haven't bothered to talk to their security people.  A lot of government agencies in the US and I suspect in Europe as well, use iMessage because it is encrypted end to end, and considerably more secure than SMS.  I know that I read that the US Armed Forces were using iPhones and iPads as well as Macs more and more due to the better security.

I suspect that Apple would lose some sales if they simply said they wouldn't support this and stopped selling iPhones in the EU, but I bet people would find still find a way to buy them there - black market, mail order, or having a friend pick one up while on vacation in the USA.

If you've read about what is coming out in Great Britain about the use of WhatsApp by government officials it is quite an eye-opener.  I'd be amazed if the same sort of thing wasn't happening in the EU.  (They literally laughed at you)

  • Samsung T9 SSD review: Next-generation portable storage

Not only is there the issue of using ExFAT but you tested on an M2 Max.  What difference would there be with an M3 Max and the drive formatted as APFS.  And as noted, the M2 and M3 systems support Thunderbolt 4 which, according to Wikipedia, supports USB4 and is suppose to be 4 times faster than USB 3.2 Gen 2.1.

  • KGI says 'iPhone 7' won't have 'many attractive selling points,' predicts competitors to outperform

This article reads like a press release from KGI Securities. I wish AI would stop publishing BS like this just because it is about Apple.
  • Too soon? Apple's new iPhone 7 ruffles feathers with Lightning audio, Home button changes

I know a fair number of professional musicians and audio people and they nearly all use iPhones and Macs.  I don't think I've seen a roadie that didn't have an iPhone in the last 4 years and the same for the musicians.  The biggest complaints I've heard so far are about the inability to charge and listen without buying yet another dongle.  When flying all over the world, they often need to be able to charge and listen concurrently for well over 12 hours straight. And since they are sometime composing or editing while on the plane, wireless just doesn't cut it.  The latency issues as well as recharging make it a show stopper.  This is also going to be an issue if Apple removes the headphone jack from the MacBook Pros.
