  • Apple developing iPhone and iCloud encryption that counters FBI-requested workaround, reports say

LOL. Each time you turn on your smart phone phone its tracking your location and everything you do including your contacts etc allowing Apple to resell your info to 3rd parties who pay big bucks for it. Its called data mining
Absolutely, if you are an Android user. As for Apple, i don't know where you got that piece of info. Last time i read their financials, their income was entirely related to hardware sales and subscription services... do you have access to financials that the rest of us don't?

Apple sees it as their primary differentiation that they DON'T have an interest in your personal stuff. That (and a superior sw/hw integration) is how they stand out compared to the Androids of this world...

  • Apple's competition is going to have a tough year in 2016

I hate these kinds of articles.  DED I presume?  AppleInsider doesn't do itself any favours by printing this kind of one-sided garbage.  A "year in review" type of article should contain the minuses as well as the plusses.

A few that come to mind:

    - the very, very late debut of the very, very expensive Apple Watch
    - Apple TV being so delayed that it actually has last year's internals (for twice the price)
    - the most talked about feature of the new Apple TV (skinny cable package) pulled at last second.
    - finally updating the iPad mini after three full years of languor.
    - the new $200 trackpad!
    - the new iPad that's more expensive than a laptop but half as capable.
    - Advertisements in the OS

I know others won't necessarily agree with me on all of these but the point is that there are many points of view and also pros and cons.

These long, poorly written articles full of bitterness, that praise Apple to the heavens, while jousting against imaginary critics are tiresome, unfair, and uninteresting once you realize how biased they are.  Please stop. Someone knock that chip off Daniel's shoulder so he can write properly.
Dear "Professor", you joined this forum in Dec 2015 and have since made 115 negatively biased comments about Apple... Is that your full-time occupation? Or perhaps part of the internet media army trying to portray problems that don't really exist because you have an agenda?  :*

Re: "Re: "Our job is to protect our customers"
Is it? Apple's job is to make sure that their mobile phones can connect to industry standard telecommunications protocols, otherwise no one would buy their phones. And that's about it as far as Apple's 'job' is concerned. If people want to hold all their banking info and other info they want to keep from the eyes of others on their phones that use the public utilities then that is their concern, not Apple's. You can have all the total privacy you want if you don't use a phone of any sort or send eMails across public networks.

Obviously Apple have an incredibly huge stake in keeping their customers' data safe. This is one of their main selling points, since the rest of the industry (spearheaded by Google and Facebook) decided NOT to keep it safe but rather exploit and re-sell all your information in the name of targeted advertising.

Tim Cook cleverly saw this early on and decided to make this the very pillar of Apple products.

Not sure why people keep questioning this. It's quite logical that protecting customer data is in Apple's economical interest (and those interests are aligned with an increasing share of the educated population).

  • Apple A9 chip fab TSMC reports record earnings, casting further doubt on 'Peak iPhone'

    JamesBB said:
The real story in all this supply chain nonsense is this: The 6s/6sP is selling less relative to 6/6P, and they may have to adjust the production mix, but the combined pair of 6/6P/6s/6sP will almost certainly outperform total sales of last year (as Tim Cook said it would...). Just look at the weekly Fiksu stats and that is the exact picture it paints. 2016 will be a stellar year for Apple.
God now even John Gruber used the phrase "peak iPhone" on his latest podcast. Sigh. I hate that phrase and people have been saying it for the past 4 years. If your theory is correct maybe that's how Apple needs to frame things. That's why I think Cook should focus more on install base rather than specific sales figures. But if revenue and ASPs are down from the same quarter a year ago that probably won't matter.
"Peak oil" was used to drive oil prices to 140$/barrel... as it turns out, oil was abundant and alternative sources were plentiful - and now a barrel is cheaper than distilled water... these "crowd theories" are designed by clever people only to create misconceptions about reality and mislead the crowd, so that they can take advantage.

Be skeptical if something becomes "common knowledge" in the media...

  • Tim Cook: FBI is asking Apple to create 'software equivalent of cancer'

Tim may not have the charisma and guru-like following Steve Jobs had, but he is pretty damn unique in his own ways, and in many ways probably a more effective leader than Steve was. Steve would have exploded in rage 10 times by now.... Tim keeps up the diplomacy, but with a very firm hand on the wheel of principles and values.

I don't know of other CEO's with that level of genuine and heartfelt integrity. Wow.

  • Apple's competition is going to have a tough year in 2016

Everyone talks about the iPhone (which will likely continue to grow by the way), but the number of meaningful (high growth/high margin) revenue streams is steadily expanding. Analyst predictions are almost entirely based on existing products. But why would the largest company on earth not expand their product portfolio and think about the future?

They may become a car company, media company or a produce other ingenious things that nobody thought about... Whatever it is, it will be high growth/high margin and will have a thick moat around it.

The real strength of a company is based on the ability to continuously evolve from status quo. Apple has in this respect the best foundation of any company. Their possibilities are endless. They have the financial strength, the intellectual capacity and an inherited zen-like capacity from Steve Jobs to focus on what is really important, and they are not playing defense, like everyone else.

None of that is modeled into any analyst forecast. The ingenious "predictions" of analysts are limited to something that resembles iPhone cycles of the past. 7/7S, 8/8S, 9/9S...

Not too long ago, Apple was an iPod maker... (and by the way only Apple figured out how to generate billions from a fancy USB stick with a headphone jack!)

  • Apple releases Apple TV Tech Talks video series for building better tvOS apps

I have used the 4th gen Apple TV for about 3 months now, and i must say, i am becoming a bigger fan every day i use it. Now, i can't really imagine going back to the old ways of watching TV. I hardly watch any live TV anymore (apart from morning news) and i rarely see interrupting commercials.

I see what i want, when i want, from start to end without interruptions - and all with the simplicity of one single (and beautifully designed) remote.

Sure, we need more original content and there is still work to be done on the app store, but with every software update, it is getting better. Keep them coming!

  • Apple Music search stops working for many users

Apple Music is a mess. counter-intuitive interface, personal playlists of my own music hidden layers deep in a clunky, unresponsive interface. They need to spend a lot of time fixing Apple Music, making it way to use and completely overhaul iTunes. As a long term Apple fanboy, I am disillusioned and fed up of the mess. First subscription I've cancelled, not worth the money until the interface is much improved and my music is given the same priority in the interface as the Apple Music library.
All music services are at a low level of maturity at this stage. I agree with you that there is plenty of room for improvement, but being a previous Spotify and Pandora subscriber, don't see this as an Apple specific issue.

All of them needs to improve to really be worthwhile the subscription fees...
