  • Apple quietly bought $17B more after record high $24B Q2 stock repurchase [u]

"Apple is already leading the tech industry"

I can't see how that is even remotely defendable. Apple remains primarily a CE company which is heavily dependent on other - leading - tech companies.

I could argue that both Samsung and Huawei are leading the tech industry as both companies far outstrip where Apple swims in its particular stretch of the river.

As for what could have been done to better invest all that cash, well there were plenty of opportunities that simply weren't put on the table.

The reality is that Apple has invested little into R&D in terms of percentage of revenues.

They could have easily moved into the cloud areas that Microsoft, Amazon and Google currently occupy. They could easily have invested in future communications technologies like 5G. They could have invested heavily in one of current phones weak points: battery technology. They could have moved into satellites.

The truth is there was little foresight in the future. They played safe and hoarded instead. That isn't so much of a criticism from a business perspective, as Apple does now have a nascent penchant for buying in expensive technologies or businesses (Beats, intel 5G, content creation etc).

The result is Netflix slipped away and now Apple (very late to the party) is playing catch-up. 5G modems? Catch-up again. iPhone (the big revenue generator)? Catch-up again. Audio streaming? Catch-up again.

As for leading the tech industry. I disagree.
You’re not talking about investing you’re talking about gambling. Hindsight gives you the ability to have these wonderful forward thinking ideas. Oh, and as DED has repeatedly said, that part of the river is where profits go to die.

Interesting that the Mac has now become the the computer for "Serious" computer users and Windows/PC the computer for those that play games.
Nice logic there!  Because Windows excels at gaming, you're consensus is that no one uses it for "serious" computing?  Tell that to the 90+ percent of businesses that use Windows servers and clients for their business.  How many businesses would you estimate use Mac to run their business (accounting, HR, management, etc.)...you know the real "serious" stuff?
Sure, Windows business computing like waiting for virus scanning to complete, living in fear of whether your system will boot after the weekly MS OS fix update, hours of researching what tedious registry manipulations are needed to make your system work correctly, wondering what the heck is on your computer screen after corporate IT pushed out their monthly changes. Yeah, Windows Business Computing.

  • Rosenblatt throws in the towel on AAPL coverage

It’s not surprising. These companies that provide analyst reporting lump companies into different segments so they can contrast and compare providing investors their version of where to put their money. Apple doesn’t really fit into any of their current segments. It’s a stupidly simplistic 19th century methodology being used in the 21st.

  • The bell is tolling for Intel Macs with the arrival of the first Apple Silicon specific fe...

Some might say that everything the M1 system can do, the Intel system can do just as well. That's completely missing the point of this article. These new changes, facilitated by a consolidated hardware platform and software teams are an exciting glimpse into a future vision of personal computing. It's the sheer totality of the changes across their OS's that excited me the most. It's finally seeing a vision of personal computing come together that isn't a hodgepodge of 1980's design hardware and software duct tape thats been limiting the platform for ages. the changes in Notes, for instance, represents a paradigm shift in in how we will be able to consolidate information. On device Siri frees us from the limitations of having to always be connected and makes the iOS devices even more useful. These are just a few of the changes that, combined with the others, will be the basis for even more advanced systems in the future. Now, where are my shades?

I mean just turn your phone into Apple and they recycle it. How complicated is this? They make that very clear.
Generaly speaking, repairing something is more environmentally friendly than recycling it.  That's the point.

Reduce, reuse, recycle, in that order.
Repairing broken electronics these days involves replacing the broken parts. These parts are too small, too fragile or too complex to be repaired so end up in either the recycle bin or landfill. The small repair shops don’t have the resources to recycle and reuse that Apple does. So, I’m thinking that repairing sounds good in theory it isn’t as clear cut as you imply.

  • iPadOS 15 confirms Apple's M1-equipped iPad Pro is a V8 engine powering a Ford Pinto

I plan on updating to the 2021 iPad Pro 12.9 inch from my 2018 iPad Pro soon so first off thanks to all those who are canceling your orders, it’ll shorten the delivery time for my order, Second, I want the latest iteration of the iPad Pro so I can benefit from the future updates that will come for the M1 chip based devices. Thirdly the screen is better than any other out there although that’s really a need it is a plus.

Tim Cook now has a fiduciary duty to devote all M1 Max production to bitcoin mining.
If a large PC manufacturer placed an order for 10 million M1 Pro CPU chips at $1000 each, Tim Cook would have a fiduciary duty to take their $10B. Not just for the $10B, but for the $100B in orders that would come shortly thereafter when everyone realized it was time to leave Intel. Why would anyone turn down $100B in orders?
Why would a $2T company who’s worth is derived by being the sole consumer of its hardware turn down $100B? Hmm, let me think about that.

  • iOS 15 adoption rate appears to be lagging behind past updates

“ It's likely that the reduced adoption rates are because of a change in Apple's update stance. The company is no longer forcing users to install the latest operating system version to gain important security updates.”

    99.9% off the reason.

“Apple's set of iOS 15 features -- including the controversial-but-delayed CSAM detection system -- may also be playing a part.”

    0.1% of the reason.
Agree.  Why would a feature that most people don't know or care about and that was pulled be paying a part?
Because people don't trust that Apple isn't doing it anyway due to the entirely out-of-the-blue way they announced it? That said I was on Big Sur until about a week ago. There was nothing compelling enough for me to spend days fixing things after they break as Apple deprecates random core bits of the OS.
