  • Apple diagnostics software blocks third-party repairs of 2018 MacBook Pro and iMac Pro

At this point apple is just seeing how much sodomy the fan base is willing to take. In my circles developers and designers are abandoning the apple eco system in droves. Interestingly my non tech friends are lining up to have the prestige of paying a huge premium for the Apple Shiny.

  • 'iPhone SE 2' with A13 will cost $399 says Ming-Chi Kuo

I don't care too much about it being cheap (within reason) I just want a small form factor.

  • Microsoft's low-cost Surface Go takes aim at Apple's entry-level iPad

Microsoft is releasing some pretty decent gear these days. After switching my main work machine back to windows after 14 years of being loyal apple fan due to the dismal state of apples hardware I must say they are getting close. I still thing OS-X is the better OS but overall win10 with the more powerfull PC hardware outperfoms apple in my use case for far less money.

So well don MS. There surface offerings are really starting to appeal to me, really considering the jump for my next laptop / tablet also.

  • Apple's new 16-inch MacBook Pro is built to blaze through pro workflows

Reading the thread I get the feeling that some commenters feel personally attacked by the idea that adding a HDMI port in 2019 would add utility to a pro class machine.

Being of the opinion that a pro machine could be better and more practical if it offered the ability to connect with commonly available technology is not the same as hating on a machine. It is possible to see the improvements and positives of a machine, to like the machine, but at the same time to also want features that would make it even better in the current tech landscape within the context of a common use case.

Yes, USB-C is the future, but HDMI / Ye Ole USB is still the present. On this point too, commenters have to jump to extremes lamenting that tech that is still in common use is kin to ancient tech; citing VGA (which ironically is usually the other option to connect projectors in fixed installations) and RS232 connections WTF?.

Perhaps its the word "pro" that gets people all upset, as being "pro" is so on trend. I guess in today's terms the moniker is accurate most everyone uses a computer in some way to make $$$ and so is indeed pro. Power User would likely be a better fit for what used to termed "pro".

At least in my experience power users tend to have the distinct need to both be on the cutting edge but also the need to easily interface with current commonly available technology especially if they operate in a IT environment.

Wanting a smooth transitioning phase between technologies is not the same as hating / being against new tech.

Of course Apple is not alone in the "fuck em" make them buy a dongle / special cable strategy with some people rightly pointing to the Dell XPS.

However, in the case of dell the XPS is "flag ship consumer" while there latitude7300 is "business" its close the same specs as the XPS but also with a mix of new and curren tech ports....... for "pros"   I mean ...... power users.

Apple Insider never fails to entertain. :) flame away...... :)

ohhh.. there is one last thing:

Its possible to simultaneously own a Dell, Surface Pro, Mac Book Pro and custom rig. And to enjoy each one for its strength and to lament its weaknesses.  Well at least for power users.

  • Apple unveils all new 13-inch MacBook Air with Retina display, Thunderbolt 3 and more

Apple should introduce air quotes to the product line, ie: iPad “pro” “mac book” air.

First thing I thought on seeing the headline, “how many useful features did cost cutter Tim remove.

  • 'iPhone 11' camera & new 'A13' chip element will provide far better photography

here I thought the bump was ugly as hell, then they gave us the notch. now they are taking it to the next level; the hideous looking multi-cam. Just watching apple from the side lines these days, my last remaining apple product is my SE. Good thing apple does not need my annual 3k spend.

I can't see a SE sized phone coming, sad days ahead when it dies. there seem to be no more small phones in the market.

  • Apple's Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro up for preorder on Amazon, supposedly ships on May 30

pff, I’m waiting for the magic key board PRO.

the best thing about this forum is listening to the fan boys defend apples insane pricing, or essentially anything apple no matter how egrigious.
    I defend everybody's pricing.

It's called capitalism and the free market and freedom. Companies are free to price their products at whatever price point they wish, and consumers are free to either purchase said products or not.

If Ferrari wants to release a new car tomorrow and price it at 6 million dollars, I don't have any problem with that at all.

If Samsung wants to release a new phone tomorrow and price it at $10,000 dollars, I'm totally fine with that.

The same applies to Apple. Apple can price their stuff at whatever price point they please and that they feel is appropriate and I am free to make a decision regarding if I want to purchase said product or not.

Some people sound like a bunch of commies and entitled ignoramuses.

no shit sherlock, the fascinating thing is people buying the stuff. I find it entertaining in the same way as watching people injure themselves doing stupid shit on youtube. which I also think everyone should be free to do with whatever dumb shit they think floats theire boat ie. shelling out $1k for a piece if alu and proclaiming how its the best 1k they have ever spent.  go for it!

  • Apple's latest iPad Pro ad asks, 'What's a computer'

    dewme said:
Not sure why people get uptight about calling an iPad a computer. The Apple Watch, iPhone, Apple TV, and iPod Touch are also computers. It really comes down to what you consider "work" to be. If reviewing and annotating a document or spreadsheet is "work" for you then whatever device you do it on is doing "work." If writing code is "work" for you then doing it one a notebook or Mac Pro or iPad pro is still "work." Just because some huge legacy application designed for last decade's platforms doesn't run on a modern handheld or padtop platform doesn't mean the modern computing platform is not a real computer. Heck, an iPod Touch is several orders of magnitude more powerful than the ancient PCs that earlier generations of professional programmers used for writing Turbo Pascal and Borland C++. Maybe it's the "work" tools that have not kept pace, with massive bloated monstrosities like MS Visual Studio 15 barely able to run acceptably on quad core Xeons with 16 GB of RAM and SSDs. (Is there a reason why applying a service release update on VS needs to take 6 hours to complete on a high end box?)

Modern computing is all about being able to "work" wherever, whenever, and as opportunistically as possible and with very few compromises. It's not and never will be about one size fits all for every task. Having several different Apple form factors to choose from and making more and more content, of both production and consumption variety, portable across more platforms is a blessing that accentuates the Apple Advantage. Whether it's a handheld form factor or the iCloud, it's all part of the contiguous computing fabric that exists today. This diversity in computing capability and portability will only get wider and better in the future. New form factors will appear and existing form factors will evolve.

The cliche arguments and blog stock answers about what is production and what is consumption are moot unless you want to stay firmly entrenched in the past. It's not a zero sum game and overlaps in capability and capacity will continue to fluctuate. Eventually the legacy apps will fade and be replaced by modern apps that leverage a wider swath of the computing fabric. But there will always be certain computing form factors that have situational advantages over other form factors for specific purposes, times, and places.  And no, nobody is going to take away your big desktop box with 2D graphics. It may become less relevant or harder to justify, but it'll still have a place just like antique cars still have a place, like in parades, car shows, old timer reunions, museums, movie re-creations, etc.
"It really comes down to what you consider "work" to be"

Agreed. It all boils down to jobs to be done. Pick the right device / computer for the task at hand.
It's all about the operating system and IOS in its current form, the way everything is locked down is clearly designed for consumption and casual light weight editing. Nothing currently beats a mouse and keyboard for getting shit done. The iPad Pro is awesome for getting laughs from the IT Department or from anyone who actually has a clue. :)

When a week goes by without my girlfriend asking to use my Mac Book Pro to complete simple tasks she can't do on her iPad I may consider that you can do work on an iPad. I thought I could ditch my laptop for short trips but even with VPN and SSH apps loaded it's just too shitty and slow an experience that I just lug my laptop around.
