  • First look: Benchmarks put Apple's entry-level $4999 iMac Pro to the test

....until it gets throttled in favor of iPad Pro to fulfill Tim's vision of the PostPC era.
It wouldn't even surprise me anymore
So, why would that happen, exactly? I'd think there's no low-voltage condition on an old battery to compensate for, here.
There's significant thermal/ ventilation compromise in housing this type of machine in a consumer enclosure - especially with glue being the main mounting method instead of slightly more expensive but for thermal conductivity far more preferable screwed mounting on metal chassis parts.
This class of machine deserves its own casing - not a grey-sprayed consumer case where fancyness is the main design objective.
With all dust collection/overheating consequences of the closed setting.
Note: it is free for anyone to misinterpret criticism like this as trolling, but that says more about "offended" readers and their ability to reason with solid counter arguments

  • Alibaba researchers reportedly jailbreak iOS 11.2.1 on iPhone X

what killer apps does jailbreaking offer these days?
Wondering the same thing. iOS is so evolved and advanced anymore. Why risk it? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
To get rid of slow, framedropping animations, the notifications mess, lacking appointments on the lockscreen and other UI shortcomings that ridiculize iOS. Even moving the text cursor a single position is a headache. For only 10 years now.

  • Advanced TrueDepth camera, Face ID "major drivers" of iPhone X user satisfaction

A limited survey probably made under a few customers that need to justify their purchase. With solutions for issues that didn't exist or were made up by Apple themselves. Clever marketing - but for me it is just too much hype only to get rid of a few bezels (that is, hardly...) Hopefully animojis bring customers in higher atmospheres to distract them from the intolerable design issues remaining (shatter prone glass housing, limited battery, protruding camera) 2018: Time to switch to a manufacturer that gets it right instead of those throttlers from Cupertino - mimicking the Steve that once was

  • How Apple Watch laid the foundation for iPhone X

The conclusions in this article would be reasonable if Apple was 1/10th of its size and financial momentum.
At it's current investment and patenting level it is just plain embarassing to bring out a phone with double glass sides, mediocre battery life, and 2015 level inductive charging - whatever it's accomplishments (faceID) that flourish up mediocre advancements in the most needed area's.
And oh, the iPhone X design is nice but sorely needed if not 2/3 years late.

  • Why Apple's Siri needs to become an 'ambient' ecosystem to compete against Amazon & Google...

Apple should have been in this market first. Siri is consistently terrible and it’s embarrasing for them that Amazon have come from no where to create this whole Echo/AI market. I just can’t understand what Apple and Google are doing with all their money and knowledge. They are both now playing catch up to Amazon? A shopping store.

I hope Apple intend to do something more than just look out the windows in their new campus.
Stop with the trolling about Siri. You have no clue about Siri or its capabilities.
That's exactly how Apple VP's take sound criticism ("bad week"- Pavlov reaction)
    How Ballmerized can you be.

  • Apple releases first iOS 11.2.5, watchOS 4.2.2, tvOS 11.2.5 betas

Why name it 11.2.5 not 11.2.2?
I can't ever remember Apple skipping versions before.  Can anyone else?  Maybe they already have watchOS 4.2.1 and iOS 11.2.2-4 planned as security releases due out imminently...

    Odd. Totally odd.
Pfff. Parallel versions, working out bug fixes for bug fixes that were supposed to fix issues, it is such a mess

  • Spotify, others complain to EU about Apple's 'unfair' App Store practices

Of course Spotify still makes a loss (they chose to do so to gain market share, you have to be pretty ignorant not to see that)
    The problem here is cross-subsidizing.
If a trillion dollar company can freely hash their mony around in different markets, no other one can compete in such market unless he has the same momentum in others. Which effectively has the same effect as a true monopoly (which it by definition, isn't)
Apple (and Google, Amazon) pay for offices, server costs, stellar salaries & promotions, and can afford to make a near-permanent, severe loss without anyone even noticing by their lack of separate reporting/financial transparency.
The level playing field that Spotify is asking for is a fair deal - market regulators have to stand up more proactively.

  • Apple SVP Eddy Cue to participate in Q&A session at Pollstar Live! conference in February

Eddy's got a lot of 'splainin' to do!
    What are you referring to?
I don't enjoy spreading negativity about others (unless they're of poor character, not the case here), but the problem areas are hard to ignore:

-Maps bumbled, responsibilities taken over by other execs
-Siri's spearheading of the voice-first revolution and its multi year head start completely squandered, siri is improving recently but still annoying, and now taken over by Federighi
-app store bumbled, taken over by Schiller
-Apple Music 1) not nearly as popular as it should be (as the default music service on the iPhone); 2) has a (largely well deserved) reputation for only being good at pop and hip hop; 3) has an extremely myopic lack of social features in Apple's most social app; and 4) has TERRIBLE support for sub-generas
-Apple's social/media/culture efforts have pretty much been failures over the past several years (TV bundle?, planet of the apps, carpool karaoke, apple news just regurgitating biased, silo'd news (seems to maybe be getting better though)
-apple TV keeps dropping my airplay connection, so frustrating (more of a personal, anecdotal gripe, not sure how big of an issue this is)
-pretty slow homekit support roll out (I have a ton of homekit devices)
-pretty slow merchant adoption of apple pay (I seek out and try to use this as much as possible)

    Positives:
-Buying Beats was a great call, best thing Apple could do to expand their cultural influence and clout, although Apple Music's focus on Apple-directed content over facilitating users' ability to find what they like seems pretty misguided
-free upgrades to 4k movies is cool
Agree. But more principal is the failure to generate content business/agreements depite being stationed in LA for so many years and the ambition  to "dominate the content industry". That strategy failed miserably, and is currently downplayed as a "toe in the water". Now fanciing himself with Hollywood celebs, basketball teams, and all the scenery "belonging" to his perceived stardom. His addiction to public attention is exemplary. What a sad, incapable guy.
