It would be great if you could test the thermals and sustained performance.

  • Apple wants iPhone to be proof of identity and replace passports

It could work as an alternative, like using Apple Pay when you forgot your wallet at home, but won't work as a replacement.
Just wait for them to start chipping everyone.

  • Testing thermal throttling and performance in the 2018 i7 Mac mini

Great info and article. It's nice to see that the new Mac mini does a decent job of managing the CPU performance and throttling. Did the fan get noisy during this testing? I ask because I use my Mac for music production, and a noisy Mac mini would not be welcome when recording vocals.
It was surprisingly quiet. I think quieter than either the 13" or 15" 2018 MacBook Pro.
But of course, it's subjective. You may think it's loud.

  • Mac desktop shootout -- $3500 iMac 5K versus $1700 Mac mini

    jurassic said:

"That's almost half the price the iMac and would leave you $1,600 for a monitor —except that you lose $400 of that if you add flash storage to the Mac mini that's comparable with the iMac's." "The 5K display is detailed and color-accurate, using the same exact panel that comes in LG's UltraFine 5K display. Bought separately, that display retails for $1,300. " "The iMac also comes with Apple's Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Keyboard in the box, so you don't have to worry about buying peripherals." ($178) "you can easily hook up an eGPU with the same Radeon 580 graphics card that comes in the top-spec iMac 5K for around than $500 total."

So to bring the Mac mini up to the same features and specs as the iMac 5K it would cost $4,078 TOTAL ($1700 + $400 + $1300 + $178 + $500)! Buying the iMac 5K in this example would save you almost $800 compared to a similarly configured Mac mini!

It obviously makes more sense to get the iMac if you want the 5K display. The Mac Mini makes a lot of sense for someone who already has a mouse, keyboard, and display on hand. Or, just someone who's fine with a cheap 4K monitor. If they already have a supported GPU to put into an eGPU enclosure, even better.

  • Apple Watch Pride face is blocked in Russia by watchOS 5

The amount of people that are upset over this shows just how well propaganda works. Just be happy you have freedom over here in the States. Russia is perfectly fine without pride watch faces and bands.
(My personal opinion that is protected by the first amendment)

  • iPhone XS, XS Max have new power chip designed by Apple, extra antenna band

Two things that I haven't heard a word on:
    1)   Does it use an Intel or Qualcomm modem?
    2)   How does Gigabite LTE compare to 5G?   Is it worth waiting?
Intel, just read the full teardown.

No word on the wireless charging coil? The extra speed came from nothing, or they just didn't check for differences?

The switches don't use hardware to disable the microphone, they just disable the "Ok Google" and "Alexa" commands.
    That's my take on this.
Incorrect at least with Google Home. The hardware switch really does turn off the microphone. 100%. You can find teardowns that show the on/off toggle switch physically interrupting the circuit.

    Mic on/off

Press the microphone mute button on the back of the device

"Note: Muting the microphone prevents Google Home from listening or responding..."

EDIT: And apparently incorrect with regard to Echo too as confirmed in teardowns:
"There are plenty of teardown videos on YouTube. Basically it is a physical analog connection that cuts off circuit flow to the mic."
Very interesting, I haven't read on that. If that's true, then bravo to Google and Amazon.

I feel like what's more important is security while the mic is turned on.

I definitely feel more safe with Apple's methods of encryption.
