  • Fraudsters target Apple Pay in credit card scams

As always the weakest link in security is between the ears of the idiots who gladly hand over their credentials to anyone who calls them with an offer too good to be true. And there’s no patch for stupid.
These automated scams are getting really sophisticated though. Here is one that ALMOST got me.

Caller ID displayed the name and phone number of my actual bank (which I googled).

    Automated message in perfect English:
"We recently got a purchase request which we blocked the transaction. If you made this purchase, please press 1. If you didn't make this purchase press 2."

Then when you hit a number (which I selected #2):
"Thank you, please enter you ATM card number for verification"

It keep repeating the message to enter the card number. This is where I was like wait a minute and hung up. The automated call kept calling back every minute for the next hour.

I called my bank to make sure there weren't any transactions attempts and they said no, so I notified them of the scam.

A week later, I get another call from a different bank (which I don't have) called me and had the same message (I let it go to voice mail).

  • CVS Apple Pay rollout in US complete after long struggle with CurrentC

    sergioz said:
CVS wanted to have their own monopoly on payments. I knew they were going to fail. All it takes is a small update on a payment terminal, they could have enabled it long time ago!

Actually when stores switched over to the new credit card readers, Apple Pay was working at CVS for a time (Target and Home Depot too...I know because I used it at all three), but they choose to shut that feature off.

  • Apple's AirPower mat inches closer to release, again said to arrive in March

    gatorguy said:
FWIW excellent Qi-compatible charging mats are available now for under $40, even much less than that  at under $20 if you're OK with a well-reviewed Chinese branded one, and will still be usable in another spot after you buy your new Apple AirPower.
Yeah, there are plenty of 3rd party Qi chargers, but most will not work with the Apple Watch because the Watch has some proprietary charging specifications.

Agree about the ”perfect” English. Also, was it a message or a phone call? The story seems to go in two directions here.
Boy, you all are nitpicky. Trying to give a headup on a more sophisticated scam. I hope that helps someone.

It was a robocall, so I wasn't talking to a real person. Since I wasn't talking to a real person, I used the word message to convey what was being said. It seemed pretty legitimate except for when kept repeating to enter my card number. Maybe if they spaced out the timing like every 10 seconds, it would get more people.

  • Hands on with the new iOS 15 CarPlay features

Fine and well, but how does one update CarPlay in the car?
You shouldn’t need to do anything with your car. CarPlay is updated in iOS.

That’s not to say there are not bug fixes to head units or car infotainment units. For that you have to go to that company’s support site. Rarely an update is needed to be compatible with the new iOS.

  • Forty years of the Mac, the computer for the rest of us

I still to this day don’t have a fond view on Mac beginnings. It fractured Apple and killed off the Apple II line. That was “the computer for the rest of us”. The II line had a big install base in schools and homes and Apple wanted people to start over? That probably helped out the PC market. I’m even going to dare and say the IIGS was more powerful than the Mac at the time.

  • Man who drove off a cliff is saved by iPhone 14

And what they didn’t tell you is Apple Maps directed him to drive off the cliff……I kid…I kid….

but Apple Maps this weekend did have me drive on a dirt road that just dead ended. I had to drive backwards about 1000ft. The couple that eventually drove up behind me (and I waved them to drive backwards) said that maps guided them that way as well.

I hope "perfect English" was sarcastic.

Okay, how about non-robotic sounding and no accent?

  • The Netflix crackdown on password sharing in the US has arrived

When 4K contents become more the norm, then one can claim 4k as the standard.  But right now, HD is still the standard.
    Um….okay….but Netflix’s standard isn’t even HD. It’s DVD quality 480p.

You have to pay extra for HD or pay even more 4K.

Just allow one price for all possible resolutions of the content.
