  • Google suspends Huawei's Android license, forces switch to open-source version

    A wonderful thread, so far.

But it just wait until the Huawei trolls start to show up... (and they will — it’s still very early morning there).

  • Apple shutting down Sign in with Apple support for Epic Games accounts

Apple is stealing money from their users.
If you signed up through Apple, then bought V-Bucks through the App Store, and never created a full Epic account for use with other devices. You're screwed. Apple disabling Sign in With Apple leaves these users with nothing.
This is incredibly screwed up for Apple to do this, and completely sours me on the service knowing that if Mozilla gets their developer certification cancelled for whatever reason, my Firefox account is gone along with my Pocket account.
What a boneheaded move from Apple, this move only harms the users of the app, not Epic.

  • For the first time, Linux gamers outnumber Mac in Steam's game census

As much as I enjoy my Mac for desktop usage with how fast and quiet it is, it just isn’t good for gaming. About 1/4th of my total steam library is available on MacOS, less than my Steam Deck with Proton. Some games I can’t play because they’re 32 bit. The only real thing I played on it was World of Warcraft, but my PC handles it much better and I can play my entire library on it, so I do.
Apple needs to learn that their token features every WWDC about some big game that’s 4 years old finally coming to Mac “later this year” isn’t enough for developers to care.

  • Microsoft says loosened App Store gaming rules still make for a 'bad experience'

    genovelle said:
At the end of the day why let them on the App Store for free while using apples tools to function but not pay Apple their share. They should make it web app based and the problem would be no more.
That is what the developer fee is for. Every developer pays Apple "their share". This functions exactly as Netflix does in terms of paying Apple "their share". A launcher is downloaded from the App Store, Netflix or xCloud. That's it.
Do you cry that Netflix doesn't pay Apple "their share" anymore now that Netflix doesn't allow subscriptions through the App Store? Will you demand that Apple kick Netflix out of the App Store now?

  • Microsoft says loosened App Store gaming rules still make for a 'bad experience'

On day one of loosened rules the complaints from the companies that don't get the full control that they want are rolling in.

Microsoft already controls the entire user experience on XBOX. Why do you think Microsoft should get complete control over someone else's operating system? How is that fair?
I refuse to believe you two are this clueless. Do you two believe that Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, and Pandora have "complete" and "full control" over iOS? Are you two trying to compete on how utterly ignorant you can be in your comments? Or is your hatred of any company that is not Apple completely blinding you?

These apps are simply that, apps. Microsoft isn't asking for an xCloud app screen between the widgets view and the first home screen. They're not asking for a control center toggle to launch xCloud baked into iOS 14. They're asking to be able to put one app into the store, that allows you to stream Halo, Gears of War, and other games without downloading an app for every game. How do you get that Microsoft and Google demand "full control" when they want to put xCloud and Stadia into the App Store without 4038934893 different apps for each game?

These apps aren't even doing anything special, they don't require deep iOS integration to work. They render a video, and have inputs for users. Netflix, but with more options than just fast forward and play/pause. Did you two scream and cry about Netflix when it came to the App Store? No, you didn't, because Netflix wasn't constantly being crapped on by Apple.

  • Apple tiptoes onto Threads -- but hasn't fully embraced it yet

I do not have a F*c*book account, and I will not have a F*c*book account.

Apple should look at Mastodon or Spoutible instead of that horrible company.
    You advertise where people are.
Fediverse does not have enough people to jump on it instead of something pushed by Meta that easily connects to your Instagram account with one easily accessible app.
Look a the ease of use for finding people on Threads, you just need to know their @, while on the Fediverse you need to know which instance someone is on and hope your instance federates with theirs, or make a new account on that instance.
So your ability to advertise on the Fediverse is impossible without making thirty thousand accounts across the various instances that have popped up. Good luck trying to create a cohesive brand strategy and presence on that.

  • Bing's ChatGPT experiment is deeply flawed, and is the future of search

It's going to revolutionize how we interact with search. I fed it a simple program I made in Python and asked for it to condense it. It threw me a program a few lines shorter, and had comments for each line it changed.

Because I had parameters for "Desktop" and the like it had a suggestion to change it to mobile. I clicked on it and the same program came up, except it replaced "Desktop" with "Mobile" and I noticed the URL parameters in my program had some more data. I asked it to explain what it changed and it told me that the site should recognize the requests I send as coming from a mobile device, and that the text file could be renamed back to the desktop variant if I didn't already have a mobile variant created.

I then asked it to find what Microsoft plans offered a specific feature as Microsoft is always changing terminology and shifting stuff around. The change I wanted was made in the last two months or so and it brought it up with no problems.

This isn't a replacement for search where you can go "oh, I can trust everything it says!". It's a new tool to be used. You have to use the same diligence you used when searching before. Trust, but verify.

  • Microsoft & Activision Blizzard merger is a go with conditions, says EU regulators

Microsoft, please complete the deal, please….

What a waste Microsoft just pissed $69 billion dollars down the drain, exceeding, Google, and HP in one shot, this waste of money means don’t expect any significant hardware development for Microsoft in the future.

    The Microsoft boneyard gets bigger

    * The big Acquisition losers of Microsoft Over the years…..

    Web TV $425 million dollars.
    Hotmail. $500 million dollars.
    Vizio $1.4 billion dollars.
    Titus communication $1 billion dollars.
    Navison $1.4 billion dollars.
*aQuantive $6.4 billion dollars wrote off in 2012 i.e. (a completewrite off shortly after acquiring)
    *Skype Technologies $8.5 billion dollars.
    *Yammer $1.2 billion dollars.
    *Nokia $7.2 billion dollars.
    *LinkedIn $26.5 billion dollars
    *Git hub $7.2 billion dollars.
    *ZeniMax Media 8.1 billion dollars.
*Nuance Communications to $20 billion dollars.
****Activision $69 billion dollars (Biggest in Microsoft history)****

Note, most were software acquisitions, which upon completion, most of the value of the software company dissipates rapidly, similar to Twitter, as an example.

Most of Microsoft acquisitions were complete right offs in the end. You certainly did not see most of the so-call tech implemented into their finished software i.e., their desktop OS or their web services division software in any meaningful way that justified the inflated prices that they paid for these boondoggles.

In contrast, Apples largest merger in the last 25 years was only $3 billion dollars, Apples best acquisition cost $400 million but it came with the best CEO in the last 25 years, and three other acquisitions, PA Semi, Intrinsity, and Anobit critical to Apple’s, Arm SOC’s development, cost Apple a total of 1.1 billion dollars.
Hotmail into Outlook is a loser?
Vizio is still used today, how is that a loser?
Skype became Lync which was used for Teams, one of the largest collaboration apps, but somehow that's a loss?
Yammer is used as an "internal Facebook" for companies, how is that a loser?
Nokia got them patents and an in on hardware
    LinkedIn is doing quite well
    Same with GitHub
You say people don't see these implementations in desktop Windows, but you don't see how this stuff is implemented internally or through business software.

  • Apple hikes Apple One cost by up to $5 as most services prices rise

iCloud storage can KMA: a Genius Bar agent reset my phone and after that it lost everything despite the fact that I was paying 2.99/mo for 50gb. Since then I switched to the 99¢ version because imho it’s just not worth it. Also a network reset recommended by AT&T deleted all of my WiFi signins last week and they haven’t been recovered and restored. I think that as a natural order of business, iPhones should unlock themselves from the carrier exclusivities automatically after 6 months has passed.
The price has always been $.99 for 50GB. What were you paying $2.99 for because that wasn't iCloud. And yes, a network reset resets all your network settings. Your Wi-Fi passwords won't return. You have to enter them again.

To restore a phone through iCloud you need to have backed up the phone to iCloud.
