  • Apple confirms new MacBook Pro models have only slower UHS-II SD card slots

I'm not aware of a major camera maker that has adopted UHS III (there are licensing reasons, apparently). At this point, it appears to be used by a very small sub-set of users. I'm a photographer and shoot with Leica SL2 and Nikon D850 cameras.... and neither manufacturer has adopted UHS III so far.

To a certain extent, it would have 'future-proofed' the slot, but for how many people exactly? The transfer speeds for my RAW files - from either camera - are currently acceptable to me using an external card reader, so I'm glad it'll be one less thing I have to carry around and plug in to my laptop - when it gets delivered.

  • Apple unveils macOS Monterey at WWDC 2021

"Certain macOS Monterey features are directly related to hardware."

Anyone else a little pi**ed that there wasn't even a hint of hardware to take full advantage of this amazing new OS?

You'd be forgiven if you believed there are no indications of pro-level machines coming anytime soon based on that keynote, despite all the bluster and rumours coming from the tech press (Bloomberg, Kuo, et al). I can't be the only professional user who's been waiting for more than 2 years for a laptop - or desktop - that can offer at least 4 TB of storage and a decent amount of RAM. Is Apple not bothered about professional users - again?!

Damn. I'm sure all the bells and whistles of the new OS are great and all, but really? Nothing? not even a dropped hint? After 2 years?

  • Stolen Quanta documents show MacBook Pro with SD card slot, MagSafe

"An SD slot is pointless unless you use a camera with one; most people use their phones to take photographs. Many cameras have wireless connectivity anyway."

So much to unpack here. First most photographers will use a laptop if they need a computer and therefore an SD slot is ideal; Most cameras - high end and low - use SD cards; Most photographers do not use their phones as their primary camera. Period.

Wireless connectivity on cameras is almost certainly too slow, when the raw files might be 55-65 MB. One of my last shoots - in Budapest, Hungary - I shot some 1,300 raw images. Wireless connectivity can't handle that.

Finally, photographers are a considerable segment of the Mac-buying public and a segment that tends to buy higher-end Mac options.

    Thanks.

I agree 100% with Apple blocking Facebook tracking.

Well, of course Apple isn't 'blocking Facebook'.... it's giving USERS a choice of whether THEY want to be tracked across the web or not. In other words, it'll be users that will choose to block Facebook.

Personally, I abandoned Facebook back in '08 after reading some early reports of how much information they gathered.... and even then, I felt uncomfortable about it. It reminded me of Special Branch* wiretapping my phone to find out what I was up to back in the late 70's [being the socialist subversive I was back then].

    *Brits will know the reference.
