  • iPhone 17 Slim model is barely thick enough for its own buttons

I'd be super happy with an iPhone 17 Fat. Imagine, with an extra 3-4mm you could lose the camera bump, and you could have a battery 4x what it is now. But Apple would never do that, because whilst their thinness obsession does seem to have receded somewhat, they'd never make something thicker just for more battery.

  • Apple's homeOS platform is coming: All the rumors, and what you need to know

I wonder if it will be smart enough to access the various iCloud-linked data like calendars, reminders and iMessage without the owner's iPhone connected to the network. At the moment, HomePods complain that they can't access the iPhone. There is no reason HomePod and Apple Watch Siri can't forward requests to ChatGPT either, rather than "i found some results on the web" for anything but the most basic queries.

HomeKit needs more power as well - Home Assistant has the power but usability is poor. The automations in HomeKit are too basic; I have lights that are on low at night and when activity is detected they raise to be brighter. But there is no option to return to previous brightness/scene, they can either stay on at max, or turn off. You can sort of do it with shortcuts, but its a faff.

  • Apple may revive battery case accessory for iPhone 17 Air

So make a really thin phone, make it thicker than a standard one by adding a fat case, but still have less battery than the standard thickness phone??? Why?!

  • iPhone 17 Air rumored to shrink battery & lean on iOS 26 to keep up

Who keeps asking Apple for an even thinner iPhone with worse battery life? I’ve never met anyone with those requirements.
Even thinner? They’ve been getting thicker with basically every new release for the past 11 years, and this is what keeps me from upgrading until I absolutely have to. Nobody wishes for worse battery life, of course, but I would love it if they could make something with the same thickness (6.9mm), weight (129g) and battery life as the iPhone 6 from 2014 (or in that ballpark) but with more modern specs. And maybe they should devote more resources to developing really great battery cases for people who don’t mind the bulk but need more battery life.
On behalf of all of those who want a phone to be functional and useful for a longer period of time versus being 2mm thinner, how is 2mm thinner with 25% less battery life an acceptable tradeoff to you?

  • Apple's iPhone water resistance has a big catch, claims new lawsuit

A friend dropped his iPhone 12 in a mop bucket and he immediately took it out but it was too late. It sucks but what can one do 🤷🏻‍♂️
My iPhone 12 Mini came out of the pocket on my SUP’s seat and went into the sea. About an hour later the tide went out and a crab fisher found it. I got it back and it’s been fine ever since.

It’s funny how something can work for some but not for someone else. But that’s electronics
Sometimes there are manufacturing defects. Those defects could cause a phone to be susceptible to water ingress when used in accordance with Apple's advertising. These defects are what the warranty is legally supposed to protect against - so that in case if something really does "work for some but not for someone else", Apple is obliged to rectify the problem.
No, the standard only shows water resistance. It is up to the consumer to show that there was a defect.
Actually it’s dust and water resistance, to which Apple advertises compliance. As I have said ad nauseam, Apple advertising IP67 then effectively saying “don’t quote us on that” is false advertising. The defect can be proven with water ingress. Easy.

That's a security measure rather than a 'not smart enough' thing. The HomePod's ability to use voice recognition to identify the user is pretty good, but requiring your iPhone to be connected to the same network makes it far less likely that someone without authorization could use your HomePod to access your personal data and communications while you're out of the house.
If it's about security, why does it not use my phone's most recent location as long as it was updated at most a few minutes ago? Security may be a desirable (or not) side effect, but it's definitely not the primary reason it doesn't work. In fact, I'd wager that it would work just fine if my phone was connected over a VPN to the home network, giving a false sense of security.

  • Apple axes Wi-Fi router division, apparently signaling the end of AirPort

So how long until AirPlay to AEBSs will be axed? Are Macs next? About time both Cook and Ive are shown the door IMO. All my Apple routers are infinitely more reliable than anything from other companies - unless you pay hundreds for commercial gear.

  • Pundits believe Apple's Jony Ive no longer involved in iPhone, Mac product design [u]

He's obviously still involved in the latest Apple designs, else they wouldn't be pandering to Ive's OCD in striving for even more thinness over function.
