Apple TV+ promotion tours 'For All Mankind's' lunar base
Oscilloscopes are useful for debugging tiny computers now. Any computer found in a remote research base in that era lmight be like a semi portable computer of 1975, before the Apple ][ or Commodore 64. An oscilloscope would be a likely tool found for debugging such a thing or checking control output. A directional antenna which must track a moving object might be steered by such a computer and debugged using an oscilloscope. Logic Analyzers of the day were not common tools of electrical engineers like oscilloscopes were. -
FCC re-examining iPhone RF levels after controversial report
maestro64 said:I said this before when this topic keeps coming up. Before you freak out about radio waves from phone, keep in mind every day just walking outside your are bombarded with radio waves from DC to light and you are hit with all levels of intensity. Just living every day you are at risk of being hit with radiation. There are lots of sources of radiation which will not go away.Keep in mind the inverse-square affect on signal intensity. The article had that correct. A 100watt transmitter 100 feet away will have no where near the affect on the body as a 1 watt transmitter at 1 foot. And the article was talking about millimeters for their test cases. It is completely unlikely that a non-radio-professional will ever find themselves bathed by as much RF energy, as they will with a hand-held transceiver, unless you lay your head down on top of your MIMO WiFi base station. Don't do that. Looking down the throat of a police radar gun at point blank range is another thing not to do. If you have a 2-way radio transceiver (CB, ham, fire, etc.) with external antenna, don't make adjustments to the 2-way radio's antenna itself while transmitting from the radio. That's also a no-no.

New Apple TV 4K with A15, HDR10+, more storage debuts

Ethernet scores over WIFI if only because when I change WiFI routers/access-point locations/distribution strategies (for creating a firewall between my home gear and my work gear most recently), the Ethernet connected devices don't care. The only reason I want WiFi in the house is for smartphones, tablets, laptops. But VOIP phones, home computers, connected cameras, printers, electronic/embedded projects, TVs and set-top boxes can all be Ethernet connected. I like it that way. DHCP and having the routers know the IP addresses of every wired device is most excellent. Even changing Ethernet equipment doesn't lose the Ethernet access for each wired device.
Getting rid of Ethernet in the set top box is a mistake from my perspective. The good news is that I already have the one 4K AppleTV I need for now and it doesn't appear that they added any feature I was looking for so I will put off buying at this time. I could imagine adding a 4K AppleTV elsewhere in the house and that will give me pause. Right now my portable/bedroom/office Apple TV is a 1K unit.

Apple TV+ 'Dickinson' not shying away from sex in NYC premiere
"It's also clear that the show won't be shying away from the belief among most historians that Dickinson had a long-running same-sex romantic relationship with her sister-in-law, Susan Gilbert. "
Most historians? MOST?? I suggest "some" or "historians who are interested in Dickinson" or something that qualifies this... Is that contemporary English speaking historians? Perhaps even naming the historians would be nice. -
First look: Hands-on with Apple's iPhone X
I have a 6 now. 3 years old and GPS receiver not working anymore. Already had battery replaced. All in all it lasted better than the 5 did.
I wish the 8 had the good camera. I would pay a premium for the good camera. But I really don't like the plus size device. And now Apple has made the X which has the fancy camera in the same size device as my 6. a $400ish premium, but it comes with a ton of other neat stuff. Hmm. Probably. 256GB? Nice. -
Compare the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro Max versus the size of other iPhones with this pri...
jeff fields said:tadd said:AppleInsider said:There are a lot of possible screen sizes for the iPhone. AppleInsider shows you exactly the size of the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max -- and how they compare to other recent models. You've had this conversation, we've had this conversation: the iPhone SE is tiny and it's a shame there's no longer any iPhone that small. Except if you actually compare the iPhone SE with, say, the iPhone 8 or even the new iPhone 11, then the difference is startling. For all that the newer models have bigger screens, their cases aren't truly that much bigger than that of the iPhone SE.
Um... 29% wider is truly that much bigger
iPhone SE is 4.87" x 2.31"
That's the same as an iPhone 5
The iPhone 8 is 5.45" x 2.65"
That's 0.34" wider.
The iPhone XR is 5.94" x 2.98". Now it's .67" wider than the iPhone SE
The iPhone 11 is 5.94" x 2.98". Same as the iPhone XR.
So let's see. 2.31" + 29% = (2.31" x 1.29) = 2.98"Dunno. I never had an SE. I went from a 5 to a 7 and the difference was tragic for me. Going from the 7 to the X wasn't as important [to me]. I'm still wistful about the size of the 5.I'm not really professionally comparing phones.. I just thought it was odd that the article was making as if the phones aren't truly that much bigger. It would be really cool if they offered form factors at all ends of the possible size spectrum. I understand why they don't. I'm really amazed that Apple makes so many sizes of iPad.

PC component manufacturer clones new Mac Pro case
ITGUYINSD said:Would someone who was seriously considering the new Mac Pro change their mind and purchase this case and DIY parts and build a Windows PC instead? No.
How is this hurting Apple?
This has been going on since the beginning of the industrial revolution, or before if you count counterfeit art and whatnot. This is "bad". People who knowingly support the theft of intellectual property (IP) are hurting the leading edge designer, and the market for leading edge designs. If IP was not property, and designs could just be stolen whenever, then people won't spend money taking the risks to release new designs. It's all about capitalism. We get nice things because it pays to invent nice things. Without property and rights, capitalism falls apart. -

Apple Watch Series 9 vs Apple Watch Ultra 2 -- Specs, price, and features, compared
charlesn said:tadd said:Does that cover it?
I think you are telling me that the Ultra is a better deal than the SS Series 9, which is where I was heading with my comment/question.
Night mode also sounds good. I only recently saw that in a Youtube review after I posted my 'summary'.
So, slightly larger display, more pixels, brighter display, fully adjustable brightness for night mode, action button, 2x battery. Wayfinder, Modular Ultra, and a really nice watch band.
I'm convinced. I have an SS Series 4 cellular watch with the "graphite" milanese band, right now. After 5 years the watch can no longer be charged just during shower and breakfast to last the entire day. Now I leave my SS Series 4 on the charger overnight. So.. I'm pondering replacing it. I like the idea of starting with a battery 2x as big as the SS Series 9.
I figure that I got 1800 days out of my SS Series 4, for around $850. So 45 cents a day -- the cellular connection cost was $10 to $20/month over the life of the watch. That's more than the watch cost.
It sounds like the Ultra costs only $50 more than the SS Series 9 which I would have gotten if the Ultra didn't exist.
I don't suppose the Milanese band would work on (or is available for) the Ultra 2? I really like it (the Milanese band).
