Don't think I have this problem, but the vague terms "Stage lighting effect" doesn't really tell me what I'm looking for.

  • Apple, Google team on 'contact tracing' smartphone software to combat spread of COVID-19

Sheesh, that didn't take long. Can't we all just drop the cynicism for just ONE day and appreciate that these two are working together for the common good? I mean, damn!

  • Apple Silicon M1 Macs do not support eGPUs

    mazda 3s said:
Maybe it was just an embarrassment to Apple to support external GPUs that had slower speeds than their internal one.
Well one of the main concerns was for most MacBooks, anything close to high end AMD GPUs wasn’t an option, we’ll just have to see how these perform to see if an eGPU option is really necessary (again, most pro users would save the eGPUs for the MacBook Pro or iMac or something that’s not today’s introduced Macs, so it’s a low bar).
Given the (limited) data that we have now for performance, the integrated GPU in Apple Silicon with eight GPU cores is about the same as a RX 590.
Huh? Apple said the onboard GPU in M1 is good for 2.6 TFLOPs. Intel Iris Xe in Tiger Lake is 2.1 TFLOPs. Radeon RX 590 is 7.1 TFLOPs
Apple likes to make this simple, to our detriment sometimes. TFLOP is a weird measure, and you need to be sure that you're comparing like with like half, single, double-precision, and we have no idea what that was based on.

The 590 comparison is derived from other measures that they've used like "three times faster" and the like for other machines. We'll all see together.
The 3x measurement is derived from the previous Intel IGPs used in their Macs. It really has nothing to do with the Radeon RX 590 AFAICT. None of the machines announced today -- 13-inch MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini -- have used discrete Radeon graphics. They've always used Intel's IGP, which is crap. So for Apple to claim that the GPU in M1 is 5x faster or 6x faster only shows how crap Intel's integrated graphics PREVIOUSLY was. It's a bit faster than the 12th generation Iris Xe found in Tiger Lake, which seems like a fair mark, but nothing earth shattering.

And Apple's 2.6 TFLOP figure is FP32, just liked the other quoted figures. A Radeon Vega 8 in a Ryzen 4800U APU is around 1.8 TFLOPs.

  • Equifax to pay $700 million for breach of 140 million Americans' data

WTF kinda of "settlement" is this? They get hit with $700 million for far more dangerous and life-impacting activities than Facebook's $5 billion fine. You voluntarily sign up for Facebook -- your credit history, SSN, etc. are mandatory requirements.

  • Amazon glitch removes Apple Card as payment method [u]

Considering that you only earn 1% with purchases at Amazon using your Apple Card, why would you even bother? I use my Apple Card only with Apple Pay... I've never even physically used the actual card or CC number in the over year I've had it. And for Amazon purchases, I use the my Amazon card for 5% back.

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 7 glass screen more easily damaged than any iPhone

I've come to the realization that I can't keep my devices perfectly free from damage since I prefer to keep my iPhone 6s "naked" as I loathe cases. Phone cases are like those ugly-ass black leather/vinyl "bras" that people used to put on the front of their cars back in the 80s and 90s IMHO, but that's another story...

I've had my iPhone 6s for roughly a year with minimal scratches on the display (mainly just light scratches from possibly rubbing up against something), but nothing that I can feel with my fingers. And definitely nothing that I can notice with the screen on.

I'm just getting to the point where I say "sh*t happens" and move on. As long as you aren't out purposefully trying to scratch your smartphone, you should be fine no matter if you have an iPhone, a Galaxy, or god forbid a Lumia   :D

  • Apple's AirPower charging mat may not be cancelled after all

So those of is with the Milanese Loop, it looks as though we'll have to disconnect one end of the loop connector from the Apple Watch body each time we charge up with AirPower. Kind of annoying, but it is what it is.

My MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and even my Apple Watch Series 7 power cord use USB-C. It's about damn time that the iPhone got onboard.

  • Editorial: Apple note sends media pundits into a fit of histrionic gibberish

I must admit, I usually am not a fan of DED’s hit pieces AT ALL, but this was actually well reasoned and on point.

Most of of the time, his stuff reads like the geeky kid trying to win the affections of the pretty girl in high school by kissing her ass 24-7.
    Classy

Heh, I think there’s a nugget of truth to it. DED rarely offers a critical eye of Apple (he leaves that to the other writers on the site). Even Gruber can get critical at times. DED just looks to fight tooth and nail with someone, anyone (or company) all the time that offers the hint of criticism or poses a potential threat to Apple.

The “hero” act is just a bit played out, that’s all I’m saying.
