  • Apple could be out $20 billion a year if Google loses DOJ antitrust case

    cincytee said:
The immediate effect might be the loss of $20 billion in payments to Apple, but Apple would clearly then institute its own search engine, which would generate billions in revenue, much like Google, so the overall impact would be much smaller financially and also put Apple in charge of its own search revenues. The question then would be whether that in itself would raise regulatory scrutiny.
Given the state of Siri compared to Alexa or the Google Assistant, I wouldn’t count on it.

If authentic, these documents show something very important - a return to function over form in the MacBook line.
Sort of. Three IO ports instead of four sounds less functional to me.
Uhhh, three Thunderbolt, HDMI, SD and a dedicated power plug. How the hell is that LESS functional?

  • USB-C on iPhone is good - but not as an excuse for a bad law

    This is a disappointing article.

Let’s just start with the simple truth: a tech behemoth is STILL using an ancient standard they once invented that is slow and forces us to deal with many cables, and refuses to change.

Even this behemoth is using both standards throughout their own product portfolio for several years now. It’s highly inconsistent. Their new AirPods Pro still have the lighting cable. Their iPads: USB-C. Why? Why??? The argument of “more e-waste short-term” is a moot point since it’s already the case today - Apple designed it.

Secondly, there is nothing that prohibits the EU from amending their own laws with the acceptance of a future standard, granted they actually ARE a new standard (not another propriety AppleConnector 2.0 or SamsungSpeedyCable).

EU was very slow with this law - it took years and years. Apple had even more time to prepare for the inevitable seeing this law being drafted. If they were truly innovative in this respect, they would have abandoned Lightning years ago for a true standard. Instead their arrogance and priority to keep a profitable business around cables alive kept them on this course (sustainable company my ass - that’s just marketing).

And what about this pretentious introduction in respect to the EU. The author has clearly no understanding because it dramatizes this topic so much that it apparently needs to emphasize the EU is “political bureaucracy”. It’s so juvenile.
The author was in the EU for a while, so I'm pretty sure he has a good idea how it works.
There are people that have lived in the United States their whole life and have no idea how government works. So that’s not exactly a credible “comeback”

  • Redesigned colored MacBook Air shown off in new renders

Not a fan of the white keyboard. Looks pristine when new but will quickly get grubby with constant use. That and that alone would stop me buying it.
I use a Bluetooth Apple Magic Keyboard with my MacBook Air when docked, and it has yet to get "grubby" with constant use. As for the color schemes shown above:

  • Samsung's $700 Smart Monitor M8 borrows Apple's multi-colored iMac style

THIS is what I wanted from Apple's consumer monitor. Really the only thing it needs is a higher PD capability considering the MBP pull close to 100W at load.
Not me. UHD resolution (3840x2160 or there snouts because of 16:9 screen), poor ppi resolution, as you say poor brightness, HDMI input? Why? Smart functions so a TV instead of a monitor. Probably cheap plastic shell without glass screen. This is yet another cheap 4K TV you’ll need to update through Samsung. No thanks.
I don’t get the cheap plastic shell/glass complaints. It’s a monitor! It sits on your desk and that’s it. You don’t touch it (usually). I have a 32” Dell curved monitor on my desk. I’ve touched it maybe twice in a year. Once when I was setting it up, and again when I mounted my Logitech webcam on top. Haven’t touched it again since. It plugs into my CalDigit TS3+ dock, which plugs into my 14” MacBook Pro for desk duty.

Now, I can understand being obsessed with touch points on something like a laptop, phone or tablet. But a monitor?? Pfffffffffffffff.

How about adding M1 support for their webcams?

  • Intel is now making 'Mac versus PC' ads with Justin Long

I will concede on the multi-monitor support though, which they point out in one of the ads. With that being said:

The MacBook Air (M1) doesn't have a touch bar, and they are showing what looks to be a 15-inch MacBook Pro -- without a Touch Bar????

These idiotic "brand wars" are just about as pathetic as Ford vs GM vs Ram pickups or Pepsi vs Coke. It all comes down to choice. Anyone that suggests what you just did is either a troll or a poor excuse for a human being.

  • Munster: 4" iPhone doesn't make sense for rumored Apple event in March

Gruber said the same thing about the iPad Pro at the iPhone 6s event... we see how that turned out.
  • Apple limits 2016 MacBook Pro models to 16GB of RAM to maximize battery life

Actually, the company at fault here isn't Apple, but Intel. Skylake doesn't support the needed LPDDR4 that would allow them to go to higher capacities. And Kaby Lake will only have support in the U chips, and U chips aren't mobile quad cores, so the 15" won't be able to get the upgrade even when they do go to KBL.

In short, Intel continues to drop the ball. It's hard to imagine Apple isn't getting tired of this kind of crap.
