  • McDonald's in Chicago is the latest Apple Store copycat - but not the first by far

    1. This is a modernist aesthetic that exposes structural elements, something referred to as structural honesty. Apple does not employee this type of aesthetic.
    2. All glass systems were around decades before Apple started using them. This particular McDonald's uses a structural mullion system for the glass, something Apple has not done for a long time since they first went to a structural glass system in New York City at the Cube.
    3. No one would mistake this interior for Apple.
It is quite a stretch to say that this McDonald's is copying their aesthetic of Apple Stores.

  • Epic Games vs Apple -- the whole story

The reason Epic can make so much money, is that Apple, Google, Microsoft and Sony have put a lot of R&D and marketing into iOS, Android, Xbox and Playstation. If Epic wants to sell direct to the consumer, they should make their own hardware. They want to leech off Apple and Google, but are willing to pay 30% to Microsoft and Sony (for now).

The shoplifting analogy that Apple uses isn't very good. It is more like Epic setting up shop and selling things inside an Apple Store without paying any rent; Epic cries in the store that they made the products they are selling not Apple, so Apple should let them stay there for free.

  • Samsung apes Safari's most derided iOS 15 feature

I also like the bar at the bottom. Especially with how big phone screens are now.

  • Editorial: China's retaliatory 'unreliable supplier' list will hit Windows, Android the ha...

If Chinese companies produce IP infringing chips or software, it would only be for the domestic market and emerging markets with weak IP protections. Those products would certainly be litigated and blocked in Europe, Japan and South Korea. The resulting bifurcation of the market would take a different path than what you describe in this piece. However, the conclusion that China does not have a strong interest or incentive to punish Apple is very true.

  • Mazda adds touchscreen support to CarPlay in 2024 CX-5

I have a 2017 Mazda MX-5 and it has CarPlay with a touch screen. I had to pay Mazda to install CarPlay when it became available in 2018 or 2019. Mazda disables the touch screen when you are moving. If they are embracing touchscreen functionality, I hope I can get an infotainment update so I can use the touchscreen while moving!

  • WhatsApp latest to pile on Apple over Child Safety tools

There are some concerns to work out, but I applaud Apple for doing something to combat child sexual abuse materials. It’s only going to roll out in the US at first, use hashes from reputed sources, and requires multiple hash matches before being reported. The people and groups attacking Apple but haven’t done anything themselves to protect children or offer alternative measures. If you aren’t part of the solution, you are part of the problem, WhatsApp, EFF, and Epic.
