  • Cellebrite says it can pull data from any iOS device ever made

I remember when Apple actually used Cellebrite devices in their retail stores to transfer data from customer’s old phones to new iPhones.

  • Retailers, payments association side with Australian banks over Apple Pay negotiations

These retailers and banks should build their own phone. Why should Apple be forced to open its technology just because others failed to make a compelling platform/device of their own that people want to use?

No one forces the software powering a microwave oven to be open for others to write on, nor is BMW forced to open its iDrive media console software software to others.

  • No, Apple did not switch to USB-C on its new MacBook Pros to profit from dongle & adapter sales

I realize that it's the ‘in thing’ to jab at Apple’s “courage” comment these days but there is truth to it too.

When a manufacturer is too scared at potentially alienating customers in the short term, you end up mired in legacy—parallel ports, PS/2 ports, VGA, compact flash, etc. You also end up with software like Windows XP, that people just won't let go of and yet at the same time is a nightmare to continually support and patch.

When you coddle a customer by making it painless to stick with older things, they transition much more slowly. When you throw in dongles for free or keep old ports around, you make incentive to press forward less motivating.

Apple would prefer that, where possible, people go for wireless options like wireless syncing instead of Lightning cables. And if you do have a scenario where you need an adapter, by making you pay for it, it gets you to consider newer, more modern options.

You may disagree, but I think this approach has genuinely helped Apple’s user base embrace new standards significantly faster than other ecosystems.

  • Apple FCC filing shows Apple TV-sized device with Bluetooth, NFC under review

4k finally? Had to skip the 4th generation because it was missing. It is kind of absurd situation, you can record 4k on iPhone, but can't watch it in full resolution.
Absurd? If you've been following Apple for any length of time, surely you'd see that they try to ship products when they're ready. Not when they're ready by your expectations but when enough is ready by Apple’s estimates.

It’s likely they're not considering just your ability to capture 4K but their ability to have content to sell or stream to customers in 4K and that may not be ready. It wouldn't be a particularly great launch of a new Apple TV that can display 4K content but Apple doesn't sell any 4K content.

  • Inside all the new HomeKit products coming out in 2020

Five and a half years after HomeKit was announced and still there’s no HomeKit compatible lock for mortise-style locks.

I don’t need any more HomeKit compatible plug adapters. What a slow slow rollout and adoption by third-parties.

  • Compared: Apple Studio Display vs Samsung Smart Monitor M8

I fell for all the positive paid reviews of the Samsung M8 on YouTube. After using it for a week, we ended up returning it as it was very disappointing.

While the Samsung M8 is chock full of interesting and potentially useful features, its display quality was extremely disappointing.

We initially went with the M8 because we wanted something larger than Apple’s 27" display. The Samsung M8 has poor viewing angles (it’s a VA type display and not IPS) and was also dim. The construction of the Samsung M8 is cheap. Nearly all of it is plastic and it felt flimsy. Since the Apple display is too small for our needs we went with a 34” ultrawide LG and it is a night and day difference in terms of image quality.

  • Apple's Ive and Newson unveil unadorned fir trees for Claridge's Christmas installation

Glad to see Jony expressing himself more publicly in other spaces outside of Apple.

Without his creative partner in tech, Steve—it's clear that Apple is not enough to fulfill his discipline anymore.
