  • 'Foreshadow' Intel processor attack bypasses protections for secure data held on chip

Time to move on from Intel.

A new ARM MacBook makes sense, it doesn’t need the x86-64 performance an MBP does and I’m pretty sure 3rd party software use is fairly minimal on these machines.  Emulating macOS/Windows x86 should be at Intel Y levels by now.  Maybe license AMD64 for the job.

I just wish they’d hurry up & show some point of difference rather than cost.
It bums me out when I see brand fans making statements like this. AMD wasn't immune to timing attacks. This whole area of security research at the chip level is novel. It's not like suddenly you move to ARM and then you're perfectly safe from unforeseen flaws in chip designs. You're gonna learn as you go as researchers get more and more clever at finding ways to attack them.

  • New MacBook Pro models limited to HDMI 2.0

I guess it was a missed opportunity. However, for presentations and the like, how much does 4K @120Hz matter? I am assuming that most projectors would currently max out at HD resolution.
It matters when you want to use the thunderbolt ports for thunderbolt things (of which there are only 3 ports) and the hdmi for a dedicated video connection to an ultrawide 5k display. Hdmi 2.0 @60hz is noticeably more choppy than 120hz where it’s buttery smooth by comparison. High end gaming monitors run at lower resolution to achieve 300hz refresh rates because judder, jank, screen tearing and choppy frames are infuriating to look through. I just use mine for office rat stuff, but 100-144hz 5k ultrawide screens are a big improvement over dual displays and the silky smooth rendering is something hard to get away from once you’ve used it

  • Apple engineers dish on no macOS for iPad & why 11-inch model didn't get mini-LED

So what i’m hearing is Apple is still ignoring consumer demand regarding an unhobbled iPad OS, and unhobbled macbook pro hardware. There is 0 justification for limiting the user facing cameras to the same resolution found on the very first iPhone. Video looks like hot garbage. “Facetime HD” is laughably bad. Do better. Also not a fan of seeing trails of red smear going across my “retina” display on a 2020 macbook pro. They’re telling us laptop users don’t demand better displays?

On one side the hardware is bad. On the other side the software is bad. Can’t win!

  • Compared: M1 vs M1 Pro and M1 Max

I have the m1 max 64 in a 16” model and iMovie doesn’t currently support video files so this is probably great for final cut pro x users ($300) but the rest of us are hosed until they fix that app.

  • Supposed next-gen Apple TV remote turns out to be third-party hardware

I would say “anything would be better than the current remote” but that gives them way too much leeway to prove me wrong once again. Why is apple so bad at peripherals?

  • Compared: 2021 New 16-inch MacBook Pro vs. 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro

My 2018 2.6 Ghz I7 MBPw/ 32 RAM is plenty "fast" for me. The only problem I have with it is that the fans are almost always on, if not blowing up an actual storm, even when Activity Monitor says it's more than 80% idle. Fan noise is a problem for me because I need to record clean audio right next to it, and I can't have fan noise in the recording. I suspect that the Window Server process is a big factor as it's almost always at the top of Activity monitor. Apple even had to replace the motherboard and battery after it got swollen from the heat (I presume), and yes I've always kept the fans & insides clean.

So here I am trying to justify spending $3-4k to have less fan noise, which seems crazy! I've heard that the M1 Mini's rarely turn on their fans, even under heavy load, so it seems likely that these new MBPs will be similar, but it's hard getting my head (and wallet) wrapped around the idea that I have to spend (realistically) $4k to fix Fan Noise. Fingers crossed that'll actually fix it!  (Yes, I could get a lesser version, but I typically try to future proof... and switching to a much cheaper MacMini is not an option for me unfortunately).

I guess this is kind of a rant. Sorry!
    Hello fellow consumer,

I recently had this very same issue. The fan noise is ever present with the intel macbook pros and it runs the fans at very low rpm (2k) until you get on a video conference call, or plug in a 4k monitor, or run on catalina, or try running audio software, and at that point the fans spin from 4k-6k which is significantly loud.

Having a studio quality mic array next to spinning fans makes them pointless. I also ran external mics to help solve the issue, but it was only mildly successful as the fan noise would still go bananas. Due to this, I recently purchased the cheapest m1 mini i could get until apple released THIS macbook pro update with real cpu/gpu combos that aren’t mobile phone quality. I will tell you, the m1 mac mini is dead quiet. Big sur is a beautiful upgrade as well.

I was also one of the persons clamoring for this announcement and my purchase was the M1 Max w/ 64gb of LPDDR5 ram, which by the way is bonkers in and of itself. Aren’t the intel macbook pros still using LPDDR4? Maybe I’m wrong on that part, but this device should just be an absolutely silent beast of a machine. I can’t wait for it to get here!

PS, I have a long standing gripe with Apple over their ugly black borders at the tops of screens, chins at the bottoms of imacs, and use of subpar cameras on all their desktop computers in the age of inexpensive 12 megapixel phone cameras, however I will grant them a hall pass on this one because everything else is so obviously fabulous I can’t possibly care about the very slight but still nice to have improvement to the bundled webcam

  • This is why Apple TV 4K Siri Remote scrubbing doesn't work on Disney+, other apps

This explains why disney’s app always glitches out on me but i never have an issue with the others. Not looking forward to hbo max glitches to come :(

  • Apple Watch Series 7 review roundup: the best, but not a compelling upgrade

I've been reading a lot of chastising of Apple (which is fine) for not improving the cpu, but really what the heck are people looking for in a watch cpu? Maybe I'm missing something, but my Apple Watch barely does anything and that kind of the point. All I want out of this thing is a long battery life and lots of health and fitness related sensors and a sprinkling in of wireless features like the unlock functions, message notifications, and the ability to play music while working out without a phone.

There's been significant noise about increased durability with the new design due to thicker glass/crystal, however as far as I've been able to tell from reading, I don't believe scratch resistance has changed or improved. Beyond all the weird fantasies people are having about video calls on your wrist, I would loudly applaud adding the sapphire screen to all models so upgrades don't cost nearly a grand every time you want a new scratch proof screen. If I'm buying 3-4 watches for family members, that price tag is unpalatable.

Also, is that a rainbow donkey with a bite out of its neck? I don’t play fortnite, so i have no idea what that’s supposed to be.

I hope something comes out of this case that gets apple to lower their cut of the profits. I don’t care how you justify it to yourselves; a 30% take on every sale is total bs. There’s nothing even remotely close to that on any other system. The only justification anyone has for that take is based on pure speculation. There in lies the problem, especially in the a la carte time of cloud services and low network transaction fee crypto currencies. Something has to give.
It’s not BS. Thirty percent is the industry standard. https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/10/07/report-steams-30-cut-is-actually-the-industry-standard
Industry standard? No. It’s the standard apple set and that iphone cloners followed. This isnt based on cost.
