  • Apple says hidden Safari setting led to flawed Consumer Reports MacBook Pro battery tests

Fixed???  I think not!  Let me share my experience that I went through:

    friday 11:25 (the 6th):
On Friday I got to the Apple Store at 11:30 with no appointment. I was sent there by AppleCare due to the extreme nature of my problem with my new laptop just 15 days old.  I walked in with a fully charged battery. 100% AND stopped an employee so I'd have a witness.

I went because three nights in a row I took my laptop, bought my other half dinner at 6:45 then stayed to work till he got off at 10pm.  So I worked from 7pm till 10. Three nights in a row my computer went from 100% to 1% by 10pm (actually 2 hours and 56 minutes to be exact).

The odd thing is on Monday night I got in line at 2:00pm for a movie premier. By 4:57pm after leaving the house 100% it was 1% and I barely was able to save my work to my iPhone. Then it shut down.

My first reaction?  "I swear this was 100%. Maybe I'm on acid and trippin' ". LOL

In all 4 situactions I did not have WIFI or electricity so those options were not turned on. I also tried "graphics switching on" for 2 of the days, then  "graphics switching off"  the other two days. No improvement and it didn't get worse either.

So now it's Friday morning and at the apple store ... as I mentioned above. AppleCare sent me with no appointment. They made me wait for over two hours. That's ok. In this case that was a GOOD thing. I started logging in my battery drain using my iPhone. Check this out. Here's my battery while I waited:
    11:35.  100%
    11:48.  92%
    12:01.  83%
    12:08.  79%
    12;27.  66%
    12:46   52%
    12:57.  46%
    1:11.    38%
    1:18.    33%
    1:27.    27%
    1:34.    21%
    1:44.   15%

WOW!  So here's the thing:  although we installed all our software on this Machine we only ran 2 apps and both were optimized for the touch bar model

    DJay 1.4.2
    iTunes 12.5.4

That's it. This was to make sure we weren't running non optimized software. (I'm a beta tester for Apple so I went in to "beta tester" mode.). By limiting what I was using it helped control the experiment. One thing to note: the ONLY reason I installed my beta account was because with the golden master it shipped with I had serious graphics issues. Obviously this machine was shipped without a human launching it because it happened right after launching. Everyone EXCEPT Stevie Wonder and Helen Keller could have seen it. I barely got the beta installed because of the problems but once installed I've not had one graphic issue since. Thars good news I guess?

So at the Apple Store while waiting the 2 hours I had iTunes open (files installed on computer no iCloud or internet) to see my playlists, but I was using DJay to test my crossfades on 350+ songs for an upcoming event.

I returned the unit through the online store the Genius Bar was not authorized to do anything except send it out for repairs r??  17 days old out for repair??

When i returned it not only did I leave EVERYTHING installed, and an authorization agreeing to them using it this way (I have nothing to hide)  I also sent the above letter and this statement:

"I'm including this info because if I was receiving this laptop I would want to know these things that were done and the particulars to help diagnose the battery issue.

    Screen dimmed to 12 clicks
    WIFI turned off and unavailable
Only two software titles running ever
    Pretty basic.

Hope this helps!  Call me if you need clarification"

now apple claims safari caused it. HELLO?  We never launched safari or mail or anything else only those two programs. So you can stop spreading the "all clear" signal Apple!

  • Intel launches new Kaby Lake chips suited for Apple's MacBook Pro, iMac

That will be awesome for Apple to roll out new models 4 months after I invested in their below average iteration of the MacBookPro.
You have through January 8th to return your MacBook Pro. Apple extended the "I don't want it" date to compensate for the graphics issue.

But just so so you know the graphics issue is fixed in the current beta were testing.

  • Head to head: Apple's Time Machine versus three local backup utilities for macOS

Too bad this article does not mention how well the products restore data. The true measure of a backup product is not how easy they are to use, it is how completely and correctly they restore data.

Also, there is no mention about how each manages incremental backups.

For total backups SuoerDuper is the best. Not only does it create an exact clone of your computer (OS/ software/ all users) it does it so well that even the $4,000 Adobe Suite does t know it's been moved!  We all know how easy Adobe likes to corrupt when it thinks it's being "moved".

And the best part once you do the "one click" backup you can install it on ALL your computers to bring them up to date and matched to one another.

Every time i buy buy a new computer I backup the old making a SuoerDuper clone (one click that's all). Then when the new computer arrives connect the external SuperDuper, hold down OPTION when starting the computer, select SuperDuper to start from, then launch SuoerDuper and copy it over. Instant computer copy ready to go

    hope that helps

  • California Assembly considers bill to mandate encryption backdoors

There's a quick way to stop this bill... Apple should announce the iPhone will not be sold in California Apple stores and available ONLY by the Internet. The phones will be sold from Arizona only!  That should piss off enough people to start protests from the public. Have giant banners made and slap them on those pretty glass doors at each store nice and big:

STARTTING JAN 2017 IPHONES WILL NOT BE SOLD IN CALIFORNIA - CONTACT YOUR ASSEMBY PERSON NOW!

Common sense is loosing to stupid in this case. So hit California where they can truly appreciate it ... In their wallet!

  • watchOS 3.1.1 update bricking some Apple Watches, users say

I have the Nike watch. No problems during the 5 betas and no problem here on the master either. My friend has the Series 1 (second gen) no problem with his 5 betas and now the GM either.

Both iphones went through all the betas and now the GM of iOS 10.2 as well.

    In case that helps. <GRIN>

  • Leaked Senate encryption bill called 'ludicrous, dangerous' by security experts

Well first off this bill itself was "leaked"?  as in the very people who wrote it couldn't even keep IT secure?  LOL   Would someone PLEASE do a two minute hack into Feinstein's phone and release it all, over the internet?  It's the ONLY way all of this is going to go away. Where's Snowdrn when we really need him?  I dont expect to see a sex tape of hers, (oh god I hope not anyway), but maybe some top secret stuff leaked directly from her device would give that ill informed mess some idea as to what is at stake here.

  • Poll: What Apple goodies did you receive this holiday season? [Update: Poll fixed]

We skipped Christmas this year and after I submitted my purchases to that poll I could see why. We bought (2) iPhone 6S+, iPad mini 4, iPad Pro with the pencil + keyboard Smart Cover and regular Smart Cover and even purchased the Watch sport model.

I would have bought a new laptop but when I took my 17" laptop in for Apple's $270 "tune-up" program when I got it back there was a laundry list f replacements. Holy crap!  It was working perfectly. I just wanted them to see if anything looked in need of repair before it turned 5.

They replace the LCD screen, put in a new logic board, replaced my 5 year battery, replaced the track mouse (because the battery swelled a little pushing against it slightly, damaging the edges) and even replaced my brand new 16GB ram upgrade saying "what you bought wasn't optimized for your unit."  But more shocking than everything they replaced, they didn't charge me the $270 "tune-up" fee because evidently my LCD screen was part of a recall I chose to not take part in. The handed me an invoice shoeing $0.00 owed. I refused to sign it. When I tried to pay them they said "anytime a recall is performed everything else replaced during the recall repair is then free".  WTF?   I tired to make them take the money saying "that's not fair. I didn't know there was a recall I want to pay for what you replaced". They finally got a manager involved who also wouldn't take my money. Geez I just wanted to do the right thing here!

Anyway, with all of the above, I decided to forfeit Christmas and give what I would have spent (tree, presents, etc...) to the Humane Society as a large donation, along with a big bag of toys. I already had Christmas all year long.

    Hey where's the poll results?
I was just curious what others bought.
    Happy Holidays guys!!

  • Which Apple W1-equipped headphones are right for you?

    jibberj said:
I bought a pair of Powerbeats 3 but I haven't opened them and I'm reluctant to keep them after most reviews say the Bose Soundsport wireless sound way better. But I'm drawn to the W1 so not sure which way to go.
Powerbeats 2 are fantastic sound so I'm sure 3 would be equal to just better battery. My favorite feature besides the sound... the distance!

i can leave my iPhone upstairs in the back bedroom, go downstairs to the kitchen to feed the cats or take the trash out and still can hear music, answer calls, text people, etc all from on the controller on the headset. It's really great.

I also love love how once I turn on my truck they magically release to the truckss Bluetooth with no assistance and when I exit the truck the music is still playing but now in my ear.

The 3 will be even better since it has the W1 Chi. Just make sure you use the largest flexi they have as it creates a suction keeping ALL the sound in your ear.

  • European Union seeks to ban backdoors for encrypted communications

What do you know?  They got one right.  Out of all their idiotic and ridiculous rulings if they put this into law they'll at least have gotten one right.  <grin>
