Thanks for the advice. After reading some of the other Genius Bar threads, I realized bad RAM can cause funkiness, so on a whim, I tried removing the memory chips one at a time (I have two 128MB chips). EUREKA! Upon removing the second chip, e…

AllinOne, Yes, the CDs mount fine. I just can't boot from them.

I tried resetting PRAM (4 chimes), and the Open Firmware suggestion. Still no dice. I don't seem to have the Hardware Check CD anymore (I doubt I could boot from it anyway). Any other ideas, anyone? Thanks, J

My understanding was that the 9.2 CDs that come with new machines are full versions. I installed 9.2.1 on my iMac DV 400 from the CD that came with my TiBook. Now I have problems. I don't know if the install was responsible, but it's a real pain …

Thanks for the advice, all. It's not from a reseller; I actually swapped it for my old Wallstreet. It's from Fall 1999, and I don't believe it was under extended warranty. I'm fairly certain it's the HD, not the DVD drive. It spins down to sil…

Anyone have any idea whether mail.app will eventually support mail.yahoo's new authentication requirements? Yahoo had recently become my main account after graduating from college, and now it's very frustrating that Mail won't send through it.

I just tried. You can use Premiere. Go to Project > Settings > Video, set Frame Size to 320X220. Import your 320X240 movie, drag it into the Timeline, and select it. Apply a filter (Clip > Filters). You could use the crop …

Indeed it was a hardware problem, but I haven't brought it in for repair, since the problem's gone away. I kinda just lightly pushed the back of the screen near the hinges, and like magic, the problem's gone, hasn't returned since (a couple of ho…

I can't help with the mic, but as for the desktop pic... The pink shows up in preview when you use a GIF with transparency. The pink shows up instead of the transparent parts. Try using appearance to select that picture, and then set as desktop. …

Some idears: >1. update to Toast 5.02 (updating to 5.01 got my Sony drive to work but it was FireWire not SCSI). I'll try, but the drive worked fine with 4.x when I bought it, so I don't think this is where the problem lies. >…

Another vote for Mail.app. I'm a sucker for simplicity.

Netscape Communicator (4.x on OS 9) came with Netscape Composer, and I remember using that fairly intuitively before I learned HTML. Also, Adobe PageMill used to ship bundled with many printers and scanners, so you might be able to find a copy of…

12" AluMiniBook The 17" could be aLumiBook for its luminous keyboard too (OK, it's not that elegant).

I played around a little with the solid state wheel in the SoHo store. It felt just as responsive as the mechanical wheel, and I didn't mind the lack of tactile feedback. So as long as it doesn't get jumpy over time, I guess it's an improvement i…

Can anyone post simple instructions on how to set up an external hard drive as a boot drive? I have a Firefly 5 GB drive, and yeah, I know that's the same disk as the iPod and therefore is not recommended for booting on a regular basis. But I'd l…

I used Airport for the first time this week. I was traveling and needed to email something. I walked into a restaurant* opened my 'book, and presto--I was on the internet. Beautiful. *The restaurant "Wrap" on Newbury St. in Boston has an Airport …
