I've been running generic RAM in my mini for 4 months now with no complaints. Cheaper RAM typically has a higher latency (slightly slower), but that's pretty much the only difference.

I'm going to try to hold out till my birthday in September, which likely won't happen if I keep reading threads like these! I can afford one now, but I just got into the mini, and it's holding up well with the faster HD inside. It already has a futu…

For what it's worth, I think Intel dumped MS on the Xbox 360, not the other way around. Intel was either losing money or just breaking even on those embedded P3s, so losing that deal was no big loss to them (not to mention that there's no Intel adve…

Quote: 283 watts of heat for the dual core AMD. How hot is a G4 or G5? I now see the end of the speed advance for the personal computer - when AMD gets to 2400 watts total power consumption, they will require more than a dedicated 20 amp circuit…

My guess is price. 4200s are the cheapest.

I'm not sure I can anymore. I ended up selling that notebook 1 year later for $800. That would be an interesting notion, as I could walk away with a $100 profit after using the notebook an entire year!

Nope. They aren't compatible. However, PC133 is still out there, you just have to go to local shops or online for it: Hope this Link works

I feel your pain. I bought a Demo laptop from them for a huge discount ($900 for a $1300 retail Centrino system). They wanted to sell me the extended warranty so badly. I kept telling them NO over and over and over. Eventually, they actually dropped…

Seems like a really good deal to me, regardless of what new products come out. Is it the 1.2ghz model?

There you have it. This could almost be another sticky thread.

Not sure about the powerbook, but to upgrade the ibook, you just unclip the keyboard, remove the airport card, and unscrew a metal plate. It sounds more complicated than it is, but it takes maybe 20min.

I'm not that concerned, personally. 2.7ghz is not that far off from AMD's top spec'ed K8, which currently only maxes as 2.6ghz (though 3.0ghz seems possible by 2006). Provided IBM's cpu has an IPC similar to the K8 and not the P4, then there's not …

Desktop machines take 184pin DDR DIMMs, while notebooks take smaller, 200pin SODIMMs. Here's what desktop RAM looks like: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...141-164&DEPA=0 And this is what notebook RAM looks like: http://www.newegg.…

I purchased some of the cheapest RAM possible for both of my Macs, and I installed it myself. I think Patriot is in the ibook, and PQI is in my mini. So far, I've seen no performance issues. Of course, I used faster RAM than required on both (PC2700…

They didn't call them iMinis.

I use Text-Wrangler for all such needs. It's awesome for a freeware app. It's smart enough to handle HTML tags and uses spell check, so it's a very good HTML editor.

hmm, I put in an airport card into my ibook a while back, and it used to shock me too. It's stopped doing it recently. I don't understand why it would do it? Anyway, I'm not sure about using the wire to open a mini, but using a putty knife is rea…

natty, No, repair permissions is unnecessary. They shouldn't be changing unless you are installing a bunch of sketchy software all the time. As for leaving it on all the time, it's not totally true. My machine is in "sleep" mode when I don't use…

I wonder how hot the batteries get when recharging. Current notebook batteries can get quite toasty when recharging. Maybe it won't get hot, since it seems to take up juice quite efficiently.

Even if Apple makes its own drivers, I think it's still a hardware issue with ATi, thus the higher driver overhead. ATi is the most popular choice in graphics on windows machines, so I think they prioritize DirectX over OpenGL. It seems most games a…
