Apple authorised serviced providers in many cases aren't allowed to repair things and end up just been glorified mailing and shipping centres. Not a viable option.

Not everyone wants a $1000 phone, in fact the majority want affordable phones, which is why we see Apple been left behind in sales. Outside the US the iPhone is a niche product. Soon we will see Xiaomi and Oppo overtake Apple in worldwide sales.
