You dont need antivirus/spyware/adware software on you mac (not yet anyway). You can install it and clean up other peoples mess for them. I suppose it will only be a matter of time before we get a real virus etc. Dobby.

The eMac will probably have more Mhz than the powerbook and the harddrive is also 7200rpm opposed to the smaller 4500 (or similar) laptop harddrives. Do you have any startup items etc? Are you at the same OS version etc? The new powerbooks (1.5…

Use DHCP with manual address and give yourself the ip address that your router/dsl connection normally gives you. If you have a number of machines connected (like I do at home) then make sure the ip is higher in the subnet range. eg. if you router…

Try NeoOffice http://www.neooffice.org/ Its like openoffice without X11. I run it on a B&W 300Mhz iwth 512 MB and it isn't that slow (except to open for the first time). Dobby.

FTPS is ftp over a SSL (secure sockets layer) connection. SFTP is not ftp but SCP (secure copy) commands (or similar) over a SSH2 (secure shell) connection. Dobby.

No. You need to reformat to combine the drive partitions. Veritas volume manager (and others) allows you to dynamically increase decrease volume size without destroying data and that can have a UFS on it so I'm sure apple will eventually have som…

The Dual 2.5Ghz is a real beast. If you can afford the lowest spec 2.5Ghz then buy it and upgrade it with parts from your PC etc. Its cheaper and you have a machine that will last for many years to come. The current 1.8ghz doesn't have a PCI-X slot…

DVI is as common as muck on corporate PC's (well at our place). We have to buy expensive DVI KVM switch for these. Dobby.

If you want a supported alternate browser to Safari then use Firefox. If you have problem with Safari then try this. Safari on Tiger seems very stable but so does Firefox. Dobby.

Check the apple support site for unlocking bootprom passwords. To unlock your password just boot from a panther cd and choose the change password service. (or boot -S and change it yourself if you know the root password) Dobby.

You could put in a startup item (/Library/StartupItems) that dismounts the drive after startup (umount -f /Volumes/whateveryourvolumenameis) Dobby.

I think only QS G4s and newer had UltraATA 100 or 133. You can buy an ATA133 pci card to plug your drive into. So your older G4 won't support big disks. Dobby.

Either boot and hold the option key to chosoe your boot partition or boot off your Panther disk and choose the boot disk. Dobby.

Dejavu. I'm sure I've read this elsewhere.

The reason that you don't get Apple in the enterprise is that there is no native password expiry/user expiry etc that comes with most other OS's and other basic security setting for controlling thousands of users. The LDAP support pre 10.3 sucked b…

I want to try opening that case myself. Surely just a flat head screwdriver will suffice. Dobby.

I'm glad you don't get a screen with it. Most people have screens. If they want a cheap machine with screen and keyboard then the eMac is the way to go. As for keyboard you can buy an el cheapo usb keyboard for a couple of dollars as well as a mou…

I would love to set a mMac up as a Home server. Plug a 400GB firewire drive in for music and movies and it would be an awsome setup. I wonder if the graphics card would take it. The sheer size makes it much more attactive for a home unit where I jus…

Make sure you instal the BSD sub system as Towel recommends and leave out the multi language stuff (how often will you change the language to French or whatever!). Also leave out the Printer Drivers unless you connect to loads of different printers…
