USB booting is posible, I even booted OS 9, from a USB flash drive. The boot volume has to be formmated in HFS or HFS+.

CJ: Sounds like your harddrive might be falty or something came loose after you put it back together. Try pressing the Option key while rebooting to see if the firmware finds a partition it can boot from. Luis
