  • Apple Pay usage remains steady despite decline in mobile wallets, survey says

Most of the in person stores I frequent regularly don’t take Apple Pay.  When they do I use it from the watch.  Most of the fast food places do use it so I usually use it there as well.  Ironically I am typing this from In-N-Out burger place, which takes it, but I used an Amex that had a special offer attached and somewhere on the small print of the offer it said something about “Mobile Wallet” use not eligible for the offer.  I usually actually use it here.  But today I had to take the card out.

When Apple Pay was new I had a bunch of problems but have not had any problems since except with web use , which seems to be hit or miss in implementation still.

  • Germany wants Apple to offer iPhone updates and parts for 7 years

I think Apple already covers this or is very close and could cover it with minor adjustments.

I do believe the soundbite that got out early was, 'oh my god, Apple is scanning my phone for images.' This is not what is happening." — Craig Federighi

It is what is happening.  How else do they create the “magical” hashes? It is happening on the phone.  So, Craig, why do you say that is not what is happening when that is exactly what is happening?

Agreeing to the terms of service for iCloud is the only thing that actually matters. Once you do that, files that are coming from apps that you've chose to be backed up in iCloud are going to be scanned. There's no difference between that happening on the phone or on the iCloud servers. You agreed to the terms and the files being scanned are exactly the same in both scenarios.
Wrong.  Agreeing to the terms of service to iCloud does not allow them to repurpose my phone to do that scan.  They can scan it in iCloud.   This on phone scanning is not needed and just opens Pandora’s Box.

  • Alaska Airlines flight evacuated after Samsung Galaxy smartphone combusts

All the comments here about the captain overreacting are laughable, at best.  The captain doesn't have the luxury of playing it cool when he has human lives that he's responsible for.

Also LOL at Samsung for still making shitty products.

Which was the greater danger.   Removing the smoldering phone, already in the containment bag, or having a hundred or two people go down the slides.  Every time I hear about planes deploying slides, there end up being injuries.

This is not about an active,  uncontained fire on an airplane.  Of course you evacuate when that happens.  This is about a smoldering phone that was contained in a bag made for that purpose.  On a plane on the ground.   Which is the greater danger?  Throwing/removing the containment bag off the plane or slide evacuating a hundred or two people.   I don’t know the answer but it is a reasonable question and not at all laughable.

  • Apple Watch potentially saved Boston man's life twice

Three weeks ago, I passed out and unconscious for an hour. I missed an appointment with my cardiologist and he called my iPhone a few times but couldn’t reach me. I was wearing an Apple Watch. It did nothing. I didn’t see my Apple Watch could save my life in the real world situation.
Did you have a hard fall?  Or pass out while sitting or lying down?
