  • Source code for iOS 9's 'iBoot' component reportedly leaks online

Things like this really piss me off. I hope someone ends up in jail and bankrupt.
Why? The people that do this are only pushing Apple and others to strengthen security in each new product and software release. These "hackers" are undoubtedly incredibly intelligent, many are often on the autistic spectrum so don't understand the average-IQ, lay-person's logic - many also just do it because they can and are not interested in money, the reward itself is cracking the code. If anything, it's these guys that the companies and governments should be hiring to stay ahead of the game.
Something tells me possibly this is not a mistake, but rather a disgruntled employee who "leaked" it on purpose. Regardless, someone needs to be held accountable for this. Stuff like this should never see the light of day for the public at large. You don't just leak a very important part of the OS. I'd like to know the actual reason why this was leaked.
Actual reason was most likely what you said, disgruntled employee.

If vulnerabilities are discovered, might be a good thing.  Did details of how the FBI got into that one phone ever come out?  Maybe whatever method the "3rd party" used to get into it will be ruined by the outcome of this leak.

I wish it hadn't happened, but if something is cracked then Apple will plug it and may just solve an issue they weren't aware they had.  Silver linings.

Wonder if author complains that his 5 year old car doesn't have the latest bells and whistles, burns a little oil, doesn't get the MPG it used to, and smells different?

NYT author is just looking to meet a deadline and fill space, because he is so wrong on many fronts.  My iPad mini was bought a year or so after my son was born, which was almost 7 years ago.  Day 1 I put an otterbox lifeproof on it and he has grown up on that thing.  He still uses it daily and has no qualms about it, and he also uses my 2017 iPad occasionally.  I notice the speed difference, he doesn't.  it has survived so many bumps and drops I'm amazed it is still in like new condition.  Never had anything changed on it and I am not sure it has ever been out of that otterbox now that I think of it.

It has a lightning charger so I'm good, it just works so I'm good, and it gives him something to be "his computer" to watch youtube, play games, and be his camera.

Long story short, that original iPad mini has never once [knock on wood] had even a hiccup while being stress tested by the ultimate QA tester...a human male toddler.

  • Apple wants to make it easier to afford pricey products, in talks for new financing deal w...

It would seem more "Apple-like" to instead just price the financing cost upfront to keep it somewhat hidden.  Me personally, and this may just be me, would prefer to pay $49 up front as opposed to being told "your item is $899 and your financing will be at 6% APR".  Bake the payment-plan option price into the purchase price and that seems more palatable.

I still would wait to buy it outright, but I hate to see Apple look like a payday loan system or start getting into auto dealership type "now with 0% APR for 60 months with approved credit" type garbage.
