  • AT&T announces plans to launch mobile 5G service in 12 cities by end of 2018

Now we can burn through our data plans in a few minutes time. NEAT! Still will have the same low amount data plans. 5G really not worth it.
I've tried, but cannot figure out how people think that faster service will use MORE data?  A movie is a fixed amount of data, whether you get it downloaded in 2 minutes or 2 hours.  A website contains a fixed amount of data, too.  Everything you do is a fixed amount of data and that amount of data won't change just because you have faster service.

If you use your phone data service to download torrents all day, then I can possibly see how you'd use your plan data faster, but people don't do that.   Maybe you have nothing better to do than watch endless Youtube videos every day until your data is depleted?  Then, yes, you would consume all your data faster.

But for everyone else, we will generally use the same amount of data as we do each month.  Analogy--the city triples the size of the water main coming into your water meter at your house.  Are you going to consume 3x more water because the pipe in the street is bigger?
I'm with you.  All I can figure is that if I'm not spending time waiting on a video to buffer but am instead watching the video, I can watch more videos per day?

  • Third iPhone battery lawsuit says Apple used slowdowns to avoid fixing defects

    loopless said:
These lawsuits are total BS and AppleInsider should stop giving them such prominence. Especially with comments from people who think Apple should be producing a flip phone with a pop-out battery.

Users are unlikely to notice slowdowns - but artificial benchmarks will show issues and only with phones will degraded batteries. I would MUCH rather my phone slowed down bit than suddenly "quit".
This issue is they never told anyone they were doing this, and appear to only be doing so now because of concrete proof that has spread.  It's like when someone apologizes after they got caught...there is hell to pay.

So yeah, they may be doing this for good reason but the APPEARANCE is that they got caught slowing down phones to increase new sales.  That's going to be a problem, where if they had said from day 1 that they plan on throttling older devices to increase longevity then people would have knowingly gone along with that (or only have themselves to blame).

  • Apple's AirPods a smash hit, shipments could reach 28M in 2018

I'm approaching middle age and the need for a "get off my lawn" sign, but I'm an entrenched Apple ecosystem user because things just work.  I don't have to worry about standing on one leg and holding my tongue just right and hope that whatever awesome tech junk I bought will work that day.  Apple makes things simple and makes their stuff work well together.  That said, I have yet to purchase Air Pods.  I have had them in my cart many times ready to pull the trigger but then I pause because these were released in 2016.  We are coming up on 2018, so shouldn't there be some sort of refresh coming out?  Not sure what that is aside from a different case (separate purchase anyhow, I know) but I'm nervous about spending the 2018 price on 2016 tech and then right after they come out with something that has a slight change...but in Apple I trust to change when needed and not "because".

So here I sit, waiting still.  I'm sure someone reading this knows there is no refresh or upgrade coming and if that's the case I'd be happy to know.  :)
Don’t hesitate. Just do it. I was in the same boat. Finally pulled the trigger. Never looked back. Fit. Usage. All. Maybe I’m not objective (comment from wife: nope. He is far far away from anything remotely objects ;) ) but bought as gimmick I wouldn’t want to miss them anymore.
I'm a sucker for a gimmick.  But now I'm in the pre-Xmas doldrums where I can't buy anything for myself because it might step on presents.  I'm too impulsive for this time of year to be fun :)

Here's my advice:  if you're married, ask your spouse for a pair for Christmas (or your next gift-exchange opportunity).  She/he will be happy to have something to get you; you will get a present you love; and you won't worry about whether you should have waited--because you didn't buy it!  I'm 100% serious.  Just do it; you'll be glad you did.
haha, that's exactly what I did.  then black friday/monday rolled around and she bought "us" a new Dyson v8 as a gift for us both.  DOH.  I figured it's too close to xmas to buy for myself, i could see her still getting them for me since I told her over a month ago that was what I wanted
