  • Report reaffirms Apple still plans to 'allow iPad apps to run on Macs this year'

Most of the code of a iOS application compile and run natively on macOS; most of the libraries are the same, and large part of the UI infrastructure is also the same.
Actually, from a developer point of view, iOS and macOS are already very very close.
I'm confused what you mean by "large part of the UI infrastructure is also the same". While a lot of naming and hierarchies are similar, it's quite different when you look at the details of the counterparts. NSViewController and UIViewController serve different purposes, drawing y-origins are in reverse for Quartz, NSButton and UIButton behave differently, NSView and UIView have different responders that react different because of an input base vs gesture based system.

This is my larger point of pointing out why Apple came up with UXKit internally (https://sixcolors.com/post/2015/02/new-apple-photos-app-contains-uxkit-framework/). From what we have gathered, UXKit is essentially marrying UIKit and AppKit. AppKit has a lot of cruft it has gathered over the last 20+ years (a lot of carryover from the NeXTStep days). They really need to come up with a new framework for the Mac. I imagine we will see the emergence of something like UXKit at WWDC this year, though I've predicted that for the last two years :)

  • Apple's Face ID with attention detection fooled by $200 mask

From Mashable: "Bkav researchers said that making 3D model is very simple," the blog post noted. "A person can be secretly taken photos of in just a few seconds when entering a room containing a pre-setup system of cameras located at different angles. Then, the photos will be processed by algorithms to make a 3D object."

So, to unlock an iPhone X using this hack, you need to do one of two things: 1) Steal a phone and then capture a bunch of photos of the owner without his/her knowledge, print a mask using stone dust and some kind of infrared printer, all within 48 hours (or less) to get under the phone's biometric time limit, or 2) do all of that stuff BEFORE you steal the phone so the mask will be ready when you have the phone in your custody.

Oh yeah. You iPhone X owners should be petrified with concern.

Not to mention, it takes two attempts before default to a passcode which puts them at square one. Better nail that mask on the first try.

  • Apple on the hook for $439.7 million to VirnetX over FaceTime should appeals, patent inval...

I get they have an app, but they don't utilize these technologies. Also going through Eastern Texas is extremely suspect to me.

Austin Meyers (originator of X-Plane) took a trip there to illustrate how corrupt this system is:

  • watchOS 4 no longer lets you browse iPhone music library on your Apple Watch

I'm actually welcoming this. It seems I'm constantly battling playing music off of the watch vs the phone. Yesterday my phone was just out of reach (in locker room) while I was working out. I started playing music off of the watch, then it switched to the phone middle of playback, then back to the watch, but show the music on the phone while playing a different song off of the watch. I can see how this feature change would get rid of these types of problems.

  • Alpine delivers first in-dash wireless CarPlay receiver you can install yourself

I applaud Alpine for being first with wifi CarPlay. I feel it's a step in the right direction. Hopefully Sony, kenwood and pioneer catch up on that front.

But I personally will not be considering this headunit. No 4 or 5 volt pre-outs equals no sale here. For $900 there isn't any excuse when your competition (kenwood 9903s and pioneer 8200nex/4200nex) does it and for much cheaper. If you want to charge a premium to standout than at least offer premium features that audio enthusiasts have demanded for years. At a minimum offer a CarPlay deck that does have them.

I'm a huge alpine fan but lately their head units have really thrown me for a loop.

With th regards to CarPlay in general. I use it every day. I have a kenwood 9903s in my evo and a pioneer 4200nex in my Tacoma. Soon as I leave the driveway it picks up I'm heading to work and automatically routes the quickest route taking into consideration times and traffic density. I have a 12 mile commute and it has taken me on various routes I never knew about. I love that it analyzes your current trip and suggests other routes based on current data asking you if you'd like to change routes. Save 5 min by changing this way, yep!

Audio wise it seems the 9903s is a bit more advanced in the CarPlay audio section. Browsing is quick. A must for Apple Music or Spotify imo. Just wish Apple would open it up to developers.
