  • Apple's millennial leap from fading Golden Age icon to flexible, flashy plastic fashion

"... and the fastest-growing Android maker in China is also threatening to use its own Linux fork"

Huawei isn't 'threatening' anything of the sort.

The linked article even makes that crystal clear. They have NO plans to move from Android. They have a backup plan in case the US government tries to impede its use of Android. That's it. No threats in sight.

  • 'iPhone XI' and 'iPhone XI Max' case manufacturing dummies pop up on Chinese social media

I don't care what they're trying to achieve and how good the result will be. This is just not as important to me as how good the phone looks. If it comes like this – and everything is pointing towards that it is – this will be one ugly phone. Ugliest iPhone so far.
It’s funny, when the leaks come out every year, people say the same thing every year. Since the 4 — nobody could believe the 4 leaks were real, said it was ugly, antenna lines, screws, etc.. Now it’s considered a classic and people pine for it. Happened every shell design after.
I think the iPhone 4 was considered a classic from the get go. No one 'pines' for it, though. It is a classic design where a lot of factors came together at the right time. Just like the Sawtooth Macs and Pismo laptops.

Later designs have regularly been called boring due to the lack of change in shell design. 6,7 and 8 series earned them that reputation.

There are only so many designs you can play off on a phone but you have to bring something to market to stand out. Apple largely failed at that for a few years.

Two points that need to be resolved.

    Notches and slipperyness.

Notches are an inevitable compromise. From Sharp first and then everyone else who wanted to maximise screen to body ratios.

They don't bother me but were clearly a 2018 design element. Towards the end of 2018, sliding mechanisms, smaller notches and hole punches all came out as possible alternative options. Of all the options available, I think the wide notch is the worst. It doesn't do a great job maximising screen space as so little is left on either side.

    Solution:

Apart from the other options already mentioned, I think the best alternative is to move the components out of the screen altogether and house them in the frame and a Pismo style curve. This would give the phone a new form factor without dominating the overall look.

Slipperyness is a constant problem and with all glass phones, the consequences can be devastating. Again a Pismo style narrowing along the vertical frame would go a long way towards reducing drops resulting from phones slipping out of people's hands.

It is not the first time I have mentioned both ideas here.

Apple need to up their game so good news. Today comparison photos on web taken in near total darkness with iPhone came out just totally black but with great detail on P30 Pro so hoping they'll also catch up with low light software of Huawei also. Currently way behind the 8 ball??
Because taking photos in complete darkness is day to day necessary?  I admit it's a cool feature and It is impressive, but behind the 8 ball?  Let's see what September brings.

Also as someone pointed out here already the P30 Pro like the P20 Pro before it have color accuracy problems. Over processed and not color accurate was the wording that was used.

I am no camera expert, but this seems WAY more important of a thing to work out than pics in complete darkness..  For the record I think the cameras on the P30 are pretty damn impressive and I love the low light shots it can take. Just making an observation..
Jpg's, which almost everyone shoots, do not exhibit the problem and are of great quality.

There is a problem but it looks like a software update will fix it.

People won't use the cameras much to take photos in complete darkness. What counts is the low light performance, not performance in darkness although there are some uses for that too. Also the ability to point and shoot in those low light settings without needing long exposures is a plus. Although, once again, if you really want to switch to Night Mode, you can take long exposure, hand held photos if necessary. There are now plenty of examples all over the web.

The iPhone will gain similar functionality in the next refresh.

Doesn't make any sense. According to the forums Apple's greed and lack of innovation is killing their sales.
Yeah, well, what does that tell you about tech blog forums? Tech blog forums are a conglomeration of anonymous posters with axes to grind, mostly negative axes against Apple in particular. Even after 40 years they can’t accept the fact that Apple exists, let alone is successful. The existence of Apple does something to their psyches, a sort of migraine headache of the id.
Yeah it's really bizarre. That Apple affects them in this way is bizarre enough, but that they go out of their way to hang around an Apple site to constantly and routinely tell people why other companies did it first, are more innovative, blah blah, is even more bizarre....at that point it's either a paycheck or an unhealthy condition. I'm not into sports, but I can't imagine going to some rival team's website to tell everybody how much they dislike their team. Nuts.
If you care to look, mostly the situation is the opposite. Something is said that actually isn't true or is only half true and this results in more balanced and accurate viewpoints coming into play. Those viewpoints more often than not carry the weight of supporting links etc have the benefit of coming from people who use both iOS and Android as systems or software that runs on both systems.

Having correct or simply even contrasting information is key to understanding a discussion.

    Here's some data;

    https://www.counterpointresearch.com/apple-maintains-lead-premium-smartphone-segment-oneplus-enters-top-five-brands-first-time-2018/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletterapril18-19

Note that Huawei still doesn't lead in any region>

If anything Oppo is the builder with the most rapid growth in the segment.

You keep assuming that Huawei would be a good choice for the U.S., but the truth would be that it would takes some of Samsung's share, and very little of Apple's.

    Reason is pretty obvious;

272 Apple stores serving decades of loyal U.S. customers.
    From your link:

"Growth was driven by new iPhones and launches in a premium segment from Chinese OEMs like Huawei, OPPO, OnePlus."

That was growth in the premium segment, not the general market.

From 2017 to 2018 Apple dropped from 58% to 51% share. Apple is contracting in the premium sector while Chinese brands expand, among them Huawei.

Leading in a region isn't representative of much. Not long ago people here were claiming that Huawei and other Chinese brands would not affect Apple's premium share but simply take away from Samsung.

That was incorrect. Apple is seeing fierce competition in the premium sector and losing share.

Huawei, with national distribution in the US would have a very negative and direct effect on Apple and of course Samsung. National distribution - through a carrier - in the US would have even more negative effects on Apple. Just like it has had a dramatic effect in every other market where it has carrier distribution.

Huawei actually spent a year tuning the Kirin 970 to AT&T's US network, signed a deal with them but AT&T pulled out days before the official announcement due to suspected government pressure.

AT&T continues to work with Huawei in Mexico.

  • Qualcomm keeps quiet about Apple deal value following lawsuit settlement

    mattinoz said:
Hmm, Apple didn’t need to settle this immediately.  It’s unlikely 5G modems are going into 2019 iPhones regardless.  They could have played this out a while, played their hand in court, which I think was a strong hand on the merits of their complaints, and let the FTC case get underway, all before striking a deal.  It’s likely the deal Apple would get might have gotten better and better as time and the league actions proceeded forward.  Up to a point.  It would likely have served Apple and not QCOM to delay a settlement for several months, but not throughout the entire appeals process that most assuredly would have followed any jury verdict.  And so going into the trial it would have been Qualcomm that would have been more eager to reach a settlement, before its dirty laundry was aired and reputation knocked in front of the general public, its customers and the FTC, which no doubt would have been looking on with interest.

And while Qualcomm may not have caved, they might have offered up some incentive to strike a deal now, something they likely held very firm against in past negotiations. And it was enough for Apple to bite.  Something that would make the FTC look with favor and that Apple would see as an ethical win.  My guess... double dipping.
Indeed I didn't realise how huge 5G hardware is. Image From https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/12/dont-buy-a-5g-smartphone-at-least-not-for-a-while/ . Considering Apple may or may be able to replace the snapdragon with the Aseries your 5G phone is going to be larger, run hotter, have less battery life than a really good 4G phone for a few years to come and for what. 5G iPad or laptop makes more sense than making phones ever larger.

That image is of the X50, not the X55.

Being multimode, the X55 in theory won't require a separate modem for 4G.

Huawei's Balong 5000 5G modem was multimode from the start, so doesn't require the separate 4G modem either.
