Mozilla rampages over a lack of browser choice
Whenever I encounter a web site that isn't behaving as expected in Safari (macOS of course), I try it in an alternate browser. It use to be Chrome, but now my alternate browser is ... Edge.
Yes, Edge on macOS.
Safari works for me most of the time (by far), so as the alternate browser, I don't have that much experience using Edge on macOS, but it seems to work fine. (I still occasionally use Windows, so I stick with Edge as the default there). -
Upgraded version of O.MG hacking cable packs nefarious new capabilities
I have seen on a few occasions a charging cable being made available to passengers in a Uber or Lyft car. I think I used one once a few years ago, but when I first heard about these hacking cables, never again will I plug into a cable in a ride-share or in public phone charging facilities.
Also, the article and some of the comments here suggest that the price will deter some people, but as the article states, "it's a tool for professionals." Well, there are enough of these "professionals" out there that put card skimming devices on ATM and gas pumps or who use key fob relay devices to break into your car. To them, less than a couple hundred bucks is no big deal. So while it's probably true that most of us don't need to be overly concerned, especially as long as we're being diligent, there's still plenty to be concerned about. The fact that some "low level scammers" would be deterred is no comfort. -
Periscope lens coming for iPhone 15 Pro
The basic concept of folded ("periscope") zoom lenses is certainly not new. Here's a summary of a technical paper about folded lenses from about the same time as the Sony DSC cameras I mention below:

Perhaps Sony could be a supplier.
Well over a dozen years ago, Sony had the DSC-T100/T120 followed by the DSC-T700, a very slim point-and-shoot camera (remember those?) with an internally folded zoom lens. DSC-T700 review:

Looks like Sony has plans to incorporate a similar design in a phone coming out soon. Because of this, not sure Apple would be interested in Sony now (not to say that Sony's phone would actually be a competitive threat). Review here (Looks like the Xperia is where the picture in the article comes from):

And as mentioned in post #9, Apple has their own patent. The only reason I can think of to consider Samsung is that they have a really good solution. I guess patents get into particular techniques and perhaps Apple thinks they can find something better than what they patented? Here is Apples patent as shown on patents.google:

How the iPad is used by AppleInsider staff and why it remains important
I have an original 1st gen iPad Air and a 2018 11" iPad Pro. I use them both as additional monitors simultaneously connected to my 2020 13" MBP i5 in my WFH set up. The Air connects using an app called YAM (installed on both iPad and Mac) with a wired lightning-to-USB connection, while the Pro uses Sidecar (via WiFi). This way, I have a continuous, extended desktop, compact triple-monitor configuration using only my MBP keyboard/trackpad along with BT mouse as interface.
YAM is quite nice, seeing as it works with an old iPad that doesn't support Sidecar, and can be used at the same time as Sidecar. The YAM app on iPad was $7.99 and the Mac app is free. YAM is very reliable, but I have to say, Sidecar is not that reliable for me -- it sometimes loses connection, with display still showing but cursor not able to move to that display. I have to disconnect and re-connect in Display Preferences to bring it back. (WiFi signal strength is always very strong, so not sure why Sidecar would not be more reliable). This happens even if YAM is not being used. -
Everything we know about the next HomePod
602warren said:Personally been advocating this amongst friends and colleagues for a few years now, but an AppleTV built IN to a HomePod that looks like a soundbar seems like a no brainer to me. Sits right below your TV, looks kinda like the old Apple hi-fi but with updated 3D mesh, plays music and all that normal stuff, but keeps you from having to buy two separate products and de clutters your entertainment center.
How about an Apple product along the lines of the Roku Streambar Pro. Maybe even also offer an optional subwoofer, and make the HP Minis usable as satellite rear channel speakers.
(I have the Roku Streambar and Subwoofer -- the soundbar is a little "boxy" sounding IMO, but much better than TV speakers, and it is relatively inexpensive. All the streaming apps are there, including AppleTV, plus Airplay 2 supported. Gaming not really an option, but I'm OK with that.)
