  • Is iPhone still cool? Maybe Apple should flip the script

What's not cool about the Samsung flip phones is how thick they are when they're folded. Also, the price.

Reliability/durability of the folding "glass" is a concern too. The argument could be made that people tend to trade in phones every 2-4 years, so maybe doesn't matter as much, but trade-in value would be next-to-nothing if they're shown to fail after a few years.

  • Compared: Microsoft's Surface Pro 8 vs 12.9-inch iPad Pro

If I'm invested in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or (full) Visual Studio on a PC I'm not going to even look at a Mac, much less an iPad Pro.
    ...

AutoCAD on Mac is actually pretty good these days. I use it almost every day, often on my 10-year old MBP.

There's even an iPad version of AutoCAD. It has some quirks, but I haven't used it in a while, so maybe it's better now (it won't run on older iPads -- needs 13.0 or higher). Last time I checked it was OK for viewing, light editing, picking off dimensions, and doing mark-ups.

Revit, on the other hand, is not likely to ever run on Macs. I'm trying to learn how to use it, so for this and other Windows-only hardware configuration apps, I'm still pretty much stuck with Windows. Right now, I'm running Win10 either on Bootcamp or a VM. (Not having this option on Apple Silicon is another thing I'm having to ponder...)

  • Apple rejecting apps is unfair competition, declare rejected app developers

All the large sized app development companies should just create a consortium and develop their own app store using some open version of Android. It will take a long time but they can put the premium versions of their apps on that store and the non premium versions on the Apple and Google stores. Slowly transition away from their reliance on Apple and Google.
Not a bad idea. The government will then go after the "consortium" for anti-competitive behavior and anti-trust. Then they'll know how that feels...

  • Unreleased MacBook Pro screen resolutions discovered in macOS Monterey beta

Whenever I see these discussions questioning the need for high resolution screens, I like to point out that the most basic laser printers print at 300 dpi and are often 600 dpi, which is generally called out as suitable for plain text. The graphics professionals that frequent this site can probably speak more to this, but resolution for photos and higher quality graphics tends to be 1200 dpi and even 2400 dpi.

So even the crappiest laser printers at 300 dpi are out-performing the best screens. To read an 8.5 x 11 page, we typically don't hold it much closer to our eyes than laptop screens, and yet 300 dpi seems to be the bare minimum for quality text and line work.

Another thing to point out is that even though you might not be able to resolve the individual pixels, the higher resolution screens help avoid aliasing artifacts. Not as noticeable for moving content (video) but definitely noticeable on static images like text, architectural plans, and still images. Also, look up vernier acuity or hyperacuity for more info on visual perception of humans. We can visually detect much more information than many realize.

Now, whether the higher resolution screens are important to any particular individual is another matter. You don't have to have a 220-250 dpi screen if you don't want. But don't say nobody can tell the difference.

  • MacBook Pro to drive mini LED use in displays industry-wide, says Ming-Chi Kuo

Well with the criticism Mini LED has attracted in the iPad Pro, and some TV's I'm not overly keen for it I must say. OLED or LCD is still king, micro LED is where they need to be but that's a way off yet.
I'd much rather an OLED screen option.
The way your comment reads, it makes it sound like you don't understand that mini LED is simply an advanced backlight unit ("BLU") for LCD, and that it's not an alternate to LCD or OLED. (Micro LED is definitely an alternate though).
