Class action suit accuses Apple of selling Macs without needed dust filters
I think a filter would cause more problems than not having one. And yes, this is another reason why computers should be user serviceable. To remove dust that inevitably builds up. The filter or not, the dust has to be removed.
Also, does any company have filters in their machines?
One last thing: are these people smokers? -
Compared: buying a 13-inch MacBook Air versus a 13-inch MacBook Pro
It certainly is a dilemma. My daughters’ MBAs are getting on, and maybe new machines would make good Christmas presents. If the MBP had a third gen keyboard (thus theoretically more reliable for life in a school bag) and a current gen processor it would not be a debate.
They would miss the light up logo regardless.
i am also sorely tempted to make the leap to windows for a spectre. Built like a Mac even though it is win10 and has a crappy trackpad in comparison to a Mac. But it’s selling points are it isn’t compromised when it comes to price, ports and CPU power. -
Apple confirms pedestrian-level Maps data collection, initially limited to California
mjtomlin said:philboogie said:Rolling out features at this rate, we'll see a workable Apple Maps app....sometime next century.
Yeah. What gives? Google snapped their fingers and had 100% accurate data covering the entire Earth from day one. /s
People seem to forget that Google has been “mapping” for 15 years now. At the 6 year point, Google Maps wasn’t any better than Apple’s maps is today. In fact, I remember many instances where Google Maps was WAY OFF on some sites, and that was after 10 years into it.
Apple has come a long way, and a lot faster than Google did in the same time frame. The difference between then and now, is that people expect more.

Here are the five biggest iPad Pro problems, because no device is perfect
mcdave said:entropys said:It should just work. If you have to do a work around, the concept is compromised. Then add the escalating prices on anyone wanting anything other than base config. Well, TBH the base config has no doubt impressive margins already, so it is galling. Like far too many Apple products, the iPad Pro has become too expensive to recommend.
i honestly can’t recommend the iPad Pro. Very regretfully. The basic iPad with the old pencil, with its stupid charging solution, is the iPad I have had my workplace switch to from iPad pros. The constant war I have with the Apple Hating IT department to have iPads at all, means I really don’t need the extra lead in the saddle bag of the iPad Pro price. Actually, rather than lead in the saddle bag, maybe it’s plutonium in the saddle bag. Apple product prices is always the first weapon IT use against my use case.
Then IT moves to file management arguments (I have no answer here), and connectivity to local printers and presentation hardware. The day Surface comes with built in GPS it’s game over.
All arguments (& most across the web on iPad Pro) are down to people not getting that you don’t employ the same practice to different products, not Windows PCS, not Macs, iPads. If you do, you either spend too much money or beak the service & productivity workflows built on it. You shouldn’t need to change these, just the practice-layer/people.
Files; I use iPad Pro with OneDrive for Business +SharePoint. Done.
Printers; I use a modern, AirPrint compatible printer. Don.
Presentations; I use AppleTV (the most robust wireless solution) for KeyNote, PowerPoint & best of all - iBooks (as the contain reference material which you can duck into professionally)
Cost; no IT involvement means huge savings.
Good luck. -
15-inch MacBook Pro Radeon Pro Vega 16 and Vega 20 GPU options now available
tht said:entropys said:Is there any reason not to announce new imacs now?
There are lots of reasons. I’m hoping that they will have new form factors and getting a new form factor out takes time, like new components to source (different displays, new assembly line, new components, etc).
If it is the same form factor with the same display, they’ll be moving to T2 based boards, or they decided to wait for early 2019 when a T3 could be available. They are waiting for NAND to be more affordable as switching to SSD only systems will increase the price. They are waiting on specific Intel processors to be shipped in enough volume, like the Core i9 8-core processors. They are waiting on a Vega GPU that they are working with AMD on.
My fear is they will downspec the next iMac both to encourage people to buy an iMac pro, and ream buyers on BTO.
