  • Long-running AOL Instant Messenger shuts down for good

Who cares? Not me...move on already.
I was still using it until it shut down. Sure there are plenty of alternates these days, but as a communications protocol with integration in basically every piece of software it was hard to beat the ubiquity and convenience. It will be missed.

  • Sega releases 'Streets of Rage' for iOS as free-to-play Sega Forever title with local netw...

The SOR2 soundtrack has become my go-to music on deadline day at the ye olde weekly newspaper. It's not as distracting as punk or Megadave, but is astonishingly great.
Easily one of the best soundtracks of the generation! The YM3438 was a thing of beauty.

  • Apple hires veteran producer Michelle Lee to help oversee original TV shows

In an industry that's stifled by political correctness, I just can't see Apple doing anything other than kids shows.
The most successful shows are the ones still pushing boundaries because people are so sick of PC culture being crammed down our throats.
Carpool Karaoke was awful. But I'm guess there's people with beigemobiles who will get something out of it.
Apple will do what's good for the Apple brand. If that results in "boring" shows then so be it -- some of the most popular shows on TV are the most rote, unoriginal content you could imagine. There's a very clear place for those things in the market. That said, I wouldn't be surprised (if the initiative proves successful) to see a sub-label for more mature content, sort of how Disney used to own Miramax/Dimension.

Personally, I just want to see them do better. Just even thinking about Planet of the Apps makes me cry a little inside.

Also maybe dial it back a notch with your "PC" rhetoric, thanks.

  • Apple's new Machine Learning Journal entry tackles differential privacy

The paper is interesting, well written, and pretty accessible to the lay-person. I suggest everyone who is even remotely interested in the subject take a look.

This is a really difficult path for Apple to walk (there's a lot to be gained from a ton of personally identifiable information), and I applaud every ounce of effort they put into initiatives like this. The fact that Apple even cares about your privacy (even if they don't always get it right) is a major differentiation from the other large tech companies. No one cares about their users quite like Apple does.
