  • Thunderbolt 3-equipped MacBook Pro can use external GPUs, but at a cost

You need to look at Bizon for a deliverable external GPU product for the new MacBook Pro (https://bizon-tech.com). The BizonBOX 2S is available now with the BizonBOX 3 coming in early 2017. Some of the latest NVIDIA GPUs aren't supported yet but you can get the NVIDIA GTX TITAN X, 12 GB, DVI, HDMI, 3 DP (3072 CUDA cores). Of course it will set you back $1500 but as you say these are for the adventurous.

Barefeats evaluated this box way back in July 2016,
http://barefeats.com/bizon_box.html. I'm sure they'll be testing the new version when it comes out. He mentioned the new version in October while evaluating the new MBP, http://barefeats.com/rmbp2016.html.
I had no idea such GPU solutions existed. So I'd really just have to spend more money to get some high-end GPU support. As long as Apple doesn't deliberately try to stop the use of this solution, then I have nothing to complain about. I know Apple doesn't give a damn about games so that's just how it has to be. The only thing is, it may make much more sense to build a Windows machine with a good CPU and GPU unless I really needed to use OSX. Anyway, it's nice to find out I can get a powerful GPU solution with an Apple computer. It's just a matter of how much money I'd be willing to spend. It's not a completely elegant solution but it's much, much better than nothing.
Keep in mind you're probably just going to be installing Windows anyway if you intent is gaming. Not only because the games situation on macOS is so poor, but also because of the GPU driver situation. It really doesn't make sense as a solution for basically anybody. You can build a $1500 PC that will blow away something like this, and there's always the console route to consider if you just want to play games.

It's like a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of an academically interested subset of users. That said, it would be fun to mess with.

  • Auto-Playing Ads

Have you considered changing ad networks? I notice many sites are wittingly or unwittingly pushing takeover ads which highjack mobile browsers and send you straight into some app on iTunes.
This is something we are looking at, yes.

The cynic in me thinks that this might be a clever way to get your forum members to click on ads and earn you a kickback (but nevertheless I'll keep an eye out for bad ads and let you know, it can't be easy to manage this stuff).
Drat! You've uncovered my plot to make literally tens of dollars. The one ad we have on the forums tends to be ok, as do the ones on iphone.appleinsider.com, so mostly expecting reports on the desktop side of things.

  • Auto-Playing Ads

    Hello All,

I'm here again to talk about ads.

We've had a problem recently with ad networks blatantly disobeying our preferences and injecting auto-playing audio and/or video ads on the site, or ads that cause the site to jump around when they load. We hate this, it's our policy not to ever show any ads that play audio or jump around on the page. As soon as we see them, we ban them, but as it turns out big ad doesn't care about little independent publishers too much. A lot of the problem stems from the fact that 90% of ads don't get tested against Safari since the market share on the internet at large is so low. That's not the case here at AppleInsider though, and it means we bump into way more issues most publications.

That's where you come in. Frankly, we could use your help in identifying any offending ads. A lot of these things get served up based on geographic location, so it's difficult for us to see what you as a group can collectively see. The best way for you to help us is to see what place the ad goes (also known as the landing page) to so we can ban the URL. Any screenshots you want to attach of the offending ads will help as well, so we can figure out what slots are the largest offenders. Not only will this help us ban the ads as they come up, but it also helps us build a history of the problem which we can then present to our ad partners to show them that something is very wrong on their end.

Anyone who posts in this thread to help identify an ad will receive a special forum badge (TDB), as well as a heap of points. I know it's not much, but hopefully it can help spur some of you into helping us squash these rogue ads.

Thanks for helping, and as always thanks for continuing to read AppleInsider.

  • How Donald Trump's election as U.S. President could affect Apple

    I'm closing this thread.

I would remind you all that regardless of how you feel about the current political climate in the US, we are where we are. That doesn't change what we will allow in terms of name calling and general forum rules. If you want to talk about politics as they do not relate to the article, we have an entire Political Outsider forum for you.
