  • Apple is lying about Apple Intelligence, John Gruber says -- and he's right

Apple should've embraced the AI wave, but focused on how Apple hardware and software excels at running existing AI tech. Then later, swooped in with Apple Intelligence only when it was ready, The iPod and iPhone both succeeded by using that approach.

  • Apple is lying about Apple Intelligence, John Gruber says -- and he's right

OpenAI bursting into the market with ChatGPT really threw imbalance into the market. Suddenly Apple's steady, incremental approach no longer worked, and a key capability — foundational AI frameworks — were lacking in their operating systems.

A year from now, this will all be moot. Siri will be upgraded, and millions of people will be using Apple's tech in favour of the competition.

The wait will be worth it, but let's hope that Apple has learned their lesson not to put the cart before the horse. Don't announce something prematurely!

  • Apple cut too much by removing MagSafe from the iPhone 16e

Does my 13 Pro have MagSafe? I have no idea because I don't have any chargers with magnets, and it doesn't really affect me at all. I toss my phone on one of several Qi chargers that I have scattered around my world and my phone charges.

This definitely seems like a 1st-world problem. Suppose once you have enjoyed a feature, it does hurt to have it taken away, in a sense. Once you live with the convenience of a microwave or TV remote, it's hard to imagine life without one.

Now, if Apple hadn't included Qi charging at all, that would've been a story worth writing!

  • Apple Maps renames Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America after official database update

From what I understand, it's only for American devices the rest of the world will still see the Gulf of Mexico.

As this is an executive action it will disappear with the next president.

Are we great yet because I'm just embarrassed
Still showing as Gulf of Mexico here in Canada. I actually appreciate Google's approach of using both names. Embarrassed you should be, as should everyone with a conscience. We are witnessing a world-changing/destroying leadership in action.

  • Apple is working on a 'lifelike' robot lamp, and it's just as cute as you'd expect

I think I'm experiencing a failure of imagination because I can't figure out why I would want or need a robot that roams around on my physical desktop or tabletop.

But I'm happy to be enlightened if anyone has ideas...
Part of Apple's brilliance with technology is to make technology "invisible". Making technology more "life-like" is one big step in that direction. It's not about this being a robot. It's about its abilities and expressive two-way communication. Body "language" is just as important for communication as spoken language. This intelligent technology could be packaged in so many creative ways.
