  • Craig Federighi says Siri won't become sentient, but it'll get better

Google and Meta sell you to the highest bidder for profit, Apple like most retailers gets all the information from you (about you) when you buy something from them to complete a mutual transaction, Google and Meta have to dig into the cesspool/trashcan (internet) to get the same information thru Spy-net.

Many people can’t grasp the how you make your money determines everything that you do afterwards in terms of how you conduct your business going forward, Google and Meta are night and day different from Apple and no amount of me too or feel good products or giveaways will change that.
Didn't Apple sold their customers to Google when they agree to make Google Search the default search engine in every Apple device?  It looks like Apple get some billions from Google business practices, right?
No, they didn’t. All it gives Google is the default position as the search engine. You can easily change it to another.

Federighi and Apple are the only ones being honest that none of this is anywhere near becoming ‘sentient’ AGI.
That's not really relevant right now from a consumer perspective.

Consumers will use what they have at their disposal just like always.

And as long as companies continue to hide from consumers the fact that their devices are monitoring  everything they do in order to be able to build up knowledge, people will blissfully accept the marketing fodder that they "need" this.

I often pose the question to people whether they'd be ok if the government put cameras and microphones all over their homes. The answer is universally no. Yet they're quite happy to let tech companies do it via their phones/smart speakers/etc because they really don't understand that it's EXACTLY the same thing. And that's because it was done underhandedly.

Apple is the only company with the integrity to explain, in detail, how their system works and how it protects privacy. And Apple wouldn't even have built it in the first place if all the tech investors and marketing hype hadn't convinced consumers that they "need" it. Yes, we all need tech companies monitoring everything we do just so that we can win bar room bets faster. Biggest eye roll ever.

I absolutely understand that there are some great things about PRACTICAL applications of AI to advance areas like health care. But I'm very cautious about its use in people's personal lives. For example, the way it's being used to manipulate people on social media (e.g. large numbers of bots convincing people of a certain opinion which benefits private interests). And even the kind of information it gives back on topics for which there are different viewpoints, all of which may have merit, but some of which may go against the personal views of the investors behind the technology providing that information.
Of course, if someone from Huawei said the same things, he would be holding them up as paragons of virtue, but since it’s Apple…

  • Apple removes independent media app from Russian App Store

Thanks for the clarification. So it’s really just a matter of Apple shutting down the App Store in Russia. That sounds like something that Apple should consider. I can’t imagine the lost revenue would be missed.
Shutting down the App Store in Russia would only penalize the people who already have Apple devices there. Have you forgotten that the App Store is also how you get updates to your existing apps?
Of course, but it isn’t that simple. If there’s an embargo, then shouldn’t it be for everything? I suppose it’s a philosophical thing. But then, Apple would have to leave quite a few countries to be even handed. Would Android phones stop selling there, or their software. What about Linux and Windows?

For me, I’d just like to be able to ask a question and get an accurate answer. The one thing Apple will miss out on with their model is that more people will just want to ask Siri some seemingly random question and get an answer, no matter what the question is. My friends and I get together every Friday, go to ,inch and co e back to my house where we have cake coffee or tea. We talk about everything. Often we need information to settle an argument. I see that as being more useful than summarizing my emails or messages.

but Apple is farming that out to ChatGPT. It’s out of their control. I’d really rather Apple handled that as well.

I would prefer the statement: “Apple has responded to criticism of the removals by saying it has to operate within the laws of the countries it decides to serve” followed by “and Russia is not a country that Apple has decided to serve.”

Wishful thinking, but there are times when unfettered capitalism is not appropriate, imho, even when it involves a financial loss for shareholders. Actions are stronger than words.

Well, it’s an interesting situation. Like most companies, they withdrew from Russia. That means that other than for the products smuggled into Russia, Apple is not selling there anymore. So they’re likely not making any money, assuming they’re not able to bill for services. If that’s true, I wonder why they would care about orders from the government there.
