Probably because many people will see the screen lock in unfolded mode (due to absence or whatever) and come back and want the FaceID to kick in immediately.

Face ID already works with your face being off-center/at an angle to the sensors. So moving the sensors to the center of one of the folded halves isn't really going to change how it works.

IMO, the design changes are related to visors/glasses being the future of computing. The advantage to having postage stamp sized screens that create the visual experience of multiple screens or gigantic screens while allowing mobility is obviously superior to the standard that currently exists. Apple is starting the transition to that future. Not saying it's right around the corner, but more like within the next 10 years or so.

M3 Ultra is double the M3 Max. M4 Max can't be configured as an Ultra.
