Apple can be bypassed completely (loosening its grip on Apple Pay, NFC revenues) but the option to remain 'all in' on Apple Pay remains should users choose to do that.
On the Android side, Google Pay is still unable to handle the dynamic CVV on my 'rechargeable' card in spite of me having reported issues for a couple of years now.
The solution? I use BBVA Pay and now never even consider Google Pay.
Choice is good.

LOL at the "viable for the long term" part. It's amazing that people don't understand that the AVP approach is the future of mainstream computing. You get large screens and mobility at the same time + significantly reduced material needs for manufacturing over time. That's what Tim Cook means by "tomorrow's technology today". Just like mainframes were replaced by desktops/laptops, today's desktops/laptops will be replaced by the visor/glasses form factor in the future.

Apple's decision to abandon CSAM scanning was always dumb. Their iCloud user agreement has always included language that stated they can scan files for illegal content. And the user is in total control of whether or not they use iCloud for backup and which specific apps have files backed up.
