  • Verizon includes Apple TV 4K in residential 5G rollout plans

I find Verizon's selection of cities for 5G to be interesting.  I'm not familiar with Sacramento, but the rest are all fairly flat cities.

While most write-ups of 5G focus exclusively on its speed, I think I also read in one a comment that the signal does not go far and is easily interrupted.  So, if true, does that meant that more hilly/mountanous cities will have to wait for 5G because it takes more towers & expense to build there?
Sacramento is in a valley, so it's flat. That is true regarding 5G, but I did read carriers will be using a lower frequency spectrum to help with the range issue. It sounds like they are going to use a combination of millimeter wave (high frequency) and sub 6Hz spectrum.

First question we ask when looking at a new vehicle is, “Does it support CarPlay?” I think the car companies are finally getting the message. Now we should be hammering away at wireless CarPlay. My 2016 F-150 didn’t support it at first but Ford released an update to its Sync 3 system and voila, CarPlay. Also had to swap out the in dash USB module for some reason. Android Auto didn’t need that. Don’t know why.

I wonder what resources Apple could make available to car manufacturers to develop native and compatible apps. I'd be far more likely to upgrade from my iPhone7 if I got wireless carplay. I am told this is technically possible, but requires a software change in the manufacturers (in my case, Ford Sync) installation.
Yeah, our 2017 Chevy Traverse doesn’t support CarPlay but it does have 4G LTE built in. Go figure
CarPlay was a requirement for our purchase. I'm not sure why I would want a hotspot in a car, unless it is provided for free. I'm guessing your Chevy installing requires a paid subscription?
I actually subscribe so I have a hotspot in my Mustang. I use it as a supplement to my Verizon service. Upgrading my data plan will cost me more than the $20/mo AT&T charges. When I'm in the car, I'm using the hotspot for Apple Music, Spotify, Apple Maps, Waze, etc. It works out well for me since I'm always running out of data on Verizon.

It is hard. Chinese have been stealing tech secret for long time. It is just rest of the world don't know how much and how!!! Chinese have planted tech stealers in Universities research labs, defense and other high tech corporations, hacking through government sponsored, just every which way you can steal and cripple country like America's future economy.
You just don't have be worry about Russians but lot more so of Chinese, way more.
Agreed. He needs more than 10 years in prison though.

This is guy was probably a Chinese government spy from the beginning. Something very drastic has to be done about this. Stories like this one have been happening for WAY too long. They steal American technology and later they either show up selling it back to us in their  products (and they get rich from our own work), or using it against us in military weapons.

Maybe the US should block entry, or severely limit, to any adult person coming from China. Our national security and economic prosperity depends on it.
Unfortunately there is really no easy solution. Limiting Chinese from coming here, we would lose a ton of money. Chinese tourists spent $33 billion here in the U.S. in 2016.

  • Here are all the big changes to Apple Maps from 2017 through 2019

I don’t understand why Maps isn’t more significantly updated weekly through the App Store.
What kind of updates are you looking for? Things like new roads, public transit directions, POI's, etc don't require an app update.

  • Zero Sign On a first step towards Apple TVs replacing crappy cable boxes

Not sure if I would want something to replace my DirecTV receiver. I don't like the idea of cloud based DVR.
Telecoms offer up nothing but shit interfaces, unnecessary hoops, and sub-standard services. I think if you’re not going to cut the cord yet, people should think about taking advantage of loopholes in US law. I wonder about the legality of paying for cable or satellite service, NOT USING the service at all (simply because it’s a pain to use), and then simply torrenting (WITHOUT SEEDING, WHICH IS THE ILLEGAL PART) MP4s of the shows you want to watch from (only) the channels provided to you by the service for which you pay. No ads, no DVRs, watch what you’re paying for however you want. Does this fall under the spirit of the “time shift” clause in the Copyright Act of 1976?
I'm definitely nowhere near cutting the cord. With all the standalone options out there, it all adds up to basically the cost of your cable/satellite bill. I would say that would be considered illegal. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought time shifting in copyright law covers recording of broadcast material for personal use. I'm not sure how that would apply to downloading the program. Something like that probably has never been challenged in court before.
