  • Apple responds to viral tweet over disappearing iTunes movies

Typical knee jerk reaction. It's ALWAYS Apple's fault!. Instead of "buying" digital content it might be better to be advertised as an unlimited "rental" agreement. Perhaps AI should do an investigative deep dive on the issue of digital content ownership. The DCMA is one huge bag of hurt when it comes to who has the rights to what. I have "purchased" a number of movies from iTunes, Vudu, and Prime but I have no idea what I actually bought. Streaming rights only? Do I "own" anything other than a license? Can the copyright owner remove a movie from the service I purchased it from? If I have a physical media copy of a movie I don't think I can be prevented from playing it a compatible device. Or can I?

What if Walmart decides to shut Vudu down? Do I lose the movies I purchased? do I have a right to a physical media version in it's place? I'm sure the lawyers have this all spelled out in the fine print somewhere.
If Vudu did shut down, you actually would lose all your movies. You technically don't own digital movies. Like you said, you are basically paying for an unlimited rental license. It's the same thing with iTunes. If Apple went out of business, you would lose your movies as well. It's all in the fine print on the iTunes Store. I assume most people don't realize they don't actually own the digital movies they purchase from iTunes, Vudu, Amazon, etc. That's one of the drawbacks from digital purchases. I still always buy physical media over digital. The majority of my iTunes and Vudu movie collection are from redeeming digital copies from movies I buy.

  • Apple pledges $1M to Red Cross as Hurricane Florence makes landfall

There needs to be some sort of technology where you can set off an explosion in the middle of a hurricane (when it is out to sea), to disrupt the air flow and dissipate it before it makes landfall.
I suppose a nuclear bomb would do it, but then you've got radiation spreading throughout the world.
    A nuclear bomb wouldn't work.

  • Verizon's '5G' home broadband to launch on Oct. 1, free Apple TV 4K included

This news is promising for rural customers. Then again, it will probably take years before people who live out in the country have access to 5G.
The U.S. still has rural areas that can't get anything better than dial-up for internet!
I just moved into a rural area 4 months ago. My only options were Hughes Net or this local broadband company that has towers all over the countryside. I went with the latter because you can't do online gaming on Hughes Net. The price I pay is outrageous for 13mb download speed. I tried to see if I could get DSL, but I'm a few miles too far out.
That doesn't sound fun. I like to escape for a week or two every year by going far way from internet connectivity, but I don't think I could live in it. Was the transition tough?
I thought it was going to be tough, but I love living out in the country. I'm only like 15 minutes from the city so it's not bad at all. Surprisingly, I can still stream stuff from Netflix and iTunes in 4K. That was one thing I was worried about. The downside to my internet is it takes forever to download large software updates or games from the Playstation Store. Two people can't be streaming at the same time, otherwise it's going to be constantly buffering the video. Where I'm at is nothing compared to where my relatives live in Montana. They have to drive hours to a grocery store and have no internet. I couldn't do that.

  • Getting started with playing your own music in iTunes on the Mac

I wish you'd go a little deeper into a couple of things. I'm not sure I understand the difference between "Artist" and "Album Artist". I've learned that if only the artist field is complete for one track and both the Artist and Album Artist fields are filled in on another, and the Album Artist differs from Artist, iTunes appears to alphabetize based on Album Artist, so it will list two separate artists. Put Bob Marley as Artist, e.g., and Bob Marley & the Wailers as Album Artist, and iTunes lists them as two separate artists. But in general I want one big folder for an artist, and then within that, I want sub-categories for variants. How do I do that?
Also any advice on how to deal with guest artists? In general, I still want a track to go under the main artist, but if I include the guest artist in either the Artist or Album Artist fields, iTunes wants to break that track out as a separate artist. And then, what if I also want the track to show up under the guest artist's name in their own folder? I haven't done it in years but in the operating system, Apple allowed you to create an alias that you could put somewhere else that would link to the original file, but I don't believe iTunes has ever allowed you to do that.
And I'm assuming you are throwing up your hands at any mention of jazz or classical, which have special needs. Yeah, I really would like to be able to listen to every cut I have featuring Bill Evans or Miles Davis. But they've played with lots of folks in addition to their own groups. Yeah, I could create a playlist for each artist, but that would take a lot of time. I wish iTunes would pull in all of the band members on each track for me and then let me sort them.
With classical, how do I keep all of the movements of one work together when it has multiple works? And how do I sort by both composer and artist, i.e., I wanna play all of my Mozart, but also anything directed by Toscanini or where Rubenstein played the piano? Oh yeah, I also wanna play the whole CD of the Boston Symphony that included that three part Mozart piece as well as something by Bach.
Any good database would let me do some of these sorts, but iTunes either can't or the way to do it is fairly well hidden.
To have iTunes categorize it properly, you should have Bob Marley in the Album Artist field and Bob Marley & the Wailers in artist field. Album Artist is who the album is actually by. So if you have a track with a guest artist, you put main artist in Album Artist field and artist plus guest artist in artist field. Another example is if you have a compilation album. If you put each individual artist in the Album Artist field, iTunes is going to think each song is a different album. So in that case you would put something like "Various artists" in Album Artist field and put the actual artist in artist field. Hopefully that makes sense.

  • Apple canvassing iMac Pro users on why they bought and what they like

They should canvas MBP users. Your favourite feature: the gimmicky Touch Bar, the lack of a physical esc key, the lack of MagSafe, the worse power plug with no cable management, the lack of port diversity, or the crappy feeling, fragile keyboard?

This should ruffle a few features here ;-)
I have the 2017 MacBook Pro.  I can answer that no problem

Touch Bar: Works fine for me - and I'm a software developer.
Lack of physical Esc key - No issue.
Lack of Magsafe - No love lost.  I'll take the combined TB3-USBc-Power in a single port anyway.
    Power Plug Management: WTF?
Port Diversity:  My TB3 port connects to a dock with all legacy ports I need.  Most of my external gadgets come with USBc connectors now.  Those that don't have a $7 dongle that rarely ever gets used.  Get over it.
Keyboard:  Sure, mine clicks loud compared to my old MBP.  I got used to it.  A year later, still works with zero problems.

I suspect there are more happy people like me, then the vocal minority that you're in.
I just bought a 2018 MBP a few weeks ago. I actually like the Touch Bar a lot. I prefer using my finger on the screen brightness slider for example over physical buttons. I like using the Touch Bar to save items, delete, etc. I just started using the Touch Bar with photo editing software. It works great. Overall, I think the Touch Bar is a great feature on the MBP.
