  • German government wants Tim Cook to reconsider CSAM plans

Client-side CSAM detection is incontrovertibly better for privacy than server-side CSAM detection.
    THAT!

I am happy of the change, it means Apple doesn't need to see the contents of my pictures to thwart child abuse.

The Messages update may be more nefarious, don't want to notify authorities about what images I receive.

  • iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro pre-order results beat iPhone 11 launch, Kuo says

The iPhone 12 mini does have dual SIM, like its siblings. One of the SIMs is an eSIM.

I expect the remaining models will command a larger share than what Kuo estimates, especially the Mini. Maybe 20-25% of sales

  • Apple silicon Mac documentation suggests third-party GPU support in danger

The A12Z Bionic is up to 8 GPU cores. The Most powerful and expensive GPUs have cores in the thousands. What would it take for Apple to create its own separate 500 core GPU SoC or maybe only a 100 core GPU with the ability to use several of them in a blade setup. There's nothing stopping Apple, other than patents, from making whatever they want to any way they want to. Look at the Mac Pro. It's a fantastic workstation.
The Mac Pro is not a fantastic workstation, it's actually extremely overpriced and underpowered. It might only be good in certain applications optimized under macOS, outside of that, nope.

    Repost from another thread:

    After Effects

While Macs often perform fairly well, in After Effects there is simply no argument that a PC workstation is both faster and significantly less expensive. Compared to the $20k Mac Pro we tested, a $4k PC using an Intel Core i9 9900K and NVIDIA GeForce 2080 Ti ended up being about 5% faster overall, while a $5.5k PC using an AMD Threadripper 3960X is about 18% faster. Even compared to the much better priced iMac Pro, a PC that costs $1K less is going to be about 35% faster.

    Are these numbers trustworthy?

It seems strange that the Mac Pro performs poorly in comparison to others with similar configuration.

This user is not seeing any slowness on his Mac Pro:

  • Apple Silicon Macs ditch startup key combos, alter Target Disk Mode

"On new hardware, users simply hold down the power button and they will be presented with a graphical set of startup options including OS restore or reinstallation."

This seems like a much better way to handle startup options. Start up key combos were rather clunky and since they're used so rarely I always had to go searching for them. Having a simple, intuitive way to get to a startup utility screen is a great improvement.
The shortcuts worked without a mouse or display attached. Did they completely remove them?

sounds like a bad move to me.

  • 'iPhone SE 2' not dead, but won't be the same size as the original says Ming-Chi Kuo

Going from an SE to an 8 is a half inch taller and a third of an inch wider?  Did I figure that right?  A person should be able to adjust to that in a matter of hours.  My wife went from a 7 to an X and the difference is about the same as the difference between a 7 naked and a 7 with a standard case.  I'm thinking people are looking at screen size differences and imagining huge differences in size.
Even one cm added width makes a lot of difference when holding. And the added height contributes to make the touch screen bigger than you can reach with one finger.

This has nothing to do with looks and everything to do with usability.
